In an affray on the Monongaheln bridge on Thursday lost,
died on Sunday morning, at the residence of hisvfkther, in
South Pittsburgh. " " •;, '.
Lowry held on inquest on the body, (m Sunday.
Important facts were developed atthia investigation which
seemto testeo-tbe guilt upon Klegg, Instead or Hoxenbaugh,
who, it appeared from the evidence elicited at thoexamina-.
tlon before the Mayor, strnfck.the fetal blow. .
Martin Myere, who uoccmpaaSed.Carsoß, and the two Bob
bin*, states that Cat«m, when* the two parties met on the;
bridge, tbtew a chew of tobacco in Hoxenbaugh’s face;.an
altercation ensued between the two, which was participated:
in by Klegg; Samuel Bobbins fearing a fight, threw himself
between Canon and Hoxenbaugh. Shortly aderwardsC&r-"
son wasatabbed. and Klegg and ran away, leaT
dug Hoxenbaugh with Bobbins. The'latter charged him
with haying stabbed Carson; this Hoxenbaugh denied, and
hanrimfl .ft/AMym a knife which he had in his hands, stating
that he had not used tt, and only-intended to nselt in Self
defence. TbU knife, which is free from marks of blood, Is

William EL Bean and Josiah Young, l employed in Lorens
Wightman’a glahs works, (where Klcgg worked,) state that
date on Thursday night, Became to the glasshouse, evi
dently much disturbed, nervous and restless; In answer to
their questions he : mads equivocating* answers, until at
- length he stated that Hoxenbaugh had got into "a fight, and
.that he (Elegg) had stabbed his amndfant, and he oeUred,
“ cut him almost i* two.” This answer he repeated to both
Bean and Young; he showed them his hlocrfy hnifej and
aslmd What he could do to avoid the consequences of his act.
He finally went homo, where he remained until arrested by
Hague and Stelnburg. His conduct afterwards, when on/
examination before the Mayor, bears strongly against him.
This testimony, with other, evidence,- corroborative, wes
elicited at the inquest. A post mortem-examination was
made pf the body of thedeceasedby
The wound was very deer, penetrating, inwardly and up.
wardly. The jury returned a verdict that Carson came to,
his death from a wonhdinflicted by cither Klegg or Hoxen

Mr. Carson was an engineer in the Sligo Iron Works of
Lyon,,Bhort>4 Co. He was highly respected byall his ao-.
- quaintances.

In Woods’ original plan of the city* f Ilia contended, by the
plaintiffs that the legislature, in allowing the city tolay

the creation of a street of the usual width. The property in
dispute, it is contended, runs from the front of .raid street to
low water mark. If the suit should bo decided In favor of
plaintiff*, the city will lose largely, as, no doubt, salts will
be brought by other persons. On trial.

letter ont of the port office in Allegheny city, addressed to
the « John Knox l, Protestant Asscoiation.” .
Hon. Charles Shalcr appeared for the Bolted States,, and
Col. Black and M. L Stewart, Esq., for the defence. 1 t .
MUler was charged with taking a letter oat of the Alle
gheny Port Office,in Juno addressed to theLodgemen
tioned. The letter was written from Tarentum. It appear
ing that ho was authorised to take the letter the Jury
returned avcrdict of not guilty, without leaving tho bos. *..
The com of the Untied States vs. Joseph Randolph, In
dicted fi»r uttering forged naturalisation papers, was called
up- The defendant did not appear, and his recognizances
were declared forfetiod. - -•- : •.

ISQCEST.—The jury empanneled to Inquto Into Ihb causes
vbkb led to the late explosion of the steam boiler at Nichol
son * Payne’s foundry, in the Eighth Ward,wbJch resulted
in the death of William Meahy, met at Aid. MaJot's office,
in the Sixth Ward, on Saturday evening last. ■ ■ '
The jury, after some converratlon In relation to the sub*
Ject under c- nsideration, came xo.tho following verdict :
u WiiUam Meahy, the deceased, came to hU death from
Injuries received at and from the explosion of the ateam
holler, at tho foundry of Nicholson A Payne I *, in the Eighth
Ward; and that the jury have found no evidence which
would justify them luattaehing blame to the engineer”
We are informed that those who were injured at the time or
the explosion are doing well, and wEI eoon recover. Tho
death of William Meahy, was the only fatal case resulting
from the disaster.
MatomiTt w Axuoaxinr.—Our Whig friends, it appear*
are not so united in Allegheny* on the subject of the May
oralty, aa they were in this city. The Enterprise Intimate*
that thedelegates when they meet to-morrow will hare some
trouble In making a candidato for the Whig party, and they
• may very probably chocee one that has not yet been pre
sented to the public. Neither Campbell nor M'MQlaa ran
delegates in the First Ward; - • ■•- ■ • ■ " • :
- The Enterprise also states that the friend sof Mr, Park in
tend contesting the election In the Second Ward, as it is al
leged that they brought jSce persons to the polls to vote,
whichwould have given hhn three of a majority, but that
they were closed a few minutes before the appointed time.
Should they accomplish this, Mr. Park would be elected on
the first ballot.

Essob.—ln these days or railroad accidents, tho
hereof tea kill off people,who enjoy the questionable pleas
ure of reading their own obituaries. Bach was the case in
regard to the death of Mr: Yanhorn, a Conductor on a wood
train, oh tbe Pennsylvania railroad. Wo announced the
other day that bo had been killed. It was all a mistake.
The person who came to his end in the manner narrated,
ir*» a drunken Hibernian, who attempted* by the force of
his body to stop the train j ho couldn't, and so fell a victim
to his love of experiments.
Patti Paxiancts.—A man named Patrick Hughes was ar
rested yesterday, and examinedbefore Alderman PMkin*
son, on a charge of false pretences made against biro* by P.
C. Maguire. It appears that Hughes obtained from Mqgulre
thirty dollars; he afterwards returned fifteen to the prose*
cutor.stating that the money ho received was had, and. tho
brokers had discounted fifteen dollars for changing tho
notes. It appears, however, that the money was good, and
was held in $5OO for nfurther hearing today.

passenger «n the train which arrived from -Philadelphia on
Bohday evening, of an accident resulting, it is
fatally, which oceurired ten or twelvo miles weitof Phila
delphia. A young man, a draughtsman in one of the foun
dries In that city, seeing a train coming in an opposite di
rection (he was ; riding on the engine at the time) and cot
thinking Jthat there was a double track; jumped from tho
locomotive, while it was going veiy fast; and foiling,broke;
hisseull. He was conveyed to his residence, In Philadel
phia, in a critical condition. ■ .

There hns been a falling off in the demand .for flour and
wheat since the week opened, occasioned .-partially oj unfa
vorable advices from abroad, hut more particulariyon?ae
count of advanced rates of freights. On Monday boats but
up prices to 750 a barrel for flour, pork $l. oil and wMaky
4125, corn,wheat, oats, bran, tobacco, and 4oc a nun

ed. In the afternoon, howover; holders advanced their

weather was unfavorable to-day, and packers
generally having supplies for to-morrow, the demand was
quite limited, and this,in connection with the heavy fcoling

experience all the comfort arising fromawarm rammer at

impaired by coming in contact with an over-heated surface.
These results are produced, in part, by constructing the
furnace in such a manner that the heat is diffused at a low*
er temperature than is usual with any other Furnace now

room for making a tight sand and clay Joint, preventing
the escapoof noxious ond sooty gases into the room, soan
uoying to the occupants, and so injurious to too health and
to tto warmed Is taken directiy from the outside j
of the building in all cases, thus Insuring a supply of pure, ]
wholesome air for breathing, and tho other Important Amo
tions required by tho human system—tire oxye* n » not “•
fected, nor tho organic matter in the air carbonized by com
ing in contact with an over-heated surface, ns with other
furnaces, and headaches and other disagreeable sonsations
are prevented by this means—and in consequonco of the
warm air not making too largo demands upon the longs
and evaporating surfitceof the skin, to supply the moisture
which it has lost in passing over a red hot surface. In
proof of this, attention is colled to the certificates of Pro
fessor SnUman, of Valo College, New Haven, and to those
of other scientific persons who bare examined Oils subject.
