COMMERCIAL POST.
WEEKLY BEVIEW OF FITTSBUBGH SIABKET.
0»ioi or th* Duly. Mdiutnm post, r
Friday, liecember SO, 1863. J
InboßinoM rinceour. last woekly review, wo have but
little change to note. The recurrence of thoholidnyp, to
gether, with the cioEingofilver navigation,by obstruction
of icc, has considerably interrupted business' transactions*
• Receipts of Flour, and Produce generally has greatly fitllcii
off, and . from present appearances, will coutiuuo fo until
navigation opens. The water iu our Canal for Iho season,
has been drawn off, and is therefore closedi and our ship
pers eastward are entirely dependent upon tbs Railroad,
we are glad to notice that a change iu tariff rates on Flour
has been made by the Pennsylvania railroad to Phllodalphia
and Baltimore, which Is now DO cents to either dty,Jn placo
of $l, as heretofore.. This will enable Western shippers to
send their Flour by Uds route, which Is decidedly the cheap
est and mostdesirable. '
In-oar markets wo find but little change to notice from
that of last week except In Flour, which under the effects
of the European, advices, together with the very limited
stock in this market, and tho small supplies coming for
ward has caused an improved demand, with a correspond
ing advonco in price, and judging from the tone of tho Pa
cific’s news, which arrived on Tuesday, prices and demand
aro not likely to recede soon.' The advance established is
fully 25 to 60 cental' bbl.
The following, excellent review, wo copy from tho Now'
York Economist, of 23d iitst, wbich may be found Interesting
to our Miltursand Flour dealers:
“A fair Eastern business bos been done, and now that
the river is closed* attention is directed to quantify bon*,
and to the probable quantify that is -likely to reach ns, by
: nilwev. The stock hero does not exceed 27 G.OOO bbls, touch
of It hold for foreign account, which Is rmw likely to go for
ward the low freights fovonng shipments. From the into
rior wo leamthe supply of Flour and Wheat, is very mod
ernto from the Fast we learn the stock is qulto light, and
it appears to Us that if the entire supply In this State reach-'
c* os that It would not have thesllghtest Influenceon our
market, as from private advices received by the Ucrmann,
a etat of things exists iu Franco and Belgium that is really
alarming more so than existed in - Ireland in 184 G-17, and
tdlour-suppbeswllibobut a drop In tho bucket to meet
tbclr wants In making this statement, wo do not wish to
s Imulato our market, as prices arc already very high, but
simply to state facts from tho private advices before ns for
tho bentfitofour readers. There can bo nndoubt tho French
Government have concealed tho real state of thing* thure
until it can bo disguised no longer, and wo only regret wo
hav not a largo stock to meet this immense demand.” ■ Wo
also copv the followlngiaterestinß statement:
The Mark Lane Exprus, in the course of on elaborate
artic e on the supply of breadstnffs for tho British market,
\ resents certain reports and estimates which are of’the
highest interest to dealers here. The Express answers a
c ofqo stlons, eleven in number, put with a view to
eti it f 11 Information on the subject. It Is to thelast ques
t n nod answer that wc would draw attention. It Is ask
ed Ila th) result of the harvest been such as to warrant
the alarm at prefont existing? ” To this the Express replies,
thni Its Information from Ireland and Scotland Is an “em
phatic negative, n while two or throe of Its Eoglish cofrca
pondents arc in tho affirmative, although with the latter
the apprehension of a general war ; is generally the baslaof
their opinion. . >
Tho Express then proceeds to reduce its facts into shapes.
According to the best authorities tho avorngo produce of the
United Kingdom should be
. Wheat : .........18,000,000 qm.
Oats .....32,000,000 do
Barley. —. 10 0004500 do
Tbn estimate deficiency In Wheat this year is one-fotfnh
and Oats ooe-eixth, tho latter, however, neutralised by
short crops of beans, peas and hay. Tho deficiency in Oats
il ls assumed, can be mndo up by imnortathns, including
Indian Coni and tha feeding staffs. The complainant of tho
Wheal stock therefore remains alone to be considered.
The produce of Wheat in tho United Kiugdom, as abovo,
Atatol is 18.000,000 qrt., but the consumption is 20,000,000.
Tlifl statement then stands thus:-—Arerago produco'of
wheat In the United Kingdom reckoned at ...18,000,000 qrs.
but as the crop Is deficient, deduct 4,600,-
000 qrs.. as well as the quantity required for
b,v*J. which, allowing for tbo Increased sowing
this season, may be reckoned at 3, / iOf.pmlue«» f
n.00Q.000 quarter 5............. ......... 7,K>o,oCOqrf.
W> have thus a produce of only.-. -.„....10,fi00.0(K} qrt"
to meet a consnraptiou .20,000,000 qrs.
shotting a deficiency 0f......... ............. qrs.
but as there arc only ten months consumption
to provide for, wo must deduct from this *
leaving* deficiency in wheat alone thOOO/OfiG qr*.
We It-aro. assuming these figure to he rom-it, to our io
tcrnuM readers to judge, I»ow a drfid*»ncyou,cbt
to affect the prwot of the Wheat and Flour tnar
kct. Unless there la an erregfoos error aorotiwbere, ihs do
