TITESDAI' MORNING - OCTOBER._2E.
DESTHIICTIVE FIRE-421C31ND1AE.T.5M...-4)1/
day night about half-past eleven o'clock, (and .
after our_ paper for Monday hid gone to prate s )
•• a fire broke ant in the extensive foundry of M.
'William Irwin, on Main and Cherry streets, in
, the Fourth ward, Allegheny. Before the en
,
glues arrived, the bad gained such head.
way, that it was impossible to extinguish them,
and the entire foundt7 building was destroyed.
The foundry formed an angle, the ends of which
fronted on 'Cherry and Main streets. It was
built of brick, a short 'time since. The engine
room and niachine shop attached to the foundry,
were also burnt. ='
In the angle of the foundt7 there is a large
brick house, five stories high, occupied by Mr.
Irwin as a store house. It was filled with cast
ing, patterns, &c., to the value of between thirty
and thirty-five thousand dollars. This building
took fire, and would undoubtedly have been de
stroyed, butfor the exertions made to save it by
Mr. Irwin, and two of his workmen, named
MeCieland and Bascom. At the time the ware
house took fire, the firemen were busily engaged
fighting, and they were so occupied with their
amusement, that instead of being , of any use in
extinguishing the flames, they retarded tho
efforts of others to subdue them. Mr. Irwin
and his assistants, entered the store house, while
stones and ether missiles were flying between
the combatants, (the Fairmount and American
companies)'at a fearful rate. After they bad
got:in, the firemen instead of aiding them, turned
the'hose upon Mr. Irwin whenever he made his
appearance at the window to receive the buckets
of water handed him by his assistants. The
efforts of Mr. Irwin and his assistants to save
the building were successful, although it was on
fire several times. Mr. l.'s loss will amount to
$15,000. His insurance, we are informed, will
cover half the amount. In what office, we
know not.
The flames extended from the foundry to two
two story frame buildings, and another small
{ratite building, geed as a grocery store. All
these building were consumed. They adjoined
the-foundry on Main street. One of the houses
was the property of a widow lady named Mrs.
Denry. It was consumed, and with It, a small
stook of groceries, which Mrs. D. kept for sale.
There was no insurance, and her loss will
amount to $2OOO. By the fire, she is left with
out a home.
The owner of the other frame building, James
Macheller, will lose about $l6OO.
In the rear of the foundry, a house belonging
to :Sir. Peter Atkinson was considerably injured.
The lois is covered by itieurance.
A. °Doper shop on Saw 'Mill alley, was totally
rdesteoyel. The owner, Henry Myers, will lose
,sbont WOO.
A large frame house on the bank of the river,
, k which was occupied by six or eight families, was
.much injured by the flames. It belonged to Leon
ard Walters, and the insurance on it ($860) will
.cover the loss.
he stable and coal house belonging to Fehl's'
hotel, situated on Saw Mill alley, were destroyed
by the fire. By the exertions which some of the
firemen made, the hotel was sated.
The total loss by the fire, will amount to near
$30,000. It was undoubtedly the work of an
incendiary.
Mr. Irwin intends rebuilding his foundry im
mediately.
Finuttun's Ittor.—The riot referred to above,
took pilule between the Fairmount and American
companies—the latter belonging to Allegheny
City. The Fairmount was on Wayne street, and
the American on Liberty street,—some *attr
thrown accidentally by the members of the Fair
mount on the members of tho American, caused
theiatter to bring their engine on Wayne street,
and throw a fall stream on the Fairmount
men. It was returned with interest, and the
American men were driven from the ground.
The fury of the members of the Fairmount then
turned upon the engine of their late assailants
-and it was completely disabled from use. The
-arms and gallery pipe were brokon, and the sides
.of -the engine broken in.
.Several men belonging to both companies,
-wore injured during the fight. Clark Honer, a
..anember of the American, was so much injured,
that he was carried, home by his companions.
A bystander was stabbed in the neck, during the
fight. lie was carried to Dr. Ilartmeyer's office,
where his wound was dressed.

GREAT FIRE IN CINCINNATI..
Croorswatt, Octobers 22
A fire broke out this evening, In tho bake-house of Bobt.
Getty, near centre block, bounded by Main, Sycamore,
Front and Second streets, which communicated to Wilshire,
Bristol & Co's. liquor stare—also, M. B.P.oss and N. 11. &

rapitily,in the rear of Mitchell & Rammelbtices furniture
establishment, which is burning, together with varus
w ar ehouses on an alley running from Secondto Front sts.
The efforts of the firemen, so far, seems to bale no effect In
checking the the, which, at present writhig; $ o'clock, is
raging fearfully, and threatens to be the largest fire experi
enced for several years. Fortunately It has been - raitting
most of the day, otherwise matters would Is, much worse.
The firemen have got partial control of the fire, but It is
still raging. The buildings destroyed are, Wilshire. Bristol
k cek. pork-house, N. M. Flarons' pork-horse, and B. Ross'
Minor store, N. IL & G. 11. Dads' liquor store, Robert Getty's
bakery establishment, Geo. F. Davis & Co's pork-house,
and the rear buildings of Mitchell et Rumtuelberger's rani:l
bw° estaidishmenn, the main building Is saved, together
with several warehousesbelonging to Sycamorestreet build
ings. Cunningham, Williams .t CO. and John Streaky &Co.,
grocers, are damaged somewhat. and were saved with great

been several times on fire, and Its destruction is still threat
ened. The buildings on the east of Sycamore - street, Includ
