NEW PATENT AMALGAM PEN.—This important i v
vehtioii removes thotwo great-obstacles tot he ui-i
versa! useof the Steel Pen, vixi their rigidity; nhd tfi«-ir
rapid destruction by the corrosivo action of the ink. In
minutely examining the quill pen in the act of writing, it
will be seen that 2Ae action it compound, consisting, first, of
a gentle yielding backward aetion immediately the
• nib of the pen, the ■ ‘‘scissors?* action, t-r
spreading opeh of the points to permit tbe flowof the iok.
This compound movement—which steel pens hitherto'
never have had—gives to the quill its flexibility, and that'
peculiar springy play which is so agreeable to thehahd,
and which seems to suit the action of ibo muscles of tue
fingers-; yielding, as it does, to theslightestprdssore, with
out cramping the hand. 'The efforts of all steel pen makers
have been directed to the attainment of this essential qui»K
ity, of flexibility, and thej have hod recourse to an inDu
. memble.varicty of. crocks and piercings to attain it. The
inventors of. the Patent Amalgam Pen found, from, a .seri*<a
of experiments, thatthe. whale practice efthe trade had In
this respect been erroneous—that no combination. uf
/“cracks” and M piercings ,r couldproducethe desired action,
if theorditiary form the tlalpen wereadhered to. TJns
■point being gained, they avoidedthe phmhlthexto adopted
far attaining flexibility, and gave a.peculiar tona to the
metal, by hich they managed.-to. combine the u sclssotk”;
action of the ordinary steel pen with the agreeable flexibil
ity of the quill: 'The seconddlf&colty to be overcome wna
of less magnitude, but still of great importance to the con
sumers of steel pens.'. 'Every one i&Aware of the corrosive
action of the ink on the ordinary steel pen. Evefx with the
• greatest core, it speedily destroys the delicately smooth sur
face of the. pen.-So serious a .drawback Is this fromttie
utilityof the .steel pen, that thousands are induced to-pur
chase gold pens, at on enormous ,cos£ almost exclusively
because of the, anti-corrosive quality of.that metal. The
inventors have removed’ this evil by their compound metiti, ;
which possesses all the necessary qualities of steel, with the
additional merit of resisting the chemical of thelpk.:
. Thesc Pent wilt last more than twenty times longer than the
Sied Pen, ihux rendering them the cheapest ever introduced.
