*VfEW PATENT AMALGAM PEN.-rThls Important in
:_iV| Tcbtion removes the,two great obstacles to,the uni
versal use of the Steel Pen, Vi* : their rigidityV'and their
rapid de.atructiou '-by the corrosive action of the ink. : In
mmntely examining the quill pen in the act of writing; it
will be seen that Vie action U consisting, of
a gentle yielding backward-action immediately above the
nib of the pen; and,'second; the “scissors’* nation, or
spreading open of the points to permit the fiow-of the Ink.
This compound movement—which steel, pens hitherto
never have had—gives to the quill ItsßoXibUisy, and that
peculiar springy play which Is so agreeable to the hand,
and which seems to suit the action of the> muscles of the.
fingers; yielding, as it does, to tho slightest pressure, with
out cramping thehand. The efforts of all eteelpeD makers
havebben directed to the attainment of this essential qual
ity of flexibility, and they have had recourse to an innu
merable variety of cracks and* piercings to attain it. The
inventors of-the Patent Amalgam Pen found, from a series
of experiments, that the whole practice ef the trade hod in
this respect boon erroneous r-.that, ha .combination'..of
“cracks** and “piercings’*could producethe'derixpd action;'
if tAc ordinary form Ousted pa%wre adhered to. This
point being gained* they avoided the plan hitherto adopted
for attaining flexibility, and gavo a pocuHaf fora to. the
metal,by hich they manngad to combine.the “sdasors”
oction of tho ordinary stool pen with the agreeable flexlbil
ity of the quill. The second difficulty to oe ovcrcbme was
. of less magnltndo, but still of great importance to the eon
; sumers of stoel pens. Every one is aware of the corrosive
oction of the ink oh the ordinary steel pen. Evcn withlho
. greatest caro, it speedily destroys the delicately smooth oof
fiice of tho pen. So. serious a drawback Is'this from; tho
utility of the stoeVpsu» that thonsanda are induced to pur
chase gold' pens, at ah enormous, cost, almost exclusively ,
because of .the anti-corrosive hiiallty of th^ : metal. The
Inventors have removed this evil by their compound metal,',
which possessesall the necessary qualltiesofsteel,^with the
additional merit of rcsl&ng tho cnemfral actienof the ink;
