Just as well might, it be con tended that , some of those who have had fat jobs under Government, and who have thus secured their hundreds of thousands, were among the ablest financiers of the country,—white others, having far more limited means, have manifested teatimes as much talent. At all events,it sounds very strangely to my ears, to hear those who -call themselves - Democrats; contending for the continuance of men in office, who have never done anything for , the party, becalm they have been long in office, and are very capable, men. The Whig party Cau furnish us with plenty of capable men to fill all the offices, for that mat ter : and we would much better to have in office those who are known to oppose our principles, rather than pretended, or milk and water Mends. I have before adverted to the great and themes. ing prosperity of this city; ,and it may not be amiss to say that the surrounding territory, for many miles, In both Virginia and Maryland, is rapidly improving. The:old, worn out, barren field, that a few yeartannajfkirted the District on every side, begin now to &intent the appear ance of high cultivation; and the large quanti ties of fruit and vegetables thatfill the markets here 'attest that great improvement:bee been made. But there is still great room for further improvement; and the way and the means of accomplishing it are at hand. You must know, then, that a very considerable number of Wes tern New Yorkers and New Englanders, have purchased farms in eastern Virginia, and in Maryland, within a few years past; and being greatly pleased with the salubrity of the climate (especially as compared -with the latitude they had left,) and the great ease with which - an ha rm:moment of the land has been effected, they have encouraged and are encouraging their friends toCome to this, vicinity and settle, attend to the Cultivation of-vegetables, fruit:B;le., for the markets, and thus in a few years realize aa much as they might do where they are In a life time. All parts of the country now regard the annoying question of Slavery as settled, by the compromise measures; and this fact Is every day making tighter and tighter the bonds of our glorious Union; and is exciting a more generous flow of feeling than ever could be brought into existence, while the demon Spirit of sectionality is pertrdtted Co walk abroad in our land. The fact is, there are marked differences be tween the people of the different-sections of our country; and, although I tutvarnarked those pe culiarities from the Merrimicit to the Missouri, and down to the White .river, in Arkansas, and cannot therefore, fully endorse the statement ads a few evenings since by some New Yorkers, respecting the people of Virginia and Maryland; yet there is much of truth in what they said. I shaUmot repeat what they said of the people of their own section; but they said of the Virgin ians, wherever they had been In that State,— that they were the most hospitable and genet.- oueminded people in the world. The fact is, there are many reasons why the people of the Southern States should manifest more of a so cial and hospitable spirit than, those of the Northern. The same reasons apply with equal force to the people of the West. On the one hand a hard, rook-bound coast, a sterile soll, and a cold and harsh atmosphere, where constant toil, and the exercises of strict economy, are in dispensable; on the ether hand, either a soil that yields almost spontaneously all that Is required fair the use of man, or the existence of other air ininstances, place 'the Southern and Western man in a condition where he can enjoy more of relaxation from toil; and, consequently, he can more easily attend to the rites of hospitality and sociality. But, happily, warm and kind hearts are every where to be found; and neither the chilly blasts of the North, nor the constant toil of poverty, nor the cares, and vexations, and sorrows incident to human life, can entirely eradicate the noble and generous traits of hu manity in many individual oases, and therefore I find it a difficult matter to decide in what put of our country I would prefer to locate, If I sought only to find warm and constant friend ship, noble and- self sacrificing philanthropy, frank and unpretending hospitality, or exalted and unwavering patriotism. All these, I think are generated under our institutions; and cannot, therefore be confined to a state or a section of our Union. Yours, truly, L. The editor of the Knickerbocker hue discover ed another "new pack," one Albert White, M. D., from whose volume of 264 pages he makes very copy-us extracts. During the year 1852 there were 8764 persons arrested for intoxication, 6972 for being intoxicated and dls ord'erly, 4984 for assault and battery, 1218 for assault and interfering with policemen, $298 for petit larceny, and 6014 for vagrancy. Daring the same period the 'Leiters of the association for relieving the condition of the poor relieved 8890 families. The city Inspector reports that during the year deaths occurred in the city, of which 19,114 were by disease, and 2,487 by other causes. The total for the yew is 428.1ess.than the previous year; but it is to be observed that the deaths by disease were 644 more in 1852 than in 1861. The increased fatality of cancer was, during the year, forty per cent., and of eoarlet fever from the years of 1849 and '6O to '6l and '62, is 116 per cent. The law relating to the registration of births, marriages and deaths is almost totally disregarded. Among the causes of disease, the inspector notices underground moisture, bone and flesh-boiling nuisances, slaughter houses, filthy streets, and, above all, spurious milk; with regard to which latter arti cle, be urges the enforcement of the most strin gent regulations.— U. S. Gas. C The annual report of the trustees of the Philadelphia Gas Works abound. In curious de. talls. iii 1836, for example, the applications for gas to the city amounted in all to 801, while the total number of consumers was 277. The total number of private lights was 167,170, and of public 1,818. Du ring the year 1852, the feet of gas consumed at private houses was 166,104,800. In public lamps 88,806,250. In Southwark 5,560,500. Moyamensing 2,800,500—t0tal 203,272,050. The total length of mains in the streets in lineal feet is 604,166. In 1836 the quantity of gas made at the works was 6,481,800. In 1850 the quan ty was 216,000 feet. West Philadelphia, in 1852 consumed 864,000 feet. Tag Istria Tikanr.—One of the moat admira ble traits of the Irish character is the fins vein of true golden affection that rune through it. It is a perpetual thing to find in the newspapers, accounts of how poor starving women, who have come from the old sod, and from day wages, have saved enough to bring over either an infirm fath er, a desolate and starving mother, or a mother whose life- was an eternal toil, with hardly a subsistence. These are noble traits of character and may be found everywhere among the Irish peasantry. We see that even so far off as Aus tralia, what is so common in this country, is noted. An Irish paper states that at the Lim erick poet doe, letters are continually received enclosing from $5O to $5OO, sent by poor emi grants to thhir poorer kin, to help them onviard from the debolate home of their birth to those far-off golden fields.—Mobile Tribune. litta,.
