The President's head qtiarters, and the edi tors' and reporters' tent, are near the entrance. There are about 2000 feet of sheds and stabling for live stock.. We understand that the entries up to this time are unexpectedly large; and the prospect of a largo gathering very favorable. We have received BO many presents of peaches that we have been unable to notice them all, as we perhaps ought to have done. Though particularly fond of that delicious fruit, we confess we have been supplied almost to sur felting with that luxury. We believe the county of Allegheny will yet be unsurpassed In the pro duction of good Peaches. The specimens ex hibited at our norricultural Fair, were of Schur actor to show that this region cannot be beat in that line, if our agriculturists and borticultu turista will give reasonable attention to the cul tivation of this excellent fruit. This has been a extraordinary year for the production of peach es ; and the market price has been consequently somewhat reduced. But, averaging the crops from year to year, the peach crop is probably one of the most profitable that can be culti yated. ATMS OF OM OiIfkATAT.V.: Col.. The Anneal Exhibition of the Nlonongshela Valley Agricultural and Horticultural Society will be held on the 1211 proximo. This society, recently organized, Is locat.X.d la the eastern end of our county, and is composed of the right kind of material With which to build up a permanent and useful organization. We observe, among other things, that a large number of committees have been appointed to award premiums, and that other arrangements have been made to get up a creditable display. The section of oonntry in which this society is located is among the beat in Western Prnnitylvania, and we see no reason, therefore, why our friends in the eastern end of our flourishing county should not get up as fine and as attractive exhibition as can be got op anywhere in the State.— Wash. Review. Some one entered the Presbyterian Church in Kittanning, one day last week, and stole some six or seven dollars from the missionary fund. The Pittsburgh Conference of the Methodist Protestant Church assembled in the borough of Washington on Tuesday last, and continued in session until Wednesday, when it adjourned. The attendance of Ministers and Lay Delegates was about 170. The Rev. Dr. Laishly presided. The Conference transacted a large amount of business relating to its branch of the Church. Good feeling and harmony prevailed. INUEIA [IASI'S COURSE AT SMTIINA.—We have already mention ed a rumor that the Russian, Prussian and Aus trian Ministers had filed in the State Department a protest against the conduct of Capt. Ingraham at Smyrna. The Nati9nal Inielligencer of yes terday states that a story is current in Washing • ton that the Ministers of England and France have also expressed to our Government, concur rently with those of the three other Powers, the dissent, protest, or whatever it was, of their re spective Governments relative to the !Costa affair. We can hardly believe that this latter rumor can be true. In referenceto the reported forthcoming letter of Secretary Marcy, on this subject, the In telffgencer remarks: .4 What the views of the Secretary of State are on this grave question we do not know ; but we cannot doubt but that they are such as Will be sustained by the rabic of public law or a just in terpretation of our own domestic law. The Postmaster General has decided that the half of a twelve cent stamp, frequently placed upon lettere for double postage, is not to be re glinted as payment. st&.• The Steamboat Inspectors or this dis trict have given the following decision in the case of George W. Elder, charged with a viola tion of role 4th, of Pilots regulations: The Inspectors, after a careful and patient in vestigation into the charge preferred against you by Thomas White, and by a careful exami nation of all the testimony produced, are of opinion that the charge Is Cully sustained—to wit: a violation of rule 4th of Pilots regulations, to an extent that did place Life in peril. The testimony in this case, as well as a very 1 large portion of the best pilots, whose opinions ; we have asked, goes to show that the crossing at Scuffietown bar in low water, Is an extremely narrow, crooked and difficult one, and ie such , a narrow channel as would fall entirely within the scope of rule 4tb, and though no .accident did occur by wale!' life was lost, yet theattempt to cross through such channel when another boat was already in, and partly through the same, with a boat of the size of the General Pike, and with a fiat boat in tow full of people, betrays an Inattention to the duties of your station as Pilot too hazardous to be overlooked. It is, therefore, ordered that the license grant ed you by the Inerpeotors for this district, to act as Pilot, be suspended for thirty days from the date of this notice. The Inspectors in making this decision do not intend to reflect on your professional skill se a Pilot, but only upon your want of observance of a rule so necessary to the safety of passengers on boats in narrow and difficult channels. The evidence in the case fully establishes the fact that after you got into the difficulty, all that could have been dune by a skillful and self pos sessed Pilot to avoid a collision, was done by you. The cause of your suepension is therefore found in your coming into this narrow channel, with the boat on whioh you was Pilot, at a time when occupied by a descending boat, as in this instance, greatly to the peril of life. —Louisville Deniorratic. PRIVATE CIIARAOTER OF A LOOO/10TIVE.—Peo• pie who may see a locomotive tearing up and down the land at the rate of forty miles an hoar, making the earth groan beneath its giant tread, sad the heavens themselves reverberate with its foprful clatter, scaring nature with its unearthly din, und frightening all creation almost from its propriety—people who only see it in its terrible activity, have no idea what eminently social vir tues It Is endowed with. This is its public char acter. Its private one is another affair. Now and then one of these huge monsters, in whose iron bowels slumber more than a thousand gi ants' power, comes up and stands under our window, and smokes away as gently as tho most exemplary cooking stove, its huge steam pipe singing a strain as soft and as dulcet as the most amiable tea kettle, and its lunge of steel breath 111 ing as sweetly as an infant in,its slumbers. But 'the demon of power is there. Let any one but pinch its ears, and no venerable spinster Cat will spit more fiercely; let him gripe those iron hands, and the pipes, which were tuned to a soft strain, send forth a yell as if heaven and earth were coming together; and those lungs, which breathed so quietly, cough like a volcano, and off it goes, darkening the heavens with its volume of smoke.—home Companion. TETE Aft:RDEBEII.9 DODOE."—John Morgan, the murderer of English Marshall, at Memphis, made his escape on the 9th, from tho officers into whose custody be had been remanded by the examining justices, by an ingenious stratagem.
