MOSDLY MORNING
MORNING POST JOB OFFICE
We have now employed In our Job Office an
unusual number:of excellent job printers, and
are , prepsred.tu,exeentu all orders with neatness
unsurpassed, and with a speid that shaltiot lie
beat.
Don Pgatt.;--The result of - the election seems
to WINO iottle(tall the 0414T.P.Vbroies ltalePS the '
Pittsburgh newspapers;-and-the old Post has
not been'aesalled fro*lltit'titiarteiiince the re
sult of the eteation-'itam-knotra.. We are satis
fied to have It so fora time, that we may turn
our attention to other matters than nob person
al eontroversice de interest our readers but lit
tle. , :We interidnow to devote our attention to
the news; and give our readers the earliest and
most rbliable newel from all quarters. And there
Is now a prospect of having winch important in
formation to detail. If , wor commences in earn
est in Europe, every person will be anxious to
road accounts of its progress and events. In
about forty days Oongress will moot; and It will
doubtless be a sessisn of great interest and Im
portance; and we shall keep ear readers posted
up on all matters of interest occurring at Wash
ington. Then comes the, State Legielature in
January, in the doings of which all aro interest
ed. We shall make arrangements to make known
all occurrences nt llarrisburg. We shall have
correspondents there, whose letters cannot fail
to interest. la fact, we expect to make the Post
a paper that the ptiplo cannot do without- We
would rie:ciSi)ts a" thousand or two more subscri
bers, if they come quick. Wo want them just
for the gratification we hope It will afford them
to read our paper. Oar subscription Bet showe
a handsome increase within thelast three months.
Bat we expect a great many moro yet. Send in
your names, and the dimes, fellow-citizens ; and
we trill leave it to you to say whether you get
a good-paper. or not.
Basoaron.—New YOKK fIITCLALI I .—We boast
a little sometimes, partly for the amusement of
our neighbors, partly because we can't help it,
and partly because we don't wish to help it.
Bat wo eonfeei the last numbir of the New York
Herald, almost convinces, tls .that s ve are very
modest and humble sort of announces
its stietelitt, an plans and proSPCds, 'with
flourish of .braggart insolence and nonsense per
fectly amazing. It states that its eirculatien
has reached the enormous total of 103,000; be
ing p 2,000 daily, end 51,000 weekly. It pro ,
claims New York city as the centre and soul of
the country ; nod the Herald as the soul sad
centre of New York; and the great luminary
front which radiates all the intellectual light the
country enjoys. Such is the Herald', modest
opinion of itself. After thus eulogizing its own
greatness and glory, It proceeds to characterize
all the other newspapers of the country as mere
I miserable reprints of the Herald. The New York
Tribune it considers a failing concern. It claims
the credit of having done mare to elect the last
- two Presidents, than all the other agencies
throughout the length and breadth of the Be_
public. It then comperes itself with the Lon
don Timer, and very kindly concedes the fact
that the Times is a /itt/s ahead of it yet. But a
new project is in contemplation, which It is sup
posed will enable it to eclipse the Londoo organ
beyond doubt. .It Is proposed to publish in Bos
ton, .Philadelphia, and Baltimore, an edition of
the Herald, simultaneously with the Issue atNew
York, all under the same proprietorship, and all
under the control of 31. r. James Gordon Ben
nett. Thus, the Herald commences the work of
colonization. Like the United States Bank, of
yore, with its head in Philadelphia, azd
its branches an over the land, so the //erchf,
with ite head at Now York, and its branches in
every large city throughout the Republic, is to
form and control the public opinion of the coun
try, as the old Bank controlled its financial af
fairs.
We very much doubt the success of the scheme,
and humbly advise Mr. Bennett to spare his
dimes. Tho people of this country are op
posed to monopolies ; and if we are not much
mistaken the people of this country would pre
fer to derive their opinions from a purer and
more judicious source than the 17erald. That
great paper is much less read for its opinions,
k han for the vast amount of fucts and informa
tion it gathers from all quarters, with a degree
of enterprise and perseverance, that certainty
entitle it to great credit.
The scheme propoied, however, is but a plan,
cunningly devised, to get more subscribers to
the NEW Tout: herald; and the pretence. of
simultaneous publication in different citlea is
easily arranged, by the help of railroads and
telegraphs, no as to make all tributary to the
central concern at New York. And when, after
a short experiment, the branches are withdrawn,
the subscribers to them all will be supplied with
the New York Herald. It is a grand scheme;
worthy the scheming brain of the self-styled
"Napoleon of the Press." It contains, like all
his plane and purposes, a good deal of humbug,
a good deal of intelligence and enterprise, and a
very sharp bye to business ; and a grasping after
power and gold as insatiable and unscrupulous
as was ever displayed by the' exploded Bank.
Let it be tried, however. We like the Herald
for its facts and intelligence; and care little for
its opinions.
Tus JOUILAAL.—Tho editor of the Journal is
quito resolute in denying that there will be war
in Europe. He speaks so positively that we are
almost led to suppose that ho has some private
understanding with the parties, which in due
time he may condeucend to make known to the
public. We would commend to his attention,
however, tho following clip from tho Now York
Herald. It not only looks decidedly warlike, but
shows that a state of war actually exists at the
present time. Wo think the Journal will have
to give it. up that it cannot see much further
than ita neighbors :

The judicious applie'atiotintinanures to land,
involving alit does the feedinrof plants, is a
matter of tbo greatest moment to the cultivator
of the soil, Qn no subject is there more differ
ence of opinion among farmers than as to the
benefit to be de_rived - from the application of limo
as a fertillzir: Conclusione drawn by different
individuals, residing in different localities, are
found to be vastly conflicting. Long experience
end much study have fully convinced me that
this difference of opinion arises solely from a
want of a proper knowledge of the soil, and the
element of which it is composed, upon which ex
periments- have-been tried. Thatat requiresa.
lorge.amoent of study,of the nature of the soils,,
and of the recks,on whiel l .tbey-rt l / 2 3Was well ae
the element of the , plants to be grown upon
them, to enable the farmer to apply such fer
tilizers as will best promote the . health and vi- •
corona growth of crops, is a fact that much ex
perience and observation have demonstrated. .
I have known twenty bushels of lime to be
applied to the acre, and the result was, the crop
was nearly doubled ; ano'ther farmer in tho same
neighborhood.makes the same application, and
finds that the produce of his field is not at all in
creased. The failure in the latter case arose sim
ply from the fact that the nature of the sell was
not fully understood, and it wanted other ele
ments than limo In its composition. In the com
munity whore I reside, lime has beta used tar the
last few years, in different quantities by most
farmers, and the result has uniformly been (when
applied to a sandy "loam, with a subsoil of clay)
beneficial. I apply it as follows:—Take nn
slacked lime, in quantity about fifty bushels to the
acre, sow it broadcast over the fields, let It lie
until it has become sir-slacked I then plough It
under, sowing about a week subsequent to plough-.
leg. I have ever found corn boat adapted ae the .
first crop after preparation, wheat or oats as the
second. To this manner I have proven by expe
riment, that land lying aide by aide, and possess
ing the same elements in Its composition, will.
produce fifty per cent. more than that which Is

misty labyrinths of geological conjecture, and
cot:eludes that as the forests aro Increasing in
fertility and productive power, that agricultural
writers must bo incorrect on that subject. It is
evident that the forests are Increasing in fertili
ty and productive power. So are the wild prai
ries of Illinois. Brazil and the steppes of Central
Asia. But the arguments that prove the in
crea.log fertility of then, prove the exhaustion
of the Boil under the mole of tillage practised
by many farmers. While in the former case, the
vegetable matter returns to the toil, .In a decom
posed condition, affording tratriment for continu
ed vegetable growth. While in cultivated fields
there is a marked contrast, the organic vegeta
ble matter le removed in the form of crops, and
the land deteriorates annually unless fertilising
elements are supplied. When the fertilizing ele
ments of the soil become exhausted, hy.contlan

the animal economy. It is a matter of common
observation, that land when first cleared yields

aiNdiULAR MILITAET DISCIPLINE —A rather
singular cane of military discipline has lately
occurred In Dorchester, and has caused consid
erable excitement. - There is, it appears, a num
ber of boys in that town, who hare organized
themselves into a company for the purpose of
"playing soldier;" a lad about 14 years of ago,
and the son of a respectable citizen, acting as
captain. A few days since our miniature cap
tain met ono of the soldiers of his command
about 8 years of ago, and charging him pith
misdemeanor in military duty, arrested him and
marched him to head-quarters at hie father's
house. Tho young recruit was taken by his
captain to a chamber, where with. considerable
ceremony the offending soldier was gagged,. had
his thumbs tied together, and was' lashed , up.
After several serious inflictions, the captain
stripped the person of his victim, and taking a
lighted lamp held it to his flesh until Iwo large
and deep sores wore burned.
The soldier was then dismissed and fled to hie
house. By threats ho was deterred from making
known the facts, and in a few days the captain
again arrested him, and gave biota severe whip
ping with a knotted rope. The facts afterwards
came out, and a complaint was entered by the
father against the captain, who was brought be•
fore Justice Draper, and obliged to pay costs of
court, and placed under bonds for good behavior
for six months, his father being surety.— Boston
