Acontreatwasdrawnbet.conthe j condition of the Society ten years ago and at tha pTesont i time, and showed that it had attended Be Bold of oporetlona into .'great number of places not before included. ■ - A number of Culportcurs and other agents h\d been em-. ployed by the Young Men’s Bible Society, the AHeghcny County Bible Society, and the Female Bible Society, and dis tributed a latgo number of the Sacred Scriptures. A con silcruhle sunformonoy had also been realiael by these So cieties, and b-ndi»l in to thoTrcasurer of tho State Society. ■ The Speaker complained of a lack of spirit existing among those hiving charge of the work; and thought that new life m'ght ho introduced, and the Society made more useful tho organisation of subordinate Societies in tho towns ’.ad district. - The speaker olso said that a new exploration cflulf the counties In Western Pennsylvania should be mode, ms that number, at least, were not supplied sufficient iy with Bibles. Cambria county had lately been supplied; and.. portion of Armstrong county gono over. In the lit ter county, there were found five hundred families complete' ly destitute of Bibles. The work of supplying Brie county will shortly bo commenced. This county has already con tributed six hundred dollars to the fends of the State So ciety, end trill give that amount yearly, betides farnlshlng the whole eouuty with Bibles. In Crawford county a great aearelty of Bibles wss felt, and a new supply badly needed. Westmoreland county, In Alteon months, contributed 41,500 to the State Society, and wanted a new supply of Bibles— i tho last supply was furnished three years ago. In Clarion county, whlsh hod been explored by tho agents, ono hun dred and fifty iamilles were found destitute of the word of Hod. Mercer county also needed a supply; bat no. means hid Jet been taken to furnish it. Butler county, Isst year, coutrihntnl three or four hundred dollars—tho first dona tion madehy that county. Thospeakor also remarked that the whole Northern range of counties should be'attended toby th»fedtty,'.asnoanistanre was given athomo. The work in Beaver county hed been attended to very negligent ly. ! The gentleman thou entered Into a somewhat lengthy description of the colporteur system, and explained tbs mo dus operandr of their proceeding. The Sgcnt of tho Koslem District, Bev. Mr. Torrence, also gave on account of themannsr in which the good wort -was progressing W his part of the State. • The gentleman thought if a tract was published and distributed broseast over His whole State, It might operete very beneficially In the dUTuelon of that work. Hsuphln county was remarked i to he the best organised county in the district; and an or ganization, on a similar principle, had been mads in York erfoniy; Borki eonnty was referred to as being the poorest and least effectively organized of any county In the State and exhibited .very sad and humiliating account An ex plorathm' of the county took place a short time ago, and the result was as follows: Number of families visited, 9010; Families destitute or the Bible, SOT; Bibles and Testaments putln dreulatlon, 1100; Of Protestont fieml. lies, the fewest were found destitute. 3527 females had been Visited in tho dty of Beading, and 281 of that number found wlthont the Bible—the majority .of them being Cath olic;: Carbon county had been explored, and 300 families supplied with Bibles. Among the Catholic families visited, .few Dousy Bibles were found; but tbs greatest number were destitute. In Bhlltdelphla city 25,676 Bibles and 20,000 Teatamenta had been distributed to seamen alone, borides 0,431 Bibles .ud Xiutameuts placed In the hands of emigrants- and otiiers, at the rallroed <»ra and vessels.
