We learn from a friend in Steubenville, who
was a delegate, that the Railroad Convention At
Wellsville, Ohio, on Wednesday, was rather an
exciting affair. The obje3t of the Convention
was to determine whether thi River Railroad, or
4, Circumbendibtu3," should be made on the Ohio
or Virginia side of the river.. Delegates were
in attendance from Steubenville, Wheeling, and
several other important points, and ttlong, ear
nest and exciting debate took place, in which
the Steubenville and Wheeling orators figured.
extensively. The Wheeling folks, although they
Atelt'aut extraordinary inducements, were sig
n** defeated, And went home in any thing but
a gi)ad humor.
After hearing both sides - of the queition, the
Directors of the Cleveland' and Pittsburgh Rail
road antitillatusly agreed, and passed resolutions
to the effect, that it was practicaldi to construct
the River Rallioad on the Ohio side of the River,
and impracticable to construct it on the Virginia
aide. So that puts the question at rest
As soon as the sum of $400,000 is subscribed,
and the right of way obtained, this branch of the
Cleveland and Pittsburgh jtailroad, from Wells=
.
vile to Bridgeport, will be put under contract.
We learn that about $360,000 is already sub
scribed, and the balance 4311 be forthcoming In
a abort time. We believe the right of way has
dim been obtained ; eo that there is avofty pros
, pect of the "Circurabendihns" being put under
contract during the , coming summer.

7: - We find .the above publication in the
Wheeling Intelligencer, of the 24th, and we lay
it before the readers of the Port, not because we
have been requested to do so, but simply for the
purpose of making a few remarki relatir to the
travel on the Pennsylvania Railroad.. • • •
We.do not wish to disguise the fast, that there
is gross mismanagement on the line of Railroad
between Pittsbugh and Philadelphia. We have
wituessed.it ourselves on. more than one occa•
Ilion, and we are therefore unwilling to suppress
the tiuth in relation to the matter. We have
frequently been compelled to stay over night at
the Mountain House, in consequence of "mis
sing the connection ;" but we have never been
the loser thereby, as Mr. Lula, the gentleman
liproprietor, always provided - well for,_our coin,
fort, and made us feel perfutly t , at home:"
Bat to travelers who wish to rusk through In
nineteen hours from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia,
without sleep or rest on the road, it is any thing
but pleasant to be detained against their will--
Snob detentions. may be to their serious incon
senlence and injtiri, as in cue they should have
a note to pay, or the like.
So far to our knowledge extends the Pennsyl
vanis rallroaicompany is not the party in fault.
Unless unavoidable accident should prevent, the
care of that company are always up to time. The
delsys which cause all the trouble, and glee rise
to all the complaint, are on that portion of the
rtillroad owned by the State, and controlled by
its agents. Through gross mismanagement and
reckless carelessness, the Pottage railroad has
become a terror to travelers. Neither life nor
property insole in passing over it.
This source of complaint, however, will soon
be at an end, es the work on the Mountain divi
sion of the Pennsylvania railroad is rapidly
drawing to a close. The main tunnel through
the summit of the mountain is now approaching
completion, and the rails are being laid along
the new track as fast as it can be graded. When
this work is completed over the mountain/ L ye
can say with much confidence that for speed,
comfort and safety, the Pentusylvanis railroad
will be unsurpassed by any other road in the
country.
