'wards, at various times, different government officers attempted to reach the head wators'of thU AM., but from the, insurmountable diffiofil. lieu to their way, every expedition failed of its diatved object. On uto 2d of May, 1852, Coil- Marcy left Fort Belknap, on the Brazos river,Lirt. Texas, for the purpose of penetrating to the sources of the river. Oct the 16th day of Taint, lie reached the sources of the north Wk. of the Red river, in latitude 86 deg. 14 min. north, tin longitude 101 deg. 61 min. r nd 6 sect: west tri m Greenwich. After hiving completed their exam-, ination of the north fork of Red river, .he patty turned south, and, after they had traveled thirty miles, reached the middle or salt fork of the fiv er, which they ascended to its source, and ag - tin' resumed the Booth course, and afteemarching fifty miles, arakved at the south, or, print:9lA branch. Capt. Marcy states that this brandi i 8 called by the Indians, the "Prairie Dog Town River," so named from the vast number of dngir found along its valley. Captain M. says that the party in, one place, near the head of bun river, passed for twenty•fore miles through a con. tinuous community of these quadrupedi. Sup posing its extent to have heel; the tfame in other directions, Capt. Marcy states that the town would occupy an area of 626 square miles] or 896,000 acres, with the barrows at the usual distances of about twenty yartis apart, and eZch containing a family of five or six dogs, therg gregate population would exceed that of soy city in the world. In giving an account o' the habits of the prairie dogs, the Captain states manyin- Wresting facts. . The- dogs, judging from ,the location of their towns, - requirenoother aqueous sustenance, than that which they receive from their food, which - is grafts. The, rattlesnake is often foundsith the doge, and has by some teen considered a welcome guest of the proprieto of dm establishment; but this is an error, as he preys upon the dog, and is undoubtedly regiatcl ed by him as an intruder. After leaving this interesting point, the country became impiarta ble to -wagons, and tie Captain, with a email es cort of mounted men, proceeded directly along the bed of the scram; after three days haid riding, with :he thermometer ranging from 102 to 110 deg. in the shade, and nothing baths most nauseating and bitter rater to drink during the time, they arrived at the source'of the Main branch of Red river, in latitude 54 deg. 12Min , and longitude 102, deg. 85 min., about 225 miles in a southeast direction from Santa Fe. The Captain having accomplished the object of his mission, describes io glowing language the scenery nt the head of the river. He says:— "Three miles fromthehend of the river, , we found that its bed, which, from its confluence with the Mississippi to this point, with ono ex ception, bad been sand, suddenly changed to rock, with the water, (which below here ,had been torpid and biter,) flbwing dearly `and rapidly over it—and, much to cur delight, it was cool, and entirely free from salts. This was an nnlooked for luxury, as we had every where before this found H exceedingly unpalata ble. The effect of this water upon us had been to produce sickness at the stomach, attended with leas of appetite, and F. raging and reverish thirst, which constantly impelled us to driu it, although it bad still r contrary effect from What we desired, increasing our thirst rather than allaying it. After intense suffering from drink ing this nauseating water, we indulged freely in the pure and delicious element as we ascended along the narrow deli through which the stream found its way; and rollowing up for two miles the tortuous course of the gorge, we reached a point where it became so much obstructed with huge piles of rocks that we were obliged to leave our horses, and clamber over the remainder of the distance on foot. The gigantic walls of sandstone, rising to the enormods height of eight hundred•feet, on each side, gradually closed in, until they-were only It few yards. apart, and at last united above us, leaving a tong, narrow -corridor beneath, at the base of which the head spring of the principal branch of Red river takes its rise. This spring bursts from its cavernous reservoir, and, leaping down over the huge masses of rocks below, com mences its long journey-to unite with other tau . - tariea in the noblest river in the tiniverse. l On beholding this little rivulet, as it winds it thrtu- OUB course down the steep descent of the canon, it la difficult to realize that lt forms the nucleus to the largest and most important river in Ameri ca, floating steamers upon its bosom for nearly two thousand miles, and depositing an alluvium along its borders which renders i.e valley per , haps the most fertile in the world. We drank copious draughts of the total and refreshing water in the spring, and therebs con sidered ourselves, with the pleasure derived from the beautiful and majestic scenery around us, remunerated for all our fatigue and priva tions. The magnificence of the views that pre vented themselves to our eyes as we approached the head of the river, exceeded anything I bad ever beheld. It is impossible for me to describe the sensations of intense pleasure I experienced MI gazed on these grand and - novel displays of nature. The stupendous escarpments of the solid rook, rising to such a height as to exclude the rays of the sue for a great portion of the day, were worn away, by the lapse of time and the notion iaf water and the weather, into the most tautly! , tic forms, Which it required but little effort of the imagination to convert into works of art; all united in forming one of the most sublime and picturesque scenes that can be imagined, and we all, with one accord, stopped and gazed with wonder and admiration upon a panorama which ,was now for the first time exhibited to the eyes iof civilized man. !, All here wore the aspect of nature as itiaprang 'into existence—actors in its unrechiimed sub- Ilimity and wildness—and it inspired me with that ?veneration which one is apt to feel in contem -4414601e beauty, and grandeur of the undis iturbed creations of the Sovereign Architect, !stamped, apparently, as with hie own eternity." Prom the bead of this branch of the river, Capt. Marcy returned to the main body of his command, and from the point they had occupied, traveled down between the two south branches, reaching Fort Arbuckle, in the- Chickasaw Na tion, on the 80th day of July, where they first beard the t-eport so generally circulated of the massadre of the party by the Comanches. On another occasion - we may advert '6 the de , scription given by Capt. Marcy, of the habits of the "Prairie Indians." As iiionusirr Floome.—The Mecklinburg Jef fersonian says: "Like one of those wondrous rocking stones reared by the Druids, wbici the finger of a child might vibrate to the centre, yet the might of an army could not move from its place, Or Constitution is so nicely balanced that it seems to stray With every breath of opinion; yet so firmly rooted in the hearts and affections of the people, that the wildest storms of :reason and fanaticism break over it in vain." I have seen an account recently, lupus of the Icily dailies, of al great, discovery in the art of ship building - ,—whioliis nothing more or less than pitting togetherlarge ships without the nee of timbers!. Snob on invention as this, even in oar "wooden ,country," would, if practical, lead to very great results, The invention is called, the "Patent Imnreved Diagonal Privet pie;" and its great peculiarity - lies in the con strttotion of ships in the manner stated. It is said that three thicket:less of planks are laid in the manner indicated in - the patent; but bow they are fastened together, curved, &0., is not explained. The ' :patent is. by Messrs. White, ship builders at Cowes, England, who bare re cently launched a ship built scoordihg to their FIP4I - is an article of some moment - in the London Times of the 281.b,February, in relation to the position of Great Britain and the other powers of Europe with reference to political exiles—more pa'rticularly Kossuth and Mazzini. It would seem, from this article, that there are rumors, in high political circles, of an intended demand open England, by Ansa la, for the de ling of gossuthjnto the hands of the -Austrian authorities; and the Times says that the de mand, whenever made, will meet with a positive and unequivocal negative: that, in this event, both France and Prussia are to back the request of the Austtian tyrant; and, in ease of a con tinued refusal, nil the representatives of these governments.= to be at once withdrawn from, Eogirtnd, which the Times ezys it supposes will be regarded by them as an entire abandonnient of the sea girt isle to the winds and waves of a merciless fate. But such a Butte of things would seem to he looked upon as not at all deplorable. "Let them withdraw their ministers, if they like," is the virtual language of the Times:—"This co u n t r y ii the asylum of oationr and it will defend that asylum to 'the hvat ounce of its treasure, and the last drop of its blood." it reminds the read er that Charles X. was once obliged to return 1 to Holyrood, and Louis Phillipe, to the Thames that, although amon'apoliticianevatitucle le to be expected only for favors to be received, yet it would be well for seine now at the head of the govern ments mentioned to recollect that England has been as mach the asylum of royal fogitives, who here sought protection there from the fury of 1 an excited populace, as it boa been of the mad but ambitious leader of the people, who bad fled from the persecution of a tyrant: and that, there fore, Louis Napoleon may yet be Obliged to re- torn to his house in King street; while his new house in Carlton terrace may afford a safe re fuge to the King of Prussia, and a more numer ous band of royal favorites than now surround him at Berlin. The Times also gives some very wholesome advice to the would-be despots who hint at dictation to Eagland. It saya:!—"lf Austria, Prussia and France wish to disarm the refugees, let them restore confidence at home;" and, recurring to the position of Kossuth and Martini, and the right which every man enjoys under that government, to speak and print what ever he may see fit, and the entire freedom of all on this point, the Times, speaking for the Government, rays:—"We shall allow men to say what they please, so long as they do not pro pose actual Inituflon." This is a point to which no one cen be permitted to go; and, short of this point, no one can be required to stop. Refer ring to the proclamations of Kossuth and Mar :jai, which it characterises as fanatical and ut terly inpracticable,—lt says, "A really good government can afford not to mind them." The article to which I have - than called your attention, and of which I have given a very brief synopsis, is truly able and dig, nified; and yet there is a enttiog irony add a -tone of deep de fiance in it, which show that, whatever may be the real basis of - the remora spoken of, England is ready to defend herself against all the tyrants of the world. The time may come, when she trill be compelled to do ao; and when that day comes, "the mother country" will not stapd alone.— Another asylum of liberty will then be in danger. Yours, truly, .L, E.
