The-readers of Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-
Told Tales will remember a very carious specu
lative essay on the'sabject of a gentleman who
took the strange whim of absenting himself from
bis wife and family, and remaining coaeealsd
for many .years in the neighborhood of bis own
tohe, for the purpose of observing their oon
duet lifter bis supposed death:' Ttis’sh J dld
newspaper • story,' and was found, I believe by - -
Mr. Hawthorne, in. .an. American journal. A\
year or two ago it was also related in a London,
weekly paper: the scene being then laid in the
suburb's of the' metropolis; and T remember a
few years baek to hare met -with it In a Pre&dh
paper, wherein the oircumataooee were stated to
be of recent ooourrenoe—the mysterious has*
band being no other than our old fnend the
Sieur X-iyro hac viee, a draper in the Hue 8b
Honore. The various versions are evidently
taken from another; but the' original, story, from
which they differ soarcelyfn' wy thing'b*ut* in
names and places, Is found in Dfcwilliam King's
“ Political and literary anecdotes of his own
Times,”. Hr. King w&e a well known soholar
and a busy literary man, in the early part of
tbeoentory. Hie anecdotes were discovered by
accident, fn manuscript, aboot forty years ago
only; but they were well ascertained to be
genuine. Tho story referred to appears to bn
antheotie. and to those who have-not yet met
with it may be foQnd an interesting addition to
tho stories of “Disappearances’* in earlier ham
here of Household Words. Abbot the year
seventeen hundred and six 1 knew one Mr.
Hove, a sensible well-natured man, possessed of
an estate ot seven or eight hundred per annum.
He married a young lady of good family in the
west of England; her maiden name was Mallet;
she was agreeable in her person and manners
and proved a very good wife. Seven or eight
yearn after they bad been married, he rose one
morning very early, and told his wife that be
was obliged to go to the Tower to transact some rv
particular business. The same day, at noon his *
wife received a note from him in which he in
formed her that he was onder the necessity of
going to Holland and should probably be absent
three weeks or a month. He was absent from
her seventeen years, daring which lime she
neither heard from him, or of him. The evening
before he returned whilst she was at rapper,
and with some of her friends and relations—
particularly one Dr. Hose, a physician—who
bad married her sister, a billet, without any
subscribed name, was delivered to her, in which
the writer requested the favor of her to give him
a meeting in Bird-cage Walk, in 6c James’s
park. When she had read the billet, she tossed
it to Dr, Bose and said, laughing, “yon see,
-brother, old as I am, I hare got a gallant"
Bose, who perused the note wttb more attention,
declared it to bo Mr. Hove’s hand-writing. Thin
surprised all the company, and so much affected
Mrs. Howe that she fainted away. However,
she soon recovered, when it was agreed that Dr.
Rose and his wife, with the old gentleman and
ladies who were there at supper, should attend
Mrs. Howe the next evening to the .Bird-cage
Walk. They had not been there more than five
or six minutes, when Mr. Howe came to them ;
and, after embracing his wife, walked bom’ with
her, and they lived in groat harmony from that
time to tte day of his death.
But the most carious part of my tale remains
to be related. London re the only place In all

near Bt. James’ church. He went no farther
than to a little street in Westminister, 'where he
took a room, for which he paid five or six shill
ings a week; until changing his name,iand dis
guising himself by wearing a black wig, (for he
was a fair man,) he remained in his habitation,
ouring the whole time of his Absence. He had
two children by his wife when he separated from
her. who were both, living at tho time, bat they
both died young, in a few years after. Ilowet

Upon quitting his house and family in the
manner I bare mentioned, Mrs. Howe at first’
imagined, as she could -not oonceive any other
cause foraoehan abrupt elopement, that be bad 7
contracted a large debt unknown to bar, and.bj
that treacß involved himselfin difficulties whlob
he oonld hot easily surmount; and for some
days ehe lived in continual apprehensions.of da*
mauds from creditors, of seisnras and execu
tions. But nothing of. this kind happened ;* on
the contrary, be did not only-leave bis estate
quite free and enencombered, bat he paid the
bills of every tradesman with whom he had nay
dealings; and upon examining his papers in doe
time after be was gone, proper receipts and dis
charges were found from all persons, whathdt

manner of transactions, or money concerns. -
Mrs. Howe, after the death of her children,
thought proper to lessen her family of servant!
and the expenses’ of her housekeeping, and
therefore removed from her bouse in Jermyn
street, near Golden Square. Just over
her lived one Salt, a corn-chandler. About tan -
years after bis disappearance, Mr. Howeoontri
ved to make .acquaintance with Salt; and at
length acquired such a degree of iotimaey with
him that he usually dined, with Salt ohoa -
or twioe a week. From the room in which they
ate, it was not difficult to look into Mrs Howe’s
dining room, where she generally sat and re
ceived her company ; and Salt (who believed
Howe to* be a bachelor) frequently reoommended
his own vife to him as a suitablematch. Daring
the last seven yeira of Howe’s absence, he went
•very Sunday to St. James* church, and used to
ait in Mr. Salt’s seat, where he had a view of his
wife, but could not easily be seen by her.
After ho returned home, be never would con
fess, even to his intimate friends, what was the
real cause of such singular conduct. Apparent- “
ly there was none; but whatever it was be was
certainly ashamed to own it. Dr. Ross has
