VOLUME XII.
DAILY MORNINS VOST.
THURSDAY MORNING::
From (he SaUlmon) Sun.
Portlier Particulars or Hie Lon of the
Steamship San Francisco.
We announced yesterday the safe airival at
New York of the unfortunate passengers of the
ill-fated steamship San Francisco, who were
rescued by the bark Kilby, and subsequently
transferred to the packet ship Lucy Thompson.
A passenger on the: Kilby, who pays a high
tribute to Capt. Low, her commander; fob his
noble efforts to save the passengers, he being
himself short of provisions and .in a disabled
condition, thuß shows how they fared daring the
two weeks they were oh board. ' '
“Our beds on board, the Kilby were cotton
and cotton bales, and onr daily, allowance a sea
biscuit, a small piece of fried ham, and a pint
of water, until at length we broke into the cargo;
and corn was added to our provender.. Not
having water enough to boil the corn, we resort
ed to parching it, and this: parched corn had
been our food, for seven days, when,: to our in
finite: joy, the Lucy .Thompson," Capt C. B.
Pendleton, .hove in sight, and took us on board.”
Fredcriok H. Southworth, Esq., another of
her passengers, states that the thirteen'soldiers
remaining on board the Kilby, volunteered to
stay, in order to work the pumps hnd keep her
afloat UJmd also, that Mrs. Major Wyse might
have ms off, but that she was so nervous from
exhaustion she would not venture to-trust her
self down the side. The Kilby was 68 days from
New Orleans, via Bermuda, when she fell in with
the San Francisco.
am. souTHwo&Tirs statement.
Frederick H. Southworth, Esq., who was
washed overheard at the time 60 many souls
found a watery grave, thus describes the fright
ful scene:
Myself and Mr. Rankin were amongthe .num
ber who were washed away,, and the only two of
this entire company who were edoceseful in re
gaining the ship. All the rest sank into the
jaws of death, and were rooked into an eternal
sleep by the roaring, swelling sea. As I oan
only describe the awful situation of these mor
tals by my own experience, I hope I will be ex
cused for alluding to myself. I well remember
I was lying in my stateroom on the after deck;
with a traveling companion, Mr. James Stook
weli, when there came a shock and sudden crash
of breaking timber, and I felt myself rolling like
a top in the water, with salt brine rushing into
my month and almost blinding me. When 1
arose to the surface, a borrowing sight was be
fore me. I was half a mite from the Bteatner,
and around me was about an acre of floating
timber. Immediately by my side came up from'
the deep, Mr. Stockwell, who caught hold of the
same stick of timber to whioh I, had clung for
safety. The stick Began to sink, and I seized
hold of another piece, and made the beat of' my
way to the wrecked steamer. Two or three huge
swells soon tossed me near the ship; I grasped a
rope forward of the wheelhonse, to which I
clang for refuge, raising and falling with the
pitching vessel. While in this situation.T saw a
man Btanding or. the paddle of the wheel who
was plunged into the ocean at every roll of the
steamer, and who probnhly perished. Losing
my strength, I droppe d from the rope to whioh
I clnng, and fortunately a friendly wave threw
me against the guard of the vessel, which
I seized hold of, and the next plunge car
rying me still higher on the guard, I was
enabled at last to crawl upon the forward deck,
and there with ay hand broke open a state
room window and crept into it half drowned.
While in the water, the sight aronnd me was
worse than death itself. When I rose to the
surface of the water, I saw about forty smug
gling for lifo, and about one-half of them had
blood streaming from wounds about their heads.
Being blinded by what I thought was the salt
water, I put my hand to my forehead to wipe
away the urine, when' I was surprised to find I
was bleeding myself from a wound on my brow.
It is, therefore, conclusive that moat of those
washed away were at tbeßame time wonnded by
the crashing timbers. Besides myself, Mr. Ran
kin was the only one Baved of the numbers who
were swept into the ocean.
Each was the force of the wnveß that they
broke in a part of the deck, and killed and in
jured several, besides deloging the passengers in
tbe lower cabins, and filling the saloons with
water. Capt. W. F. Gardiner, First U. S. Dra
goons, slept on. deck, and was not swept away
with the others, but at one time found a man by
his side, with a splinter thrust through his
head, whioh must have killed Kim instantaneous
ly. -
Subsequently, and every day until they vrero
rescued, the Rev. Mr. Cooper, on Episcopal cler
gyman, assembled the passengers in the lower
cabin, and offered up fervent jprayers for their
deliverance. Mr. South worth bears testimony
to the strength of the steamer, and thinks that
no vessel, hot bnilt of oak and iron, well-pu t to
gether, could have swum an hour in suoh a gale.
He adds, however:
“ Tho bulwarks and guards were not as strong
as they might have been; and perhaps to this we
owe our lives. Had tho gnarda and after-.cabin
been of iron strength, and not yielded to the
wave, such was its force that it would have over
tasood the ship, and not a single Aral would have
been left to tell the awful tale.”
DESTITUTE OFFICERS AND MEN.
Brevet Major Wyse and command lost every
thing, (their six months’ pay and supplies,) and
are now destitute. The loss of olothing to the
soldiers, it, is said, will be made good by the
Navy Department, and their sixmonths’ pay will
probably be refunded by Congress. The Seoro
tary of War has written to Capt Watkins, of tho
San Franoisoo, at Liverpool, requesting him to
make provisions for the comfort of the officers
and soldiers of the army who went off in the An
tarctic, and to take such measures as he.deems
beßt to bring them promptly baok to the United
States-. ■ -
The companies which Have been depleted by
thiß disaster will be immediately filled np by
now reernits, and sont out to the Paoifio, proba
bly by the way of Panama, as so much time.has
already been lost by the disaster.
Gen. Wool will Bail for California on the 20th,
as anticipated. It Is possible that two compa
nies of infantry may go ont with him, bat it is
not probable that they can be got ready in time.
- There aro still in California and Oregon the
■lth Infantry, three companies of Dragoons, and
three of Artillery, which must comprise our whole
Paoifio force until more troops can be sent.
7” THE LOST OTFIOERB.
Col. Washington leaves a wife and children,
understood to be now in Alexandria. Maj; Tay
lor leaves no children. Lieut. R. H. Smith was
married a few years agp in. New London, bnt his
wife remained at home on, account of delicate
health. Major Merohant (saved,) had allhis
family on board, except two sons, one of whom
is in the Naval School at Annapolis; and the
other in California'; but they are all reported
saved. The fatnily with him consisted of a wid
owed daughter and child, and three other ’daugh
ters. Hoj. Taylor and Llent. Smith have for
several years past been stationed at New London.
Suspension Bkidob over Lioicnrcf FalleS.—
This beautiful structure, uniting the cities of
Covington and Newport, just erected at a cost of
580,000, suddenly gave way about 5 o’clook yes
terday evening, and tambledjnto the river, a
The acoident was occasioned
by the breaking of the “ keys i. «. the snap
ping of the iron rods oonnejting the cables with
the “ anchorage.” * 'This occurred on the New
port side, at the moment that a drove of nine
teen cattle were on the structure near tho cen
'• ter. The oattle were driven by Mr, Joseph Moll-,
ridge, who doubting tho security of the bridge,
stood at a little distance and watching his cattle,
saw them take the dizzy plunge amid crashing
timber-and iron into the'icy river. Thirteen-of
the cattle managed to get ont, the rest are sup
posed tohave been killed by the fall, or drowned.
Two men on horaabaok had just entered from
the Covington side, and fell into the river, hut
singular to relate, escaped without dangerous
. injury. One of their horses got ont; the other
was killed. The names of the men who made
this narrow escape were Henry Claroom- and
Taylor Keys. ■ ~
Tho bridge only a few days' ago waa taketj off
tho hands of the contractors by the towns, nnd
a toll gate established. We understand that its
capacity of existence was never tested before the
job was taken from the contractors, a neglect
that is quite unpardonable, r^Cin.’Conufiircial.
