TULSIIAY. MORNING:::::::::::;;PKIiRUAHY 7.
From tljo Savannah Kejmhllcnn, Jnn. 21
Lieut. Fbai-cis K. Mubeay, U. S. Navy
The noblo conduct of this officer, who happen.
ed to be a passenger on hoardtho ill-fated steam
ship San Francisco, has elicited tho warmest
praise. The aid whioh he gavo to Capt. Watkins,
the brave commander of the ship, and to his suf
fering companions—tho words of hopo which
his manly courage enabled him to utter for the
relief of the distressed and inexperienced around
him, have been recorded in tho thrilling state
ment of Sergeant Southworth.
- The scone, dreadful as it was,’was not new to
this gallant officer. Ho was on board tho brig
Washington, attached to the Const Survey, com
manded by. tho accomplished Capt. George M.
Baoho. In,a terrible-storm on tho Atlantic n
wave washed - overboard Capt. Baoho and some
fifteen ofSoers and men, among them Lieut Mur.
roy. Of nil these,-we believe Mr. Murray was
the only person who regained tho brig. Ho waß
hauled m by a seaman through one of her ports,
and did good service in saving tho vessel. He
wbb in the. shipwreck of the U. 8. sloop of war
Boston, Capt. Pearson. Three years ago ho
was. placed in command of the iron steamer Jef
ferson, attached to the Coast Survey, and inten
ded for the survey of tho Pacifio coast. He en
countered a succession of gales near Cape Horn
In one of whioh his vessel was very nearly bro
: ken in two. He succeeded, however, by Mb cour
age and good seamanship, in bringingher though -
a wreck, into port in Patagonia. In his letter
to Prof. Bache, superintendent, he says: -
“In conclusion, sir, I need hardly: Bay, that I
abandon this vessel with feelings of deep regret,
but with a consciousness that my duty requires
it For seventy-two hours all hands wero con
stantly on dcok at the pumps, and bailing with
out rest, drenched by the soa and benumbed by
the cold. It appeared that nothing bat a mi.
raonlous interposition of Providence could save
us, and we have great cause for gratitude that
this was accorded to ns:’*
That kind Providence so gratefully acknowl
edged, has for a fourth timo saved him from the
perils of .-the .sea—saved him.to minister 1 to'oth

Mobe Smcgounq— Seizure of Goods on the
Steamer Asia—Arrcate.— There wag another de
velopment relative .to the violation of the re
venuolaws upon the arrival of the ABia at her
dock in Jersey City yesterday.; Officers Isaacs.
Godfrey, Geo. Wooldridge and William Miner
were watching for her appearance, having pre
viously been assured that there would be contra
band goods on board of her. Immediately oh
her arrival,-vigilant search was made, and the
surgeon of tho Asia,. Dr.Dowling, was arrested
on suspicion of having been a principal in the
violation of the revenue laws, on previous trips
of the Asia, and J. Johannison on suspicion of
aiding and abetting snoh violations. Mr. Joliah
nison is Baid to be connected with a house in
where goods have been seized late
ly. Ho went on board of the Asia in the boat
of the _ Physician of the Port, at Staton Island.
His object, as he alleged, was to see a Mr: Ben
jamin. When tho steamer reached the dock, a
quantity of lace, estimated to bo worth about
'•'7oo, was found in the trank of MrT Benjamin,
and seized. - It is-believed that a largo quantity
of. very valuable goods, mostly diamonds, is yet
secreted on tho: steamer. Tho prisoners l>r.
Dowling and Mr. Johannison—wore taken across ‘
the.ferry, aud.passed into the custody of Assis
tant Marshal Horton, who took them to the office
of tho United States-District Attorney, and ah ;
affidavit was there made by Mr. Frederick Isaacs,
inspector of customs, one of those engaged in
the arrests, Mr. Johannison sent word to Mr. ’
Denson, doing business at 44 Maiden lane, land'
iiQ soon Came, with L;.B* Shepardaa attorney* l ■
After a brief examination by him into ’ the
charges against the accused, they were admitted
to hail in the snm of $5,000 each. Dr. Leavitt
of New York, went their bail. ’ .
It is stated that the total amount of fcontra
bacd goods seized within a few weeks past is not
less than $lOO,OOO. Of this amount, §60;000
was seized in Maiden lane, a quantity at a place
in Broadway, and another lot last week at a store
in Liberty street.— Nca York Herald.

i !hb Revolution ik China. Amoy the
most melancholy , accounts have been, received
and involving an. amount of-bloodsbed that 1b
calculated to strike terror into the hardest heart,
and with any other people than Chinese would
induce a reaction and a cry of vengeance on tlio
authors of such; fearful outrages as those now
enacting at Amoy and. in its neighborhood. The
Imperialists have retaken the place, and have 1
marked their success by slaying in cold blood
nearly one thousand persons, most of whom took
no part in the late movement, exoept on compul
sion. The streets and wharves of Amoy have
literally streamed with human blood ; dot shed'
in any warlike operations, but done in savage
revenge, and to blind the authorities of Pekin
as to the bravery of. the enactors.
A letter from Amoy, dated Nov.'22d, states
that up to that period all was qniet, and matters
wore' much the same appearance, as far as for
oigners were concerned, as under the insurgent
rulers, Executions were: of daily; occurrence.
The mandarins, to mark .their suocess, were re
vellmg In human gore, putting to death all who'
fall into their hands, indiscriminately; The ori
ginal mover of the rebellion: had been given up
..to the . mandarins; -tho unfortunate wretch was
executed on the 17th November, together with
his eon, both bodies being quartered and their
heads placed on the principal city gates. The
•villages i around Amoy were made to contribute
to; themonster executions. Whole villages were'
threatened with death, unless they gave up all
who took part in or sympathized with the rebels;
and, as a consequence of this brutal demand,
the poor, weak, inoffensive and dofonooiess vil
lagers wero surrendered up as ; victims, to satiate
tho mandarins’ thirst for blood.
