Mr M*Auley presented a resolution in regard to futnre
■ idUrdidsubscriptions to the city.; The resolutionprotested
- against tho passage of a* low, now before. the-Lcglslature,
empowering tho city to euhscribofcr additional stock in any
railroad new being constructed, and inwldch the city has
■ Stock.
Mr Marshall opposed the passage of the resolution, in an
eloquent speech, in which he spoke of tho advantages which
would result to tho city from the completion of the Ston
bcnvllle railroad, at which road the resolution was aimed.
Further remarks were m&do by Messrs. M’Auley, Marshall
and Moorhead. The resolution was lost by a . vote of 10
ayes to Id nays.
Several resolutions, in regard to tbo laying of water pipes
and grading of streets, were read and appropriately referred

consequence of soeh ill treatment, loft the honseof tho

TERRIBLE EXPLOSION.
Nxw Yqcx, January 29-—French’s ball and- cartridge foe
tory,nlßatonswood, Long Island, explodod yet-terdayafrer
uoon, and nearly twenty persona were iastantly killodi—
most of ihera xvore tx>ya and girls, who trero employed in
filling cartridges. Upwards of 00,000 cartridges exploded.
Tbo houses far miles around wore shaken, breaking all the
windows.; Tho magastoe. containing three tons of powder,
narrowly escaped. • Tho number employed geacrallyln the
building i« about tlilrty. All who were in the inside at tho
time of tbo explosiou were inshmlly killed, except two.
Some of tho estimates place th« number of killed as high
as thirty. Three girls belonging to one family are among
tbo killed. The bodies were ail M:wn into fragments, and
mingled with pieces of the building, timber, eta. .

exposed to the horrors of the storm that swept over the
Ohio last Sunday night One of the mOrt daring feats was

charge of Montgomery and Sturgis, pilots, and on tho next

second pilot, L. Sturgus, and ono of the crow, a green hand
from Indiana, but a willing and daring soul, jumped into
the river with a line, and succeeded in swimming to the
shore, and mode last to a tree, thus landing and saving the
after thb performance of this feat, a coal boat be
longing to Kirk Lewis, one of the pair piloted by Miller,
came down the river and struck against one of the boats of
Montgomery, that bad boon tbuß landed, and sunk it. The

One of the crew of Mr. Davis, requests us tosay that they
did not desert the boat. They did not leave it until they had
tied it with five lines to the shore.
