Tns Gesal?ait Lake Citt.—A correspond-,
ent at the Oregonian, who has just made tho
trip from. Oregon to Utah, gives tho, following
description of the Mormon settlements at Great
' Blit Lake City:
“Everywhere' ore the evidences of an indus
trions people', in the stacks of hay and grain,
and great pileat of yellow pnmpkios,_ and the
abundance of other vegetables. The absence of
wood os a bnilding material, gives the houses of
stieks and mad a rather hut-like appearance;
but these structures are being rcplaoed by good
abode edifices. . . . „ ,
“The city has the look, of-a great collection ot
small farms, eaoh lot being largo and cultivated
in crops—all having the air of rustic plenty.
The city is magnificently laid out, with noble
broad streets, well kept The stern, rugged
mountains in the distance soem to wall in the
valley, and separate the'Mormons with all their
dootrines, from the rest Of the world. They are
building an adobe, wall, fifteen feet high, around
tho ten acre lot in the centre of the town, in
- which are the foundations of the temple, and.
the completed tabernacle or., meeting house—a
plain, large,’ and neat room, holding 1,500 or
2,ooo'persons. The .oounoii houße and post
office are goSd stuccoed structures—all of these
doing great credit to the energy of tho people.
“Brother Brigham lives in a white cottago,
with a 'double ooaoh-house,’ bat is bnilding a
fine new house. Tbereiß no doubt of bis having
about thirty wives, and that sometimes several
of them go to church in an omnibus; but, as nil
theso things are part of a f religious system, a"
things are conducted in order. "I am stopping
in a plain but respectable family, the daughter
■ of which; a fine young woman, is one of the
twenty-five spiritual wives of Kimball, tho second
in command.” . :
