Thus may irever be. Ilesterday visited, for the eeoond time, the Fair of the Metropolitan Institute, which is to be closed -this weelt; and i assure you that no ono can visit this truly useful, beautiful and val uable collection of machinery, manufactures, the nrts, &.3.1tc., -- wlthout feeling proud of Sis coun try and Ida countryman; and - pnaylng for the eternal duration of tho political system under . which we live. In visiting the apartment in which the ma chinery is kept, I Was led to. examine several now pieces of methantenn;sdraili 'of which I re gard as highly - valuable. One of these, being a Pennsylvania production, is worthy of menial tiotlei; 'and tfind that our State isfally repre sented at the Fair, as well as at the several De partments, in applications for office. The ma chine to which I allude, tea patent "Fan Blow er," for the use of foundries, Rolling Mills, • .Bieamboats, &c., and for the purpose of Ventila ilep..lThis Blower is a subject of , great interest Kttbhs`•Fair, because of its extreme simplicity, compactness and wonderful pewer. It lathe In vention of Capt. Merman ALDILN, of Philadel phia; who, after a long time of trial; and en during,as much of unjust and nngenerons oppo sition as seldom, falls to the lot of any inventor, hosat length reached* point from whielibe can Contemplate the entire success of all his efforts; ahandsome independence in his old age ; and the almost universal adoption of his invention, wherever a powerful and steady blast is necessa ry to be maintained: the power of this Blower being regarded at more than fifty percent. above that of any other now in use. Another most beautiful and truly valuable new invention that I examined with some care, is a Rand Loom, which has very lately been patented by 8.-0. Mendenhall, of Rich-, mond, Indiana. This loom is constructed, as are almost all other really meritorious Inven tions, in the most simple manner. ~ It is light, and very neat in Its appearance ; and mey be •aaily worked by a child of ten years old. It is worked without cams or gear-wheels: the ells are raised and the shuttle thrown at each move ment of the heap.; and in less than live minutes a change can be made on the same warp from a twill to plain goods—from sattinet to flannel, or from either of these to any other goods that are woven on a common loom. This invention is peculiarly adapted to the newer settlements of our country, 'where manufactories have not been started ; and if extensively introduced may re tard the advance of manufacturing establish ments, (which I should look upon on a great blessing,) because of the cheapness of the ma- chine, the ease with which it may be worked, and the inereased amount of cloth that may be made in a given time: for lam told that midis loom one man may weave thirty yards a day of any common cloth. I Slid that there is great interest' felt it ;this exhibition; and persons from every part or our country are enlisted in its favor. Such Oolleo dims of goods, &0., are quite common In most of the States; but they are novel here, and thereforiiiudepen4ently of the strangers in the cif)", i,hepopulation have become impressed with the desire to haie an annual exhibition of a aimilar kind. This, I Ablnk, will be done, unless *hose -who have had the management of this Fair, shall act in ouch a manner as to deter per eons at a distance from coming here,--owing to the high-prices` ot Warding ;- and a course of "alloy by the managers aiming , more at the pe- Cuniary resources of the Institute, than the regu lar advancement of a great cause. ' Yours, truly, far There is a good story told of old Mooraj, the native East India general. Parties desiring suith incorporations; Abeircapital stock may in sash case be half . a million of dollars. • Thus you will perceive, gentlemen, under the provisions - of the , proposed: bill, these corpora 'dons of very large capital, creatable at the will ,of parties, by conforming to certain prescribed conditions, may become _quite extensive dealers in real estate. Why the field of individual en terprise and responsibility should be thus inva ded, if not usurped, I am entirely unable to per- Ceive. I know of no pretext that has hitherto been urged in behalf of incorporated companies that will apply to corporations such as this bill would in fact bring into existence. The busi ness of-buying and selling- real estate .is one .purely of _a 'private character, conducted for gain, and entirely within the ready compass of individual means. The whole pol icy of our law has been to remove restrictions . upon the alienation of landed propeitY. Our rules of deicent, provisions for barring entail ments,, and other . deviations from the restrictive policy of the country, whence we derived our laws on dile subject, have made the transmission and sale of real estate almost as ready and easy as the transfer of personal property. Oar en tire population may without difficulty engate this business. A largo associated means are required for the purpose, no extraordinary risk attends its accom plishment.. Whence, then, the necessity of Crest-. itig artificial bodies, ..with large means, but still limitetiespittutibility, for such parposes. If we take this step, have we not then gone to the out er verge in the business of creating corporate bodies? And can anyreason then be urged why the business of buying and selling ordinary wares and merohandize should not be contracted by these creations of the law? I have already assented to the idea, that to engage in certain kinds of private enterprise there may be necessary for its accomplishment so great an amount of capital that its associa tion for there purposes, under a proper legal or ganization, carefully restrained, and with the re sponsibility. so as to protect the community from all loss may be allowable. Bat the ordinary business or,buyin g and selling real estate is mot of this character, and I feel constrained, there. fore, to dissent from the provisions of this bill. A necessity may exist for some, legislation to enable these association to perfect the original purpose of - their creation, and to this end, there might be no objections; but the provisions of the present hill go much farther, and propose pow ers not necessary for the attainmentof suchpur poses. Was. Mates. -Executive Department, Feb 28, 1848. Sentence of the New York Alderman for Contempt...;Alderman Sturtevant Bent to Prison. On Saturday, the twenty-seven aldermen and assistant aldermen, of New York city, convicted of contempt In disregarding the injunction of court, In the matter of the Broadway Railroad grant, appeared before the Superior Court in that city to receive eVnteoce. The court room woe crowded with spectators. The New York Express says: - Judge Duet gave an opinion at much length, in which he reviewed the various circumstances, considered that the members wilfully violated the injunction, and that tt was a orimitud con- tempt. In relation to the resolutions offered by Alderman Sturtevant, denying the authority of the court,"and'imputing leterested and.eotrupt motives to the Judge, the court considered them ns -highly offensive, and Injurious to thireause of pubilo justice, and deserving of soveyn pun- iehment The only member of the board of al dermen, among all, that voted for the resolution, who offered any excuse to his answer, was alder man Smith. Alderman Doherty voted for the grant contre-y to the injunction, but did not vote for the resolutions. The judgment of the Court, Jadto D. said, is . that Ald. Sturtevant, who was the author of the resolutions, be sentenced tkitoprisonment in the City Prison for fifteen daytirpay for the benefit of the City 'Tresesty a fine of $250, and $101,60 counsel fees and costs;. and that each of the other Aldermen who violated the Injunction, except Aldermen Smith and Doherty, pay a fine of $250 each, and $101,60 for counsel fees; and Alder men• Smith and Doherty, with each of the Assis tant Aldermen under attachment (none of whom voted for the resolution', but laid them upon the table,) a duo each of $lOO, and in each case $101,60 counsel fees and coats, and the whole to be imprisoned until the fine Is paid. A demonstration of applause was niscle'doring the sentence, but suppressed. Judge Emmet then stated that ho coincided with the views of his Honor, Judge Daer, as to the nature of the offence, bat thought that alt the Aldermen who voted for the resolutions of Alderman Sturtevant should be imprisoned. Alderman S., who is the coneootor of the resolutions, and being a mem ber of the bar, should have known better. Ho would imprison him for 20 days, the other Alder men 10 days each, Smith 6 days, and would let off Alderman Doherty, who had decency enough not to vote for the resolutions. - Mr. °Toner then gave notice of appeal, which was allowed from tho special term to the general term, which immediately sat, thenco to Court of Appeals. Mr. Busteed, for Alderman Smith, said he did not intend to appeal. NOT &MAID OP TUE CONEEQEBECE9.—The Kingston (C. W.)
