• We have a p ropositton to present to Pittsburgh.

road up to this place, and thence by the Hemp

might run along the surrey .track • of ,the . Con-

burgh.:obout 29, miles. - Along the
,tieer shore.
the distance would ,be probably 28 or 130 . miles
.to this place, making the distance to West New
tonless than 40 miles, We suppose this plan
would not please our citizens, as they think they
are near enough- to Pittsburgh, but it will do
well enough to talk about, whioh is about all that
is accomplished for about half the Railroads pro- I
posed - to be'built. -•-
.-."Wa are not sufficiently acquainted with the
Artie..through which , it is proposed to construct
thepounellsville Rtillroad, to say much on the
subject of the above proposition. Thismitch we
know, however, - that the ConriellB iUD road, is
in good bands, and they will take sitCh : action in
the premises as will result to the advantage of
the citizens of Pittsburgh, 118 well as the peOple
of the region of country between here and Cam
berland. Gen. L A ramEn, the enterprising Pre
sident, will manage the affairs of the Company,
we hove no doubt, to the entire Satisfaction of
those who are interested.
Pittsburgh and Ittnakeissilie Line of
nickels.
Wo are pleased to learnthat aitiovetnent is on
foot to bring about the establishment of a daily
line of Steam Packets between Pittsburgh and
Steubenville. We are of the opinion that the
project would pay well, and we aro certain that
it is greatly needed. The Steubenville Ilerald
advocates the measure with much earnestness.—
It gays : The getting up of a daily line of steam- ,
era between Steubenville and Pittsburgh, Is be
ginning to olainythe attention of the Pittsburgh
public, and is , also noticed in Wheeling in a
spirit which they not unfroquently manifest to
wards improvements up this way. We have sup
ported their packets liberally, and if the busi
ness interests of Steubenville and Pittsburgh re
quire a line of packets between the two cities,
we think we have a perfect right to establish it,
without enquiring whether or not it meets the
approbation of our. Wheeling neighbors. The
trade, if properly managed, would prove a pro
fitable one—about this steamboat men generally
, agree. One gentleman in this city has agreed
to take the fourth of a boat worth 'from $16,000
to $18,60. Can't others here and at Pittsburgh
be found who will invest a corresponding sum of
money ? It an effort were made, there would be
no difficulty about it. •
Pittsburgh, alayirriLle said Cincinnati
IlatlroatL
The project meets with great favor by the
people residing in the region of country through
which it is proposed the road shall peas. The
Marietta Republican says : "The people of
Morgan county had quite a respectable Railroad
meeting at McConnellsville, on last Friday.—
They are in for a road through that county, to
betuilt by the Pittsburgh, Maysville and Cin
cinnati Railroad Company. Cambridge, McCon
nellsville and Athens are points in this projected
Railroad."
The Guernsey Jefferson's°. published at Cam
bridge, Ohio, says : " Our folks are all agog
about the new road, and feel confident that the
necessary amount will be raised to the capital
stock. In a conversation with Mr. PEACOCK,
this, very eflictent.and gentlemanly President of
the 'road, we learn many of the benefits and
interests it will bo to our people. But one glance
over the line shows the superior merit and
practicability which it has over almost any other
road in the Union. It will be built"
Ixtraovratsur TYPE-23=21110.-Mr. John S.
Sergeant., of Cincinnati, makes the following '
-suggestions in the Gazette of that city :
The plan is simply this :—" Omit all the
.spattes - until the 'words of a line are in type,
and then carefully insert quadrats, three, four,
five m or hair spaces, as may be required to fill
out the line, and leave the correct width of space
between all the words and before the points, &o.
" This does away with the frequent and often
very hindersome visits to the space box, and al
,lows the compositor to follow more dlosely with
his stiok, the right hand greatly enhancing
-speed; it ensures, witlia moiety of care, proper
'spaces in the line, and enables the compositor
efficiently to detect errors, at this, the proper
time for their correction."-
We, are apprehensive that, upon trial, hir.
Sergeant's improvement would prove a great
stumbling block in the way of compositors. In
case of bad Copy, it would not only compel them
to cudgel their brains to find Oat the meaning of
the writer, but afterwards to waste their time in
arranging a line of incongruOns type. We axe
of opinion that most printers would rather fol
low the old system, and go to die space box as
often tid necessary, rather than be compelled to
study one line over twice. We think that the
.system of type-setting is "finished," and it
might be as well to let it remain where it is.
A LANDLORD WANTED.—The proprietors of
the Glen Hotel, recently erected on the Brad
docks:field Plank Road, four miles from the city,
wish to lease the establishment to some gentle
man who is competent to manage it to the satis
faction of the public. This is one of the pret
tiest locations in•the'ileinity of Pittsburgh ; and
in the hands of an experienced and gentlemanly
landlord, the house will undoubtedly do a good
btudness. Daring the summer months, hun
dreds of our citizens will daily patronise the

We learn from the Washington Examiner that
whilst Samuel Miller, constable of Hanciver
township, in company with Samuel I , imepoker,
was attempting to arrest airishman named:Ken
nedy, for alleged fraud, in the neighborhood of
Florence, he was assaulted .by six or seven of
Konnedy'e friends, whozucceeded in preventing
the arrest. Mr. Amspoker was knocked down,
by a severe blow 'in the face, with a large stone,
and then beaten. Had it not been for the timely
assistance of Mr. Miller, in all probability Am
spoker would hate been killed. The citizens of
Florence armed themselves with guns, repaired
to the place where the difficulty bad, occurred,
and after arresting a large number of Irishmen,
succeeded in identifying two of them as having
been guilty of the assault upon Miller and Am
spoker. They were committed by a magistrate
in Florence, and on the same evening were lod

Sterile Galan:orals.
For the flint year after the California gold was
discovered, the opinion and remark were quite
common that the country was ono of excessive
sterility, that could never be inhabited. In vain
was it urged in reply that vast herds of Cattle bad
been annually reared and slaughtered, there, for
the hidei; and that where this was done there
must be a productive *ten. But better.. Worms"
Lion now prevails; moil possibly even that 'may
be aided, by the following, which we cut from the
San Francisco Whig, of the 15th of March :
"We were yesterday shown a sample of wheat,
of the spring growth, from the Temeleo Ranch,
in Sonora, owned by Major Beck, formerly of
this city. One of these roots show thirty stocks
from a single grain of seed ; and though the crop
was sown in the last week of November it has
reached an
,average height of nineteen inches.—
The Major has - one of the most 'beautiful and
valuable grain-raising ranches in the State, com
prising about 1400 acres, 300 of which is now in
wheat and barley. The Sonora Valley Is a moat
delightful place, and its close proximity to our
market makes its lands very desirable for agri
cultural purposes."
But lest some equivocator should refuse to
receive this "single grain" of evidence as satis
factory of the productiveness and the rising
power of California, we subjoin, from the Sacra
mento State Journal the more diversified items
which follow :
"California, at last election, cast more votes
than nineteen of the States of the Union. The
censgs returns show that In horses she is in ad
vance of fifteen States; ,in mules of twenty-six ;
In cows, of twelve ; in work oxen, of eight ; in
sheep of four; and in swine, of three. The
value of her live stock exceeds that of twenty
two States. More barley and potatoes are raised
here than in an,yl3tate in the Union excepting
New York. In wheat, we surpass ten of .the
States; in oats, more than three-fourths; of In
dian corn, less than any . State in the Union; and
in been and hay partial returns place us ahead
of nine. In fruit we excel all the States in
variety and more than half in quantity.—
Who can . say that California is not some, after
this ?"

7 GERUAR EXIGRATION. -- IR Germany, according
to the very latest advices, there is a great de
mand for American eagles, on the part of those
intending to emigrate to the Unitedlitated, and
it appearl that the number likely to cross the
Atlantic) this year is greater thin ever- There
is reason, in fact, to believe that the movement
is limited only by the inability of the people to
meet the expense of their•passage, and by the
difficulties, especially in Austria, which are
threith in the way by Government, and which
are almost insurmountable: How long the safe
ty valve of emigration can be stopped by the

Arthur Spring—Attempted Suicide
We are infornied that this miserable wretch
refused, until Saturday last, to take food, with
the evident attempt to starve hlnashif to death.
On Tuesday he yielded to the cravings of hun
ger, and partook of ,a small amount of food
which was offered to him. It Is also etated that
ha hadyiseed tobacco beneath his arm-pits, for
the purpose of debilitating his person. Since
the day of his sentence, his demeanor has entirely
changed. lie no longer wears that six of indif
ference that so characterized his conduct during
the first and second trial. 'This change is the
more marked since the manacles were put upon
him, which is not always done in similar cases,
but which Is considered necessary in Ma. • Most
of the time he lies upon the bed or on the floor
'groaning, as if in great agony of mind. Ito is
•not visited by any of his friends, his shameless
lies having driven from him those who -from
their connection, felt some little sympathy for
him. His counsel, Mr. Doran, has not been to
sec him since his sentence, and has said that he
does not design to, unless sent for. With the
certainty that en ignominious death awaits him,
he has no living being to commiesersto him, not
even his own offspring.
Life no longer possesses any charms for him.

EXCESSIVE SHIPMENTS To AN6TEALIA.--PrillOeft
London Price Current of .the let Inst., by way of

vast numbers are embarking in the business. so
that immense quantities of merchandise, furni
