TUESDAY MORNING:
Atreumn Escape or Jewhi;—Within • the past few
- tho offleere of the county prison have discovered a
fchemßon the part of Jewdl> nowin the jail, on* charge of
murder, to escape, which, if it had not been for the timely
discovery: made, would undoubtedly havo resulted Id the
complete success of tho plan, and the escape of the unfofto.
tiate prisoner. The details of the schema, show wonderful
ingenuity anil perseverance on Jewell’s part, and also es
tablishes tho fact that he hod accomplices outside of the
jdl wall. '
r :-on. Friday and Saturday last, the jailor,'Mr. Crawford dts*
covered soms unueal appearances about the prisoner. This
excited his suspicion, and tin Sunday, the Sheriff, jailor and
others searched tho cell occupied by Jewell. On examing
his Irons, they discovered that the rivet confining the clasps
of the manacles around his ancles, had beenfiled through
insuch a manner Ibat with but little effort ho could have
broken tho rivets and freed himself from the irons. When
this was discovered, the prisoner quietly remarked, that
•‘no one could.. find fault with him.” On oxamfaing the
large pipe which carries tho refuse from tho roll, a bog was
discovered, containing chisels, a file, and all tho necossary
tools for removing the heavy iron plate from tho jail win
dow, In tho ventilator, -a rope made of bod ticking was
discovered—ihe rope Is .very strong, nearly an inch thick,
and about thirty feet in length.. In the bed of the coll a
heavy wooden hammer handlo was discovered. Tho rope
found consisted of pleoes of ticking a yard In length, tied
together. It was twisted in a very skillful manner.
Jewell was Immediately convoyed to another cell, aqd
suoh measures as were necossary to his eafo keeping taken.
If tho plan hod not been discovered, three hours Vork
would havo sufficed to have placed Jewell atlibcrty.
