as the Rev. C. H. Kelly, of the M. E. Church, in
Clark county, Mo., was concluding the morning
service, a man rushed up into the pulpit, with a
pistol in hand, and seised him, charged him with
stealing a horse, and notwithstanding the re
monstrances of those present, his hands were
tied, and his legs chained. In this condition he
was placed on a horse, and taken to the State of
lowa, where a man named Chas. H. Kelly, had
escaped from the penitentiary. The keeper,
however, immediately pronounced him not to be
the man, as ho bore no resemblance to him what
ever, when he was instantly discharged. The
man who seized him thus summarily, pretended
to be the Marshal of Missouri.

The bill to provide moans for the present wants
of tho New York canals, and to raise the same
to a capacity of one hundred and fifty tone,
passed the Assembly of that State, on Friday,
by a voto of eighty-one to twenty-eight, after
being amended so oa to levy tolls upon railroads.
The whole amount to be raised, $1,600,000, of
which a part-is to be raised by a tax of seven
tenths of a mill upon all the property of the
State ; the remainder by the special imposition
of tolls on railroads. The law is the alterna
tive forced upon the Rouse by the rejection of
the propositions to tax the aggregate earnings
of banks and railroads. It is eaid it will pass
the Senate.

charged with inducing two colored men to ac
company him to the United States, and sell them

brother alleged, and that the last seen of the
slaves was at thii time of their departure from
Canada for Buffalo. The affair has created much
