'The Fair grounds' were, npenedyisterilay to
,
n,embera of tbiSodety, Judges and the Viewing
taintaittees done. The great mass of this pub ,
110 *ere not,admitted yesterday but to-day, to
moriew, and the day following, it is anticipated
'that great numbers will visit the ground. • Tburs ,
day will probably be the clay of the odr—on
that day, for the first time'. persons who are not
members of the Society, are admitted, on the
payment of twenty-five cents.
Mechanics- Hall was thronged yesterday by
-crowds interested in the wonderfutdisplay there
presented. Our - manufacdurers, jadeng from
the exhibition in that llepartment, tave nwolte
frin their long sleep, and now seem to vie with
theMestenterprieing of their neighbors, in dis
playing theirwares,_goods, Bto. The exhibition
hall of stoves', billow 'ware; silver ware, glass
wire, Gallery, britannia,- elegantly finished vehi
cles, and miscellaneous articles of all kinds; and
:I 'lolol trees, was very large. Mechanic's' Hall
Was 'the centre of attraction yesterday ; fair
efiiq.'of the public, however, will be drawn to--
day to the floral Hall. This department was
not open yesterday.
The display of agricultural implements, late
, ;.dnientions and machinery is large, and many ad
...
"diccons will Set be made. All the littely impro
ved and invented agricultural implements are on
• the ground. .
•
^l/0 exhibition of grain house plants is very
large, and comprises many rare specimens. The
tent in whiat the plants.are placed, is tastefully
decorated.
The display of vegetables and fruits, though
not so extensive - aft -we anticipated, is very fine.
The variettes, , liiiedi both of vegetables and
fruits, Made 4:111 point of quality, what seem
ed to; be Smutting in number.
" Dail; Ball " was not fitted up for exhibi
tion yesterday,_ , lvt will to-day exhibit the bandi-

fancy embroidery, worsted work, `fauty,rter..!..! o
work, is an attractive' feature. Great skill—is
shown in the manufacture of many of the arti
cles .on exhibition.
The variety of poultry exhibited is astonish
jog. The extent of the contributions to this de
pariment, shows the increased interest felt in it
by the public. Every variety of poultry-dom is
represented, front the stalwart Shanghai to the
sandiest specimen of the Bantam tribe. In va
riety and number, we question if the exhibition
of poultry has even been equalled in the West.
The number and varieties of cattle, on the
grounds, is very large. In the department of
horses and mules, and sheep and swine, the ex
hibition- ie 'also good ; but we have no room to
particular;ze to-day.
LOOK cur ran TrIIIKVES.—We understand that
the ligltt,Atngered gentry are already at work
with some..success nt the Fair grounds. A mer
°haat,- we aro informed, lost a web of cotton
cloth on Monday night. We believe there should
be doublet he police force on the ground that are
yet employed. And the owners of goods will
not be sofa in depending on the police alone.
We would advise exhibitors of valuable arti
cles to have some one always on guard. It is
said our city is honored at . present by large ar
rivals of rog w that know a great deal more
than they c re about penitentiaries.
Store k epors and house keepers would do well
to keep a \ bright look out fur these " distinguish
ed strangers," and our watchmen should be con
tent with a short allowance of sleep.
titAIDE RIDDLE promises, if Councils vest in
him supreme power over the police, that he will.
in one or two weeks, rid the city of the low
breakers and ruffians, who nightly prowl the
streets. If his Itottor don't make a good officer,
it is not because he has not made enough pro
fessions. Every week or two, the " Mayor's
own Journal" contains an official manifesto,
patching up all the promises that have been
broken, and making a fresh supply to be cancel
led in the -future. Of course these documents
, are not intended to help the Mayor to a re-nom
.ination: Oh, no !
