township Agricultural Societies, and plowing matches are
held under their hatronage erory year. w« know of no
scheme so well calculated to derolope the resources of an
agricultural country* aa the formation of such societies;
may their number Increase. • We are indebted to a corret*
pondent for the following:
On Thursday the 17th instant, the BnowdenTownship
Plowing Match c&zno oft The morning wasunfavoreblo; os
It rained • incessantly until about © o’clock, hut notwith
standing the rain, ouf gallant Snowden hoy* were on the
ground, at the boar appointed.
The plowing was done on the farm of Jamos Sigler, and
fifteen plows were entered as competitors. At 10 o’clock, a.
the plowing commenced, witnessed by a large crowd of
people. The plowmen all deserve great credit for the man*
ner In which they executed their work, and also for the
quiet and orderly waylu which It was done. Theplowlng
was well done, ail of it. and considering that this wastbo
first effort or the kind here, we can safely say, It is hard to
beat.
After the plowmen had finished and left the field, then the

In the caso of White vs. Belts, the jury returned a ver*
; diet for the plaintiff, of $135,74.
i F. & "W. MvFabcr vs. Robert Wearer; No. 547, November
term, 1852. Staler and Umbstaettor for plalntifb, and
Weaver nod Kyster for defendant. This was an action to
j recover a claim for grate ban and machinery put np by
. y plaintiffs, In defendants salt works, in Westmoreland coun
ty. The defendants allego that a portion of the work,
amounting to $ll4, iras done while the works were ncea
piod by a man named Swagman.. The remainder of the
debt was not contested. A verdict was rendered in favor of
the plaintiff, for 193.84.
John Barton tr. James Wood well, George Singer,M. Hod*
kioson, Robert Davits W. F. Wellock* H. U. Ryan and Wm.
IT. Garrard, and Charlotte Blum*, administralix of Frede
rink Blame, deceased; No. 103. January term, 1853. Rid
dell for plaintiff, and Foster and Rood for defendant*. Plain
tiff claims $l5O for professional services. A verdict was
* rendered for the defendants.
Judge Shannon, who has been presiding since the 14th
. last, discharged the jurors from farther attendance. In
- i six davs’ sessions, there were eighteen verdicts, two judg
ments by confessions, three continuances, three settled by
parties and three nonsuits. This may be considered as
very fast work. The jurors were thanked for their punc
tuality. • '

Tha grounds on which this prowcution is based, Is well
known. Last spring Mr. Myers loft this city with the Inten
tion of taking up his residence In California; at Harrisburg,
he was arrested, at the suit of Reis, and brought back 1o
this city, to answer tha ch&rgn of secreting his goods with
the Intention of defrauding his creditor*. Judge Shannon
heard the case, and diflmtecd. the suit, honorably dischaxg
tag Mr. Myera from custody. The case is on trial.
Firs.—'That Match Factory Adair.— Abont two o'clock.
yesterday mearning a fire broke oat la the Match Factor? of
M 8. Johnson Inna street, between -Penn and Buquesao
Way. The fire burned with great fierceness, destroying Use
Match Factory In a short time. 11 extended to the Livery
Stable occupied by Andrew Jackman, and it too was de
stroyed. Tut further progress of tha lire was stayed by a
largo warehouse, which adjoins the Livery Stable. The
- walls of tbe Urery Stable and the Factory are loft stand
ing, but the interior part of both buildings has. been de
stroyed.
Tbe Match Factory was owned by Ur. Johns, and the
building by. a Mr. White. There was no insurance on
either. 000 thousand dollars we snpposo will cover the
loss of tbe owner of the building, as well as tboloesof Mr.
Johns. Tbe Livery BUblo was owned by John A. Wills,
Esq. Whether It was insured or not, we have yet to learn.
Mr. Jackman used this stable for tbe purpose of keeping in
It bis carriage horses and a portion of his carriages, the-re
mainder of his stock being in his stahleon Penn street. Py
the fire be lost a lot of harness, baQalo robot, and four large
sleighs. Fire hundred dollrrs will cover hi* loss.
We hope Councils, at their next meeting, will take some
action in regard to this Match Factory. Within tbe last
year, throo fires, have resulted from it, -and unless the
strong arm of the law Is bronpht into use, and Mr. John*
forced to locate his factory ouUido of the..city, we may ex
pect an equal number by this lime next year. It is a great
cr nuisance, and afar more dangerous one, than many oc
cupations which have to be carried on out of. the city.

the counter of the bank, notes of a less denomination than

ofassanltingaman named Alexander Blunders. A war
rant for tho arrest of the Captain was issued.
Fixed. —Mayor Riddle yesterday fined two carriage dri
vers two dollnrFeach, for disorderly eomloct. Tbo drivers
fined were arrested in front of the Monongahela House,
where, it seems, a number of them have- a fashion of ma
king themselves as dlsagrecablo as posaiblejto passers-by, by
their btaspbemouß conversation and disorderly conduct.

abating the evil.

been, for several reasons, abandoned, and the Led Bank

heating of tho air, and destruction or injury to the
Furnace.
The joints of the Furnace arc so constructed as to afford
room for making a tight sand and day joint, preventing
tbo escape of noxious and sooty gases into the room, so an
noying to the occupants, and Vo injurious to too health and
furniture.
The air to bo warmed la tnkon directly from the oatsido
of the bulldf djld all euros, thus insuring a supply of pure,
wholesome air for breathing, and the other importantfunc
tlons required by the huiunu system—the oxygen Is not af
fected, nor the organic matter in thn air carbonized by com
ing la contact with nn orer-honted surface, ns with other
fUrnaces, aud beadnrbos aud other disagreeable.sensations
are prevented by this menus—and in consequence of the
warm air not making too large demands upon the lungs
and evaporating surface of the skin, to supply tbo moisture
which it hns lost In passing over n red hot surface. In

.feasor SUliman, of Tale College, Now Ilaven, and to' those
of other scientific persons who have examined this subject.
