What was this "chartered by the State of, Ten-

"The City Exchange Company , had no char

• Its proper functions, then, lie exclusively in
dealing in coal; but, catching the inspiration of

"Dye's Bank Mirror," of June, and also of July,
among its list of Tennessee Bolts, had quoted,
"City Exchange Company, Memphis, J. B. Em
erson, Cathie?, Chocks on John B. Dye's Bank
ing House; Cincinnati; Pste.:" It was quoted,
therefore, in the June number of his Director,
before any of the paper was put in circulation.
That, of causes!, was to give it character, when
ever it did appear and get intet.the hands of
those who might doubt it! • • -
We are sorry that 11r. Dye allowed. himself
to engage in this business. It will ruin the chit
ratter and credit of his Detector, which kept out
of Wild.tat schemes to impose rotten rage upon
a too confiding people, would have been a really
useful, as it has been a profitable work. Like
Smith,who bought °charter at Atalanta,Oeorgia,
and then took it to Illinois to grind out a batch
of irresponsible and rotten lance—or like some
others, nearer home, who used the counterfeit
Detector, the control of which they purchased
expressly to give character, by quotations, to
those villainous issues from 'Georgetown and
Washington—Mr. Dye must suffer the doubts,
and not unlikely the denunciations of communi
ty, so long as he is a party to this unwarranted
and illegal scheme to got good money of the la
boring class, and as long as he lends the pages
of his Back Mirror to bolster. it up. A Bank

The Whig party, with the Tribune at its head,
