That post is the most arduous, and one of the most responsible diplomatic appointments under the Gorenuneat, the proper discharge of , its du ties requiring great Industry, and talent of high , order. In the selection of Mr. Sickles, the ad ministration have boos fortunate. A lawyer of skill and attainment in his profession, a politi cian of sound inflexible democratic principles, enjoying, too, in a rare degree the confidence of his party, he combines with these • the finest so cial qualities cad address of a gentleman. - If his acconglished lady accompanies him, the grace and loveliness of American ladies will hero in her a most isrilliemt representative. UOXI,ACE aannLicy. In the Tribune of the 29th ult., vo Dad the following assertion made by the eoltoonstltuted head and front of the Whig party : wad imprea upon We Prendent and hit Woe that no annesatton cart /Amid a country until the rith lands already inila pamafon =fully cuttisated." • Here in a sweeping and general assertion of a principle for which the old vhig party for for many years, but which they do not ge.nerally believe now. We had supposed that the history of this country for the last half cantury'had so utterly proved the folly of the assertion, that It would never bo announced again. But here It is in Horace Greeley's paper, uttered In lan guage as bold end unequivocal as it was a half century ago. And he claims to be the leader and bead of the whig party. Is he otill recog nised as such by the party? Wo ask for Infer- melon. Wo hope he is not. The well known character for intelligenco of the ablo but erratie editor of tho_ Tribune forbids ns the charitable wnolnalon that the above bold assertion was made in ignonince of our country's history. lint that the history of our country contradicts the assertion, and proves its ohms ' dity, all readers of history are fully aware. We will refer to but two instances. In 1891, Jefferson became President , Bona parte ruled in Prance ; and owned all the Lou isiana country of North America, comprising the present States of Louisiana, Arkansae, Mis souri and the Missouri and Oregon territories. Oar Western boundary was the Mississippi Ri ver, and the mouth of that river was under French contra England, all-powerful at sea, could wrest this wide domain from France.— ' Bonaparte, to avoid that loss, offered the whole ' territory to our government for $10,000,000. Jefferson end tho government clued with the offer, notwithstanding the fierce opposition of the whig partY of that day ; and thus a territory, ten times an large as Pennsylvania, was acquired for a sum which Is only about half the value of Allegheny county at the present time.: Onr ter• ritory was thus almost doubled; and stretched from the Atlantic to the Plaelfio ; and from the Mexican Gulf to the ice bound realm of the north: .the control of the Misalssippi In Its whole length became ours Ohms doubling the value to us of our thee Western country. In foot, the command of the ;whole North American conti nent was thus obtained for a trifling sum. Suppose Jefferson bad not bought this vast domain ; England would have taken and retain- . ed it by force : end in her hands it would have become a. great rival nation to ours : and the whole tide of immigration from her shares would have been poured and forced into that region, Instead of swelling our own population. Eng ! Land; Would then have owned the States of Lon -1 kelat!ei ,Atifensas, 'Missouri, and the Missouri I and , Oregon Territories ;—would have had cen tret of the Mexican Gulf, the Mississippi River, end"- the pacific Coast ; would hale forever ex cluded sisfista,Texas, New Mexico and Confer lois; 'and would • have stretched her proud and hostile—dominions north and west 'around us from thellulf . ,isf,,lpxico to the Gulf of St. Law ',ranee. % • 1 By this pardon, the control of the mouth of the Mississippi" river was acquired; and a free outlet to the ocean for the mighty valley of Ore West, with its rich and boundless plains, its 2.`2,01X1 miles of Steamboat navigation, was for !ever secured. Thus, the whale broad west was i opened far settlement and cultivation. lint for 1 that fortunate democratio bargain, the great val ley,- now covered with the bountiful harvest fields; its Waters traversed' by innumerable , steamers, and the shores of its rivers and him; ibore all studded with opulent eities—but for this purehase, this mighty valley might - have • remained to this day, comparatively a Wilder- Here vas annexation at a time when not ona halfof the "rich lands already in our posses , Bien were Bally cultivated." No nne*r doubts the propriety, and the immense value of that fortunate purchase and annexation to this coun try; except the self-constituted leader of whig party, and teaoher of the people, Horace Greeley: . And 'yet in viewof the incalculable benefits, well known and universally admitted, of this itmaniation,.Horace'SlreeleY wishe.s $.,, co imior*4sts the President and Ai: Cabinet Thstwo istne#sso4,4lftenifiirseaniiiiiitmlit the rich lande in iffy osseisfent irre jug y ,cultElaterl." ' "- Does anyqne - at this day believe such doctrine. Yet the great man of the Tribune has uttered it, and published it within ten days. Again : Within a few years California has I been acquired and annexed to our domain: . mlllions of acres of rioh lands :Arcady possessed ,yet remaining unCultivated. Does any one doubt ;.the: immense value of that acquisition to this ;Country.t It is annually pouring into our midst - some forty millione of Aollara in gold, to double .. our commerce v-tirintlld our railroads ; to stim ulate redoubled activity in every branch of busi ness ; to increase tlao rewards of, labor; and to make this crountry in a brief time the most weal -thy and prosperous (nation on earth. In view of this-fact, too, Mr. Greeley - would 44 insprees upon our Pres . ident and htu This Cabinet that can ieneh" - t a country until . the rich Joule already in iqpiltettion are fialittalivated." - iWas ever a sentiment uttered niore palpably absurd?
