"\fEW PATENT AMALGAM PEN.—This important iu
.J3l vention removes tho two great obstacles to the un!
versal use of the Steel Pen, viz: their rigidity, and ihoir
rapid destruction by the.corrosive action of the-ink. In
minutely examining the quill pen la the act of jwriting/ it
will be seen that the action is compound, consisting, first, of
a gentle yielding backward action Immediately above the
nib of the pen, and, second, thoscissors” action, ; «r
spreading open of thapoints to permit the flowof. the ink.
This compound movement—which steel pens; hitherto
never have had—gives to the quill Us flexibility, and that
peculiar springy play which is so agrceable-to the band,
and which seems to suit the action of the muscles of the'
fingers; yielding, as it does, to the slightest pressure, with
out cramping thehand. The efforts of all steel pen makers
have been directed to the attainment of this essential qual
ity of flexibility, and they have bad recourse to an innu
merable variety of cracks and piprelngvto attain It The
iuventorsof the Patent Amalgam Fen fohnd, from a eerie*
of experiments, that the whole practice ef the trade had in
this respect, been erroneous—that* nb combination' of
cracks” and “ piercings” could produce the desired action,
if the ordinary form of the tied pen were adhered to. ; This
point being gained, they avoided the plan hithdrto adopted
for attaining flexibility, and gave a peculiar form' to .the
metal, by hich they manoged to combine the “scissors”
action of the ordinary steel pon with the agreeable flexibil
ity of the quilL The second difficulty .to be overcome
of less magnitude, but still of great importance to the con- 4
sumcrs.of steel pens. Every one is aware of the corroslve
action of .the ink on. the ordinary steel pen. - Even with the
greatest care, it speedily destroys the delicately smoothsur
faoeof the pen. So serious a drawback is this from thu
utility of the steel pen, that thousands aro inducedto pur
chase, gold pens, at an enormous cort, almost exclusively
becatiFo of the anti-corrosive quality of that metah . The
inventors have removed this evil by their compound metal,
which possesses all tbo n*cessary qualities of steely with the
additional merit of resisting the.chemical action of the Ink.
