l'ennsylotmia Raffroad.--This great road runs
through the heart of our State, connoting Phil
alelphissAthe East with Pittsburgh in the West.
It is'nearktrantipleted, only a few !ales over the
Allegheny Ifeuntalus being unfinished, on which
as many worktnen are employed us can possibly
operate: The old Portage road will be need un
til the Company's work is completed. It is the
intention of the Pennsylvania Railroad Comps, •
ny, idtiniclioly, to have a double track between
Pittiburgli and Philadelphia, and we have no
doubt.but-that the business of the road will keep
them Unemployed.
Ohio and Pennsytcania Railroad Withina

Clettiond and Pittsburgh Railroad—This road
hat been completed for some time between
Cleveland and Wellsville, on the Ohio river. It
crosses the Ohio and Pennsylvania Railroad at
Alliance, by which means Pittsburgh and Cleve
land are directly connected, only about five hours
being necessary to make the run from city to
Allegheny Valley Railroad.—This important
work, intended to connect the City of Pittsburgh
with Buffalo, Rochester, and the entiralfate of
Now York, is now under contract. The'work is

The road will pass along the Allegheny Valley.
and secure to our city an inunenso lumber and
metal trade from the counties of Western and
North Western Pennsylvania.
iNttaburgh and Steubenville Railroad.—This
work is in good hands, and is progressing rapid

The whole will certainly be completed from river

Bteubenville and Indiana Railroad .— Although
a distinct -and independent Company, ibis may
be regarded as a continuation of the Pittsburgh

canal, in the fall The S. and I. R. R. runs from
Stenbenvllle to Cottimbus, Ohio, passing through
the rich counties of Jefferson, Harrison, Tascar

Philadelphia, through Pittsburgh, Ohio, Indiana
and IBinois, to St. Louis.

Cumberland; Md. - The President, Oen. iottuurn,
possesses all tbe energy necessary to insure the

Cloortiers Valley Railroad. —Thin road, running
from Pittsburgh to Washington, will unquestion

an abundance of money having beealitubscxibed

in Pittsburgh have taken hold of this project,
and it is bound to succeed. Tho road passes
along the rich valley of Chartiers creek, through
some of the finest coal fields in Western Penn

, Fashington, thereby securing for
our city a portion of the trade and travel around

On. Monday - f irenln g a coripleitifeing ladies
*ante our office, and inferviontiii that 'a young

•PtinGlil-Aniii nese, had died, after a lingering
illness, on n:crose Street, near Webster. - We
accompanied - theta to the dilapidated room in '
,
which the corpse of the young man was, and. it
was painful to witnees - the poignant grief of the
heart•stricken lather tied_ mother, as they wee&
over the death'rif 'an only .. eon. We returned to
the office, and informed acinte of the gentlemen
employed on die:Post of the facts. Their sym
pathy for an unfortunate brother PB3 at once
excited, and before twelve o'clock yesterday
iheyliid a sum c — ohtribuiedrroluntarily, suffi
cient to give comfort to the heque of the be
reaved and distressed parents, and to indicate,
at the some time, that pure charity Is the first
impulse of a printer's heart. We do not write
this to puff , them;, they require nothing of the
kind. But we note it to indicate the cheerful
manner in which they succor the destitute, and
alleviate the grief of the mourning parents..
The young man of whom we speak was un-
known to any of the printers of Pittsburgh.
But a knowledge of the departed was not a
question asked by. theni ; they were satisfied, he
was a printer, and their warm hearts opened
with - their wonted generosity, to provide the
means to render the last sad tribute to a fellow
craftsman, and to cheer the hearts of his dis
consolate parents. This sat of kindness is truly
creditable to the warm-hearted and generous
.rinters of Pittsburgh.

HON.'JAHICS BUCHANAN.
The appointment of this distinguished gentle
man as Minister to England, gives universal
satisfaction to the people. His 'high order of
talent, "great experience as a statesman end
diplomatist, mark him as one of the most distin
guished representatives our -country could have
in Europe, No man can doubt the earnestness
and ability with which' he -trill watch over the
Interests of his fellow citizens.
THE CAMPBELL TROUPE.
The publio will remember that this is the
first night of the series of Concerts this cele
brated Company propose to give in our city.—
There is not a man among them who is not
known to fame and highly appreciated by every
audience that have listened to their exquisite
performances. We expect that Masonic Hall
will be crowded to overflowing this evening to
listen to their sweet music.
RtDUCTION ov PRIOSS.—At a meeting of the
nail manufacturers of New York, held on the
.70, it was deemed advisable to reduce the price
of nails from six cents to five cents. This re.
duotion is partly owning to a reduction in the
price of iron, and the wish of the manufactures
to have a uniform price; throughout the year.—
They have, therefore, determined upon the cents
per pound as the desired rate.

More about the Copper alines.
The Boston Post says that it has been inform
ed by an intelligent correspondent, that be has
gone over the statistics of the copper mining
operations on Lakis Superior, with the following
results. Be finds that twenty-one mines upon
the Lake and the Ontonagoihave 22 . 4,000 shores,
which have cost by assessment $1,000,000 to the
proprietors. The present market value of the
whole stook of those twenty-one mines Is $3,-
860,000, while their combined product has al
ready been 10,400 tone, or $8,120,000 at the
price obtained for the metal. Copper is now
worth nearly or quite twice as much as it was
two or three years ago. The previous calcula
tion may seem unfounded to those who, because
oopper stocks were once the subject of a foolish
speculation, believe the copper region to be
worthless. But a little investigation will satisfy
the inquirer of the ostentation. Thus the Cliff
Mine, costing $lOB,OOO, would bring $9b0,000
at the present prices of stock rthe Minnesota,
costing $68,000, would bring $660,000; the
Copper Falls, costing $BO,OOO or $90,000, would
bring $650,000 ; while the stooks of the Nee
tional, Forest, Phoenix, Dana, Winthrop, North-
West, North-Western, Norwich, Toltee, and
many others far more In many instances than
has/actually been expended upon them.
Mamma FLUNECETIBM.--GREELrf relates
that when he arrived in London two years ago,
and had reached hia hetet he was looking out of
his window, when . a tnagoent carriage drove
up to a shop on the opposite side of the way.—
Powdered footmen and flunkeys adorned the box
and stand. This, thougbt he,is some grand per
sonage who, true to the infernal traditions of
Norman barbarism; finds his honor in the deg
radation and brutalization of his species, by
affixing on them the mark of degradation—pick
ing out the noblest looking &Bares of toil, and
dressing them up as prisoners of war once were,'
whose livery marked their loss of liberty. But
casting his eye on the ooaoh panels, what did he
behold t A painting of the Ameriean Eagle,
with a shield "round its neck, looking like a
chicken prematurely tied to a gridiron I It
was ;the coaoh of ABBOTT LATTILIXOS, our late
whig representative near the CMirt of Bt. James.

Gramm= r—Ationg the items of news that
I heve lately seen lecireannoniteing the faot, that
Samuel Swartwent, Esq., (who was collector of
the customs for the pert of New York, under
Gen. Jackson, and the announcement of whose
defalcation has afforded a theme for almost every
Whig writer during the last twenty years,) has
paid every Alollar:of• his indebtedness to the
United States;-end::.that there does not now
stand against him a single judgment for'. any
amount. While this {act is another among the
14tany proofs that have been offered to hie fellow
men of the almost infalliable judgment of An
drew Jackson, it will surely prove a rather mel
ancholy one to Wicig patriots, who have now noth
ing left for which to abuse the Demeoratio party.
Gen. Jackson, appointed Mr. Swartwout to of
fice against the advice of many of hie friends,
because he believed him to be an honest and ea
pable man ; and to. the lakt moment of his life
Ihe remained of that opinion. None brit an hon-
I
eat man would; in view of. all the abuse that has
been heaped upon him, hate met his liabilities
in so honorable a manner. May we not wonder
how many Corwins, and Crawford:, Galphins
end Gardiners will be influenced by the course
of Mr. Swartwout to go and do likewise.
You are of course aware that a very pleasant
little frolic is anticipated on the part of the Exe
cutive and Legislative branches of the Govern.
meats of Pennsylvania and Maryland on Satur
day next,—when both the Governors, and the
members of both the Legislatures, are to take a
tone of inspection of the public works of each,
that have a connection with each other. Spe
cial trains are to be provided in each State, by
the respective railroad companies, and no doubt
every necessary arrangement will be made for
the highest degree of enjoyment on the part-of
all Who shall participate in the festivities of the
occasion.
Speaking of Railroads, it may not be impro
per to allude to the growing interest that is felt
by the entire community,-east of the Allegbee
Dies, in our Western improvements. Every in
telligent man regards the system of railroad
communication that has been undertaken within
a few years past, (and which bat already very
considerably progressed,) as likely to produce
results in our country, which none can possibly
calculate
.at the present time, especially when
the effects of the wonderful addition of gold to
our Circulating medium are also considered. It '
is clearly seen that, already, the value of prop
erty has hew more than doubled In many Null-
Idea and as railroads, shall continue to give in
creased facilities to trade e open up new sources
of wealth, in regions now remote from a market;
and greatly stimulate production at almost every
point, the United States roust become, indepen
dently of every precauti, - eery measure that may
be adopted by other countries, emphatically the
gardeuand the workshop of the world.
Your readers well know, gentlemen, that the
time has been, when the editors of the Morning
Post stood almost alone among the citizens of
Pittsburgh, in contending for an immediate con::
nection with the great improvements in Ohio,
and, the completion of the Conneltsville railroad,
as works of the highest necessity to the inter
ests of our city, and our section of the State;
and all can see, now, that, bad the energies and
capital of our part of the State been then direct
ed in this manner, we should have occupied the
proud position of being ahead of all competitor,
for the great trade of the west and south west
of which others are tr . ) log to deprive us; and
which our position, and the ultimate tamer
gee we must possess, cannot fall eventually to
give us.
Our friend, Gen. Larimer (who is always ahead
in matters relating to the prosperity of Pitts
burgh,) long eince.declered it as his conviction,
that the more railroads there might be comma
! rdeatingwith our city, the better it would , be for
the interests of the eitiaens. I have long been
of the same opinion ; and, although I do not pre
tend to be as far-sighted, as every body in rela
tion to such matters, lam Billy satisfied, that,
If the people of our section of the State shall
simply confine themselves to doing, to the extent
of their ability, all that can bo done to promote
tee*. ors interests,—leaving all other people to
attend` whatever they shall deem for their ad
vantagvi—and *Wain from losing time and
wasting their energies in merely trying to defeat
other interests, (which has been done to a very
considerable extent,) there is no place in the
Union that can do anything to retard the con
stant rapid march of Pittsburgh to eminent
greatness. Those who know me well, know that,
everywhere, I have spoken of our city as marked
out by the Almighty Rand itself to be a place oe
immense business importance, and I have never
for a moment allowed myself to think, that any
eats of other places, or any attempts by those
interested elsewhere; could possibly affect Pitts
burgh interests in a materiel manner, or for a
great length of time. The mineral resources
immediately surrounding her together with the
healthfulness of our locality, have brought to
gether a community who aro not to be excelled
in industry and perseverance; and these, backed
by that intelligence incident to activity and use
ful employment, must place oar city above
every other place not eo well endowed by nature.
Let me ensure you, that sentiments snob as these
are uttered by every intelligent man with whom
I have met from other parts of the country ; and
that our city is held in high regard wherever her
oharaoter is known.
There is another subject to which I would ad
vert before Lolose. -That subject is one of very
<weeders* importance just now—especially in
tho City of-Washington and at the White Rowe.
Permit me, gentlemen to introduce to your.no
doe, and especial kind attentions, tiereant
O'Nssn, once a member of the body guard of
Brigadier General Paotatut Pence, upon the
battle fields of Mexico; then an honest day la
borer in the city of Boston; and now the gentle
' man to whom all,—the highest as well as the
lowest—direct their attention when they with to
have an interview' with his chief, who has been
elevated to the position of guardian of the inter
ests of more than twenty-five million free citi

have perilled his life. He faithfully and kindly
attended him through his confinement to his rent;
and remained constantly with him, until both
the volunteer General and the Sergeant! were
again restored to the ranks of the people. Gen.
Pierce returned to Concord to practice hit pro

est le the selection of the Foreign. Ministers,

Mr. Buchanan will be offered the mission to Eng

decline there will be a monstrous sight of hard
things said against him, by some of his ardent

An amusing anecdote la told of Mr. Marcy,

Mr. Soule, of Louisiana, has been nominated,
and confirmed by the Senate, as Minister to
Spain. Mr. Buchanan will go to London on' a
special mission, and Mr. Es-Secretary Walker
will be sent to Paris. If these two able and ex
perienced Statesmen cannot negotiate Cuba into
the Union, there will be no aso to longer try, by
peaceable means, to annex that Invaluable island.
I do not say that the selection of these distin
guished diplomatists is specially for the acquisi
tion of Cuba, but it looks very much like it—
The negotiation for the acquisition of Cobs most
be carried on at London, for not only Cuba, but
Spain herself, is under British surveillance. , The
people of Spain are deedly hostile to the ceding
of Cabs to any nation, and the government dare
not attempt such a thing. It would produce a
revolution, and cost the present ()men her throne,
unless the British, who pieced her there, would
come to het; assistance, which they certainly
would not do, were she to sell Cuba to the Uni
ted States without fleet aatisfying them.

New Tom—The New York Times relates the
circumstance of Mr. Henry l',. Ten Bibbei, of
Washington city, being bkNew York on the 24th

a young man who pretended he had been Intro
dared to him at Brown's hotel, in Washington,
accompanied him to funeral publie houses, and
finally to a house which proved to be a gambling
den, where tho young man proposed a game of
fun, to which Mr. Van Ribber demurred, , as he
had never played, but finally consented, and.was
soon Introduced to several of tho inmates. Afe
was called for and drunk, arid though Mr. T. B.
suddenly felt his head belan to swim, he con
tinued to play until he had lost $BOO. They
then accompanied him to the Metropolitan Hotel,
where all hands dined and drank freely of ohnm
parte, and in the afternoon Mr. Van 11. procur
ed en advance of $5OO on a check, returned to
the gambling den, and lost all. Being by this
time severely drUgged, he remembered nothing
until next day, when ho returned to Washing

demanded payment of $6OO on the 'Bank of
America," at the same time presenting a cheek
to that amount, which he had signed. Of the
act of signing, however, he bad no recollection,
and he refused to pay. One of the gamblers
then exposed the whole circumstance in a letter
to his wife. The insult prompted him' to rewro
te New York and prosecute the affair; and on
hie oath all the parties wore arrested and held
to ball in the sum of $1,600 each for trial.—
The case has already boob laid before the prod
