There were only twenty-two deaths in Detroit

&bout two-thirds of the number.
Cholera is rapidly disappearing from Bt. Louis ,
Art abstract of the deaths for last week, publish

to hate been 282—only 49 of which were from
cholera.

William C. Tobey, (better known for his spir
ited and racy writings as "John of York,") died
at the Washington House, Harrisburg, at ten
o'clock on Tuesday night, of consumption. His
age was 86. He went to Mexico as a volunteer
in the let Pennsylvania Regiment, and edited
the North American, the first paper printed in
Mexico after the capitol was taken by Gen. Scott.
He afterwards received a commission as Ldenten
ant under the ten Regiment-bill, but 111 health

For the month of July there were 644 deaths
in Cincinnati, more than one-fourth of which
were from cholera. Ninety-seven deaths 'from
Asiatic cholera are reported,
,and one hundred

taker was employed, a majority of which may
be reasonably attributed to the twee muse. From
the silenoe of the press on the subject one would
_ suppose Cincinnati was entirely free from the
disease.
In the light of history thus presented, do
not the people see that Whig denunciation of
Democratic foreign policy is mere factions oppo
sition;—a mere attempt to make political capital
out of every event, by the most scandalous
disregard of truth, and for the interests and
honor of the country We do not some. all
Whigs of this. We believe the great mass of the
people are honest and patriotic. Bat of Whig
and opposition leaders and editors, headed by
Horace Greeley and James Gordon Bennett, we
decline believing any such thing. No one can
believe it.
THTC GRETTOWN 0/1:11R.--01721 FOR
Etorevenacy.
A few days ego we published a statement of
the facts connected with the bombardment of
Greytown. We still wait for full information;
but believe our statement of the fads that led to
the employment of such severe measures of pun
ishment was substantially cogent. If so, the
lawless vagabonds and bucanneers of that town
got perhaps about what they deserved.
By the most gross exaggeration and perversion
Of facts, the enemies of the administration hope
to make some political capital out of this affair.
It is natural that Whig leaders should condemn
the act. The party that burned blue lights to
guide the enemies of the country into our har
bors in the war of 1812; that lit bonfires and
rejoiced when Hull surrendered, and our armies
were defeated ; and that welcomed our citizen
soldiery with bloody Allude to hospitable
graves," in the war with. Mexico, will of course
take part with the pirates and Indians of Grey
town now. It is a historical, and a significant
foot, that the enemies of the Democracy in this
country are obliged, by their very position and
feelings, to take part with, and give aid and com
fort to, the foreign enemies of the country, in
any difficulty arising with foreign nations during
a Demooratlo administration. Is it not so
Daring the war of 1812, the sympathies of the
leading Federalists were with England, because
a Democratic PreaUNA and Congress ,declared
the war. When Jackson threatened reprisals by
armed vessels if the long•withheld French in
demnity money was not paid up, their sympa
thies were with France; and they declared that,
Old Hickory" designed to involie as in a peril:
one war with i friendly nation. Daring the
war with Mashie, it is well known that their
sympathies were 'with the Mexicans, because a
Democratic President and CongreSs declared the
war. The Mexican papers published their
speeches. The Mexican government protracted
the war, in the hops that Whig influence would
at length prevail.
The contradictory arguments employed, too,
are worthy of note. The war with England was
denounced because England was too strong for
us. The French difficulty wee condemned for
the same reason. The war with klextoo was de
nounced for precisely the opposite reason.
Mexico was too weak for us. The threatened
rupture with Spain i abueed for the same rea
son; and the occurrence at Greytown is furiously
assailed, because the town was defenceless;
though boasting an English protectorate, and
having a British armed vessel constantly In their
harbor to collect their black mail by tiring on
our 'steamers. Either way it is equally wrong
in their estimation, and equally condemned.

Injuries, than thou of any other nation; and our
ships have beenmore frequently fired upon, and
our flag more grossly insulted, than those of any 1
other strong nation. From the close of the re-1
volution to 1812, any British armed ship might
fire spout an' American merchant - vessel, and
board her and take from her as many sailors as
~they chose, though American citizens, and com
pel them to serve in the British navy. These
outrages and Insults were endured for twenty
years; though. each ease was a nun for war
by the laws of nations. Darius ..Bonaparte's
, ware our ships were seised wherever foundpand
confiscated, both bY the English and-French, and
it wasnot until Jackson was Presideat that the
French government paid the damages for those
seizures. Ever since Mexico because an inde
pendent nation 'the authorities of her seaports
have committed depredations upon our rem- i
mere' such as no other nation would have en
dured. : In numerous Instances, of which the
proofs are on record efe Washington, they seized
bur ships, imprisoned the seamen, and plunder
ed the cargoes. After month* of Imprisonment
the gallon would be discharged, without any
charge being specified against them. For -
al years put the Spanish authorities of Cohn
have repeatedly insulted our flag, plundered our
ships, and imprinted our citizen. Several
times duriag Pinatas's administration Spanish
war vessels and on oar merchant ships, and no
redress or apology was ever obtained. Near the
close of his administration a British aimed ves
sel tired on an American steamer In this harbor
of Smyth's, and compelled the officers of the
steamer to pay "black mail" to the knaneent.
It is but a few mouths since an American sea
captain arrived at Washington, sad made known
the feet that be had jut escaped from • Dutch
prison at Batavia, in the south-eutets extremity
of Asia, where he had been incarcerated for
eighteen months, and plundered of all his pro
perty. But il would be an endless task to enum
erate instances. Probably hardly one month
has elapsed for twenty years, in which Ameri
can citizens could not have been found is foreign
prisons ; end in a majority of instances no charge
or offence has been substantiated against them.
Is this to endure forever ? Is such the protec
tion our adventurous navigator end hardy maxi
sere bare aright to demand from the govern
ment?' Is this nation alone to be subjected to
such insults'? England and Francs would have
bombarded half the seaports of the world, had
their flap and clams been subjected to half
the insults and injuries to which ours are au
neatly exposed. The lenity with which our
government has treated such constant and gross
'outrages on our citizens, is presumed upon by
every people, strong or weak ; and Americans
are nowhere safe. We bout that nor commerce
extends over all the world, and that we hare
more tonnage then any other nation. Aye, and
we have more citizens In foreign prisons, and
our flag has been more frequently fired upon than
any other nation. But this is to be our shame,
we trust, no longer.
Gen. Pismo, in his inaugural address, very
clearly Indicated that a bolder and more deter
mined foreign policy would be pdrsued. The
first practical iutsrpretatioe of that address was
on the coast of Asia, where our sailors cleared
decks for ,battle with Austria In defence of a
1 man " clothed with our nationality," and entitled
Ito our protection. Austria demanded an apology
for the fended wrong, and was told that the gal
lant Ingraham had done his duty, and no apology
would be even.
The Sualah °Moist' at Havana seized - the
American steamer "Blank Warrior," took out
cargo, and . fined her owners 118,000. Quick as'
eteam and the nil could take • messenger to
Madrid, ample reparation and en apology were
demanded. The ship mica:go were teetered to
the owners, and the fine remitted. The apology
will have to come yet.
Some four hundred Jamaica negroes and. na
tive Indians, and forty or fifty English, Preneh, ,
German and American rovers build a mud vil
lage at the mouth of the Sin Juan, to live by
plundering the thousands of California emigrants
and the travel and trade by the Nicaragua
route. The American company to avoid this
plunder, obtains a grant of land from Nicaragua, '
crosses the river to Point Arenas and bullds
warehouses for their business. The bocaseers
of Greytown Groff the river end destroy
these warehouses, and seize the goods and oar
ry them of. An American minister to Central
America arrives In their town. They mob Min,
hurl missiles at his bead and imprison him.
Our government sends down a war vessel, Cy
stic to demand compeustion for the American
Company's property that they destroyed, and
an apology for the insult to the American flag
and minister. Both are positively refund, and
more depredations threatened. The town was
destroyedtrithont lase( life. The remedy was
severe, and probably no milder enures would
have been of any avail. But, when justified by
the eiroumetence, *few such examples will make
our flag respected, and do more to protect our GI t
teens abroad than all the diplomacy in the world.
It will do no harm to the character end future
conduct of the people of the Spanish, Mexican
and Central American States thit the voice of
our cannon has once been heard in their midst,
vindicating American honer and American
rights. A few such severe examples may be ne
cessary. They will be resorted to with reluc
tance. Bat American citizens most be protected.
In the palmy days of Old Rome the title of "Ro
man Citizen," was a passport of protection eve
rywhere. The title of "American Citizen,"
should yet become such ; and doubtless will if
democrats rale.
But el the whig milliliters of the adminis
tration, "Greytown was defencelese, its weak
ness should have been Its protection." Well, if
the strong should not chastise the Weak, the
weak should not insult and plunder the strong
All &greasers must be puniebed,'and democrats
shrink not from the responsibility of punishing
both the'stroeg and the weak whin they insult
our flag, and maltreat or plunder our citizens.
Madison and a Democratic Congress, in 1812,
deolared war against the strongest nation of the
world forthis cense. That war was brought to
a macounfol issue, end the , right to search our
you'll and impress our seamen hen been practi
cally abandoned ever since.
If, the facts and circumstances of the Oreytown
cote are snob as we have learned them, they
would justify the punishment inflicted; and it
will teach a much needed lesson in that part of
the world.
When full details are obtained we can better
judge whether Captain Hotline pursued the
proper course under his-instructions.

Fortunately, &beret .thie time he met Capt. Van I

and put him on the trail. He followed it up for
six days and traveled over 800 miles, when he
overtook the Indians. To avoid pursuit they crow
ed the Nneoes three times, and also a large lake.
Capt. Van Buren swam his horses 400 yards across
this lake and struck the trail on the opposite side.
The two parties discovered each other as the
Indianawere turning a hill, and when the Cap

up in line of battle ready to receive him—they
having taken their saddles and everything off
the horses except the bridles, and put them in a
pile. The Indians opened the fight with arrows,
and when they supposed they had drawn toe
fire of the Captain's party, charged it. The ,
Captain immediately ordered his men to dis
mount and take their rifles, before this they had
um only their revolver!, without much effect.
When some five or six Indians had been knocked
off their horses, they - broke, and the Captain
charged them.
The Indiana left one of their number dead on
the ground, bat succeeded in carrying the other
dead and wounded off. They left their saddles,
do. Captain Van Buren and three of his men
were wounded. In the commencement of the
fight the Captain received a wound in the sword
arm, which bled profusely; and in the charge
he attacked a powerful young Indian, who was

him, the Indian suddenly sprung from under his
horse's neck, with his bow already drawn, and
shot him through the body. It entered on the

Loring passed down the ball, sad the two met

It is said that up to this time there are
but two suits issued against the Baltimore and
Busquefilinna Railroad Company for damages
incurred by the aeoldent on the 4th of last
month. The snit instituted by Mrs. Johnson,
for the loss of her husband, has been volunta
rily withdrawn by that lady. A large number
of sufferers have compromised on liberal terms,
end the same disposition seems to prevail gen
erally amongst those who have not yet finally
adjudicated their claims.

Catholic Riot In Now York
A riot of a singular nature took place about
seven o'clock last night in Thirteenth.- street, .
near Avenue A. The wife of Thomas *ally:ger
was taken sick, and, expecting to die, she sent
for:lather Maloney, a Catholic priest, to attend
her in her last hours. To this Gallager was op-,
posed, end forbade the priest entering the house.
The prieat, however, Insisted on going In, when
Gtiliger struck him with his Bst, knocking him I
down and rendering him quite senseless. ' On
the fact becoming known to the people who live
in the vicinity, a large crowd assembled, very
much enraged at the insult offered to the oler
gyman. They fell upon Galleger with the avowed I
I intent of taking his life.
Captain Hiatt, hearing of the difficulty, as
sisted by officers M'Melleu, Kenney, Mortimer,
Sherwood and Lockwood, was early on the
ground with a strong force, and succeeded in
rescuing Gallagher from his perilous position.
Patrick Barns, Peter Collins, John Keld. John
O'Neil, Margaret Buckley, and Peter M'Gwio
were arrested for participating in the riot. The
persons-arrested were Peter Collins, Jno. Reeler,
John O'Neil, Peter M'Owia, Richard Long, and
Margaret Buckley, of whom the first three were
committed this morning at the Essex Market, in
default of $BOO bail, and the others were dis
charged on payment of three dollars fine. Gal
lager was also committed for examination, and
Patrick Barns discharged. Baty is not consid
ered in a dangerous condition. A rumor which
may not be true, has been circulated to the
effect that the priest has been deposed from his
order, and has no right to alt as a clergymen.
Gallager is a Catholic.
Statistics for the Carious
The editor of the True Democrat (N. Y.) who
is a great statist:den, hue given recently some
ourious "facts in human life." They may be
looked upon as reliable, and are, withal, of fully
as much Importance as the great majority of
almanac literature. He says;
There are in Now York 893.842 inhabitants ;
and of these 137,258 keep eating houses in the
vicinity of our office ; 2.201 are candidate! for
the office of Register; 204,948 are engaged in
lending money at three per cent. a month—and
all the rest are continually busy borrowing. The
losses (on notes) are about balanced by the
gains. The married are longer wired than the
single, and they are, above all, those who ob
serve a sober and industrious conduct. Tall men
are longer than short ooes. Women have more
chances of marriage in their favor previous to
being filly years of age than they have
after
wards. Marriages are more frequent during the
rtqw moon than at other times. People bora
between the months of January are likely to live
until they die. Bursts and rows are more
frequent by night than by day. The number of
women capable of bearing their arms (and
shoulders) is calculated at sit-fourths of the en
tire female population.
