CUAIIIIIERBDVIta AND ALLEGUENT • This project, whichwe have already noticed in the columns of the 'Morning Post, is attracting considerable attention in the region of country through which it Is proposed the road shall pass. , The Bedford inquirer assures us that the road can be easily made, and that in a short time the proper measures will be taken to have it in ao teal course of construction. The Inquire re peats, that " some of the beat men In the eastern part of the State are at the head of the move ment, and are determined to push it ahead." Passing through Bedford, it will be of great benefit as a communication with the Mineral Springs from the cities of the East and the West It is stated that the Maryland Legisla ture has chartered a company to construct a railroad from Cumberland to the Pennsylvania State line, to connect with the new road from Cluimbersbnrg. The building of this branch will, give the road a connection with Wheeling over the Baltimore and Ohio 'Railroad. The Bedford Gazette says: "From the feeling , manifested by the citizens of Bedford county relative to this road, we and of opinion that a 'reiyAsege amount of stock will be taken by our , people. In fact ) we have no doubt of it. We have never before known the 7AIIIIUB of this locality to take so deep an Interest In any , public enterprise as they do in this." And again, the Gaulle says : "Bedford county is prepared to do her whole duig, and prove to the world that she possesses both the ability and the disposition to keep pace with the-spirit of the age in which we live. Many who have heretofore been greatly prejudiced against railroads, are now the warm- I est advocates *a the measure, and but one opinion seems to direct the wishes of our entire community, and that is a desire to see a road of this description pot under contract at the earliest posiiblo moment" The Harrisburg Uitgii; of a recent date, hap the following: - New RAILROAD Pitorxers.—ln this wonderful railroad age, new projects are springiag into ex istence, that never were, dreamed of. when the great through lines were along, that make easy grades, shorten distatife, and will increase the facilities of trade immensely. In the counties . of Nevada, Placer and Yobs, therninest population alone numbers 9,- 809. It is believed that not more than five-sixths of the entire population have seen enumerated, on account of the difficulties attending so com plicated and extensive an undertaking in a new and comparatively unknOwn country, the mixed, unsettled, and.finctuating character of the popu lation, the difficulty of thoroughly exploring the mountain. counties, hostile Indians infesting some portions of the State, and the supposition on the part of many that the census was in some man tier connected with taxation. But making no allowance for these causes, and looking to the actual returns, they show an increase in the pop ulation-in two years of 99,435 souls, an annual increase of 49,717, equal to thirty per centum. The estimated population exhibits an annual in crease of forty-three per cent —the increase in the population of the whole linion, according to the census of 1850, being three and a half per cent. a year. In live stock alone she surpasses twenty two of the States: and the capital invested amounts to $18,903,714. In horses, mules, and milch cows, a comparison with other States shows that California, at the present time, ex ceeds many States in the aggregate number. Afore than half as much barley is raised in the State, as is produced in the whole Union. One fifth of the potatoes raised in the Union, are produced in California. In oats, more is raised than in three-fourths of the other States, and in wheat she surpasses ten States. In fruits, Cal ifornia excels all the States in 'variety, and one half in the quantity produced. In regard to the mineral resources of the State, the interesting geological developments made by the recent census, place California far in advance of all her sisters in the variety and importance of her mineralogical resources. In reganthowever, to "heaven's last best gift to man," California stands far, far behind those States she leads so far in natural resources. In looking over the census reports, of some of the counties, we would feel amused, at the reported scarcity of the tender sea r leil feeling of pit/ did not•privinit Mi. .CaliforniaTeisettsts a great deal, but yet there itmrery much wanting. There le no nee in-the Democrats laughing at this name: it is one that will attract attention, and whenever it is fairly announced, the Whigs will laugh at it themselves. Some of the Whigs propose that, "for short," the name of the party should be designated by the following initials: D., B. W. P. We think the initials are preferable to the full terms, they. represent, for they are convertible, and their purpose may be changed to sat any occasion.; ; ;We ":hope , our fellow citizens of the Whig party will call a public meeting,;and let us know by what name we shalt call thenihereafter. The - old one is worn out; the new - one is hard to commit to memory, and even the initials will be hard to remember. We seriously desire a card• with the real name of the party upon it If de- - tdred we will publish it se a standing' advertise ment until the people can learn it by heart. NEW SILVER COINS.
