England, for poet office purposes, is divided
into seven districts. Each district is plac m alled in
the superintendence of a Surveyor, to who
the post office employees in the district are su
bordinate. Letters posted in each district are
stamped in a peculiar colored composition. Thus
all ‘ postmasters in the western district stamp let
ters with a yellow colored composition; In the
midland district the color is blue; in the home
districtlt is brown; In the northers, red; in the
North Vales; green; and in the South Wales,
purple. Foreign mails now write at the gen

Sew canal at tie Falls.
We have been prompted 'time and again to i
speak of the canal at Louisville, but have 05
often
refrained, in the hope that ' something
would be done by the General Government to so
improve the navigation at the Falls,
to that
stop theN
largest class boats could reach this city from .
Orleans, instead of ' being compelled at
Portland. But the recent report of the offic
directed by the Government to survey the ers
pres
t canal at that point, with a view to its en-
laenrgement, hes initialled us that it is foolish for
our citizens longer to depend upon other than
their own-means for the improvement of the mt.. ,
vigation ttt that point. The report estimates
that it will require two million five hutuired
thousand dollars to enlarge and improve-th thare
present canal sufficient to float and• in pass e
to
addition l
gest class steamers. That, too,
the necessary interruption in the navigation,
while the work is going on.
We understand trivia is in contemplation to
build a canal by pri enterprise, on the In
diana side of the river. The State granted a
charter for that purpose some time ago, and has
t.ecently BO amended it as authorizes the stock
holders to sell at any time to the United States
Government. The large dividends that have,
been realized by the proprietOrs of the present
canal, Is en ample guarantee that a mush better
one will yield even better profits at less rates of
toll.
We hope, therefore, that those of our citizens
Who can afford to make investments blanch
works, will assist In tusking , this canal on the
Indiana side of the river If Congress, at ,
say future time, determines that this great high
way of commerce and travel be kept ova by the
