tfiom tliO Autobiography brfisr.J.B. Fuller J
THE TWO SPIES. i
- As early;aß the year 1790 the block-house and
stockade above the month of the Hooking river,!
-. was a frontier poet for the.hardy pioneers of the
North-western Territory.' There: nature was ip
her undisturbed livery of dorkandthick forests,!
intorspereed withgresa and -flowing prairies.!
Then the forest had not heard the Bound of the
woodman’s axe, nor the plow of the hasbahdthaij
opened the bosom of the earth. Thenthoßeboaul
tlfni prairies wared their golden bloom to thd
God of Nature; and among the most luxjwiahtbf
these were thoßa whioh. lay along the Hookhoek}
ing Valley, end especially that portion ofitop
which the town of Lancaster now stands. This
place, for its beauty, its riohnoßa of soil, and
pioturesqne . scenery, waß selected bbw location
for an Indian village. This afforded a suitable
placo for tbo gambol of the Indian sportgmenJ
.as well as a , central spot for concentrathifr the
Indian warriors. -
, Here the tribes of tbs North and West met tq
counsel, and from this spot led forth the wari
path in different directions. Dpon one of thesa
occasions,.when the war spirit moved mightily
among the . sons of Nature, and the tomahawk
leaped in its scabbard, and the spirits of theif
friends, who had diod in the field of battle, visf
ited the warrior in hia night visions and called
londly for revenge, it was ascertained at the
garrison above {he mouth of the : Hoekhookinff
river, that the Indians were gathering la great
numbers for the, purpose of striking a blow cii
some post of the frontiers. To meet this crisis
two of the most skilled and indefatigable spies
wore despatched to watch their‘movements an!
report. T
M’Cleland and White, two spirits that nevet
quailed at danger, and as unconquerable as thj
• . Lyman lion, in the month of Ootobor, and od
one of the balmy days of Indian summer, toot
leave of their fellows and moved on through
the thiok plum and hazel hashes with tho noiset
less tread of panthcre, armed with their uner!-
ring and trusty nfles They continued theib
march skirting tho pr&tnes, till they reached
that most remarkable prominence now known
by the name of Mount I Jeasant, the western ter
mination of which is a perpendicular cliff of rocks
of Borne hundreds of feet high and whoso summit,
frem a western view towers to tho clonds and
overlooks the vast plains below When this point
was gained our hardy spies held a position fro*
which they coaid see every movement of the In
dians below in tbo valley. »
Everyday added a new accession of warrior?
to.the company, .They witnessed, their exercises
of horse racing, running foot-races, iumpW
throwing tho tomahawk and dancing ? the oHI
saohems looking on with their Indian indif
ference, the squaws engaged in their nsniil
drudgery, and tho children engaged in their
playful gambols. Tho arrival of a new warrioV
was greeted with terrible shouts, which strikl
iug the mural face of Mount Pleasant, were
driven back in the various indentations of the
surrounding hills, produoing reverberations and
. echoes as if ten thousand fiends were gathered
nt a universal levee, bach yells would haro
struck terror to tho hearts of those unaccustomed
to Indian revelry. t
To our spies this was bat martial muGic—!
strains whioh waked their watchfulness and 1
newly strung their veteran courage. From thejr
oariy youth they had always been on tho fron
tier, and were well practised in all the subtilty
craft and conning of Indian warfare- aa well as
the ferocity and blood-thirsty nature of tbcs»
savage warriors They were, therefore! nit
likely to bo ensnared by their ounning. nor with
out a desperate conflict, to fall victims to thejr
.scalping-knives or tomahawks. On several oe
casinos, email parties left the prairie- and ah

these ooeaaions tho spies would hide iu the doer
fissures of the rocks on the west, and again lea to
their hiding plaoos, when theirnninvitedand ufl

For food, they depended on jerked Venison and
corn bread, with which their knapsaoks ■ were
well stored. . They dare not kindle a fire aijd

brought upon them the entire force of the In
dians, For drink, they depended on some rain

of the rocks; but in a short time thisstoro wis
exhausted, and MoCleland and White must aban
don their enterprise or find a now supply To
accomplish this most hazardous enterprise, Mb-
Cielaud,. being tho oldest, resolved to make the
attempt; and with his trusty rifle in his hand
and their two canteens strong across his shoul
ders, he descended, by a circuitous route- to the
prairie, skirtiog the hilt on the north: and uodfer
cover of the hazel thickets, he reached the river
and turning to a bold point of. the MU. he’ foudd
a beautiful spring within a few feep of the river
nowknown by the name of Cold Spring on the
farm of I). Talmadge, Esq. He filled bin
canteens, and returned in safety to his watchful
companion. It was now determined to have [ a
fresh supply of water every day, and this duty
was performed alternately, 1
On one of those occasions, after White h4d
filled his canteens, ho sat a faw moments watch- 1

of the bosom of tho earth, when the light sound
of footsteps caught hiß practiced ear-and upin

Releasing his hold, she informed him that she
had been a prisoner for ten years, and wastnkbn
from below Wheeling, and that the Indians had
killed all the.family, and that her brother and
herself were taken prisoners, bat hs succeeded
on the .second night, in making his escape- Dur
ing this narrative, White had drowned the eldjsr
squaw, and had let her float off with the ourredt
where it would not probably be found out soon
He now directed the girl to follow him and with
his usual speed and energy pushed for tho moatjt
They had scarcely gone half way when they
heard the alarm cry somo quarter of a milo down
the Btream It was supposed some party of In

just as tho body of the squaw floated past
White and the girl succeeded in reaching the
mount where M Clelnnd had been no indifferent
spectator to the Budden commotion among the

Tho prairie par les of warriors were seen itp

White and tho girl had scarcely arrived before
a party of some twenty warriors had reaoh&d
the eastorn acclivity of tho monnt and wore oau

the Bpies saw their swarthy foes as thoy glided
from tr eto tree and rack to rock till their pb

but to sell their lives aa dearly as possible and
this they ro3olved to do and advised the g rl to
