PITTSBWRGIE:
THE XXXIII CONGRESS.
• .. For the Dforning Foot.
THE BEW CABINET.
poses.
The Cabinet, composed'of men of intellect of
the brightest order, tried in theirpatrietiem, and
with a unity in principle, will not diminish the
reputation the Democratic party have acquired
for good government. We will again bare the
days of Jackson and Polk, tho country respected
abroad, and thO people happy at their firesides.
The Inaugural Address is a text-book, and there
will be no shrinking from the position taken.
Comparisons are odious, but before the whige
abuse the present Cabinet and their actions in
future, let them recur to past scenes in the his
tory of this country. We do not agree with
those who say that Taylor and Fillmore'e term
has past, and therefore let their deeds be passed
by. Their administration is now a matter of
history ; the actions of the two Cabinets are
open to question, and always will he. They
wore public servants, and their administration of
the affairs should have the mete of praise or
censure as it deserves. Then, before the whlgs
talk of all the evils that may betel us under
Pierce's administration, let thein think of what
has transpired within this last four years. What
will the present Cabinet do—better tell what they
will not do. We ask those who have raised their
voices against President Pierce and his Cabinet,
a few questions, which easily can be answered.
Will not the Cabinet which has just commen
ced the discharge of their duties, be respected
abroadt---r-Will not the country occupya better
position among other nations than it has done
during the last four years oar diplo
matic coips be looked upon es non-entities or
grovelling sycophants ?—Will the country be
degraded in the eyes of Europe by such toady
ism as displayed by Ingersoll t—Will weak
Spain be permitted with impunity to give re
peated insults I . —Will the present Cabinet ad
vise a proclamation calling their fellow-citlzens
pirates and freebooters, and giving them up to
the tender mercy of the Spaniards'—Will we
again see fifty Americans shot In cold blood with
out a trial ?----Will we again eabmit to such in
dignities as were meekly borne in the elute of
the steamers Ohio, Falcon, El Dorado and Cres
cent City ?—Will we have a repetition of the
Galphin swindle and the Gardiner fraud 2
Will we see the inhabitants of New Mexico again
pieced under martial law?---Will we see the
private correspondence of a preceding adminis
tration shown to the world we see an
other war with the Florida Indians arise from
the inaction and ignorance of those in power?
—will we see a nomination to the Supreme
Court nude and withdrawn—and as a finale •
renewal of the Capitol frauds?
Until such scenes recur, let the whip keep
silent. Let them reflect upon tho wards of the
Louisiana Senator—a sentiment in which even
the most short-sighted must concur—" That the
policy of the administration, where our interests
came in ednflict with those of a foreign power,
has been peculiarly unwise and undignified."
But the Want of ability to fill properly their
stations, is proved by a reference to the Clayton
Master treaty and other instances. Their
want of honesty, at least among a portion of the
last Cabinet, by reference to the connection of
Corwin with the Gardiner claim, and also by the
conduct of. Stuart in trafficking In the patronage
of his department lately exposed by the Whigs
themselvis in the House.
Let the account thus stand and see what will
transpire during the present administration that
may be accounted a set-off to some part of this
catalogue of mismangement The administration
of Pierce will be a bright page in our country's
history, and his name in after timo be ?teed
with Jefferson, Jackson and Polk.

Our business men should remember that the
Stock Books for this Important Road will be
opened on next Monday. In speaking of It, the
Washington Reporter says : " Every thing will
depend upon the action of Pittsburgh. Should
her business men lend a hand, the work will go
forward steadily and rapidly; but if not—if
they hesitate and demur, the enterprise must
fall through "
It further remarks :
In the rural districts of any portion of Penn
sylvania, such enterprises move slowly. Such a
project in any of the New England States, and
even in many of the Western and North Western
States, would be taken hold of with enthusiasm
by the people. In any one of tbe`Now England
States, such a road would bo built, while our
phlegmatio population are deliberating upon its
feasibility. We have but little of the New Eng
land enterprise with us. It is unfortunately not
a characteristio of our people, and hence our
community is an age behind less favored por
tions of our country. The time is at band, we
venture to hope, when the important advantages
of Such improvements as that of which wo aro

Tbo money market presents an active demand
for money, at 7GB percent. for prime bills, and
B®9 per cent. for second class. Call loans are
difficult of obtainanco, except on the best stocks,
at 7 per cent.
The steamer has brought 'out a considerable

The banks have been drawn upon to such an
extent for specie from the south and west, that,
with a very great additional ergansion of loans
and discounts, their specie strength has' not
been proportionately increased, and is of very
unequal charactersamong the several banlts , l--
There is consequently much movement among
them daily for drawing specie on each other,
more especially for the weekly settlements,
which are made every Friday, but usually pre
pared for on Thursday.
An are now engaged in strengthening their
specie position which is much needed, end con
sequently call loans to parties who do not keep
accounts with them are generally denied,
and their discounts - are limited in the same
manner.
It is the poverty of the banks in specie rela
tive to their liabilities, which has created all the
present trouble in the market.
The trade of the country Is in the soundest
state possible.
The general mercantile community is not even
pressed for money. The western and southern
states, where production has been so materially
stimulated, base been the recipients of all
the new supplies of specie this year, and they
will in no very long time fend it back to the
eastern markets, principally to Wall street, for
supplies of dry goods, teas and other groceries
which will shortly move forward In large quan
tier.

the. latter. • Contracts have beetimade with some
of the fashionable boarding house keepers in.
Philadelphia and New York, for an ample supply
of this new article of traffic. •- It is thought that
the boarders will be somewhat pleased with the
