I t tWhellriAllS historical question raised by Mr.
Hansen, in Puinam'e Monthly, concerning the
identity of Rev. Messer Williams end Louis the
XVII, seems to be coming to a solution. The
New York 'Evening Post says Mr. Putnam has
received a long letter in relation to it from the
Prince de .Joinville, in which it is reported that
hodenies substantially the truth of Mr. Williams'
statement. It is also said thatthern are several
remarkable discrepancies in the Prince's reply,
which only confirm the friends of Mr. Williams
in their opinion as to the legitimacy of his claims.
• In the March number of Putnam, the editor
states that he has been informed by Rev. Mr.
Hanson, the anther of the celebrated article .
Which appeared in the February number of the
,Magatitio, that several new and important limits
have came to his knowledge besting upon this
romantic subject. Mr. Hanson.will make public
the information ho has received, in the April
number. of Putnam. Mr. H. also proposes to
examine the new work of Essocussrm, a Preach
author, who devoted twenty years to collecting
facts in regard to the last illness and death of
Louis 2MI It will be remembered that Mr.
Hanson contends that lionisXVH is now living,
and is tw other person than Rev. Eleazar Wil
liams, a missionary among the Western Indians.

ie.. Taxes upon - Travelers, other than what
is necessary for the expenses and l!gitimate pro
fit upon travel, is but another Mane for tricks
upon travelers. The practice has grown up in a
desire to shirk the payment of taxes on the part
of certain avaricious people, who :bafe-StiMar
toted their representatives to bring in billS and,
to pass lawii:fer imposing' a. perleap?ta tax up
on every one- - paising over .their . State dtireain.
The system robbing Peter. to,pay Rant:,_Paul
is a landholder, or fatiner, er possessor of 'other
propertj , in 'thcState of New Jersey or Mary
land—we mention these two States because they
are the most culpable in the matter—and he
don't like to pay the necessary expenses for ad.
ministering the Goverrment of which he is a
citizen, and therefore looks about to see if 800:10
one else may not bear the burden Which proper
ly should rest upon his Oita , shorlders. ijo
sees Peter in New York and New 'England, and
Peter in Richmond, Charleston, Savannah,
bile and New Orleans, end as it may be pleasant,
convenient or necessary for said Peter to pass
through New Jersey or Maryland,' -Paul chooses
to-treat the stranger nuconrteously enough to
tar him for thelonor and necessity of his jour
ney. This is. what we call robbing Peter to pay
Paul, or the imposition of taxes upon travelers,
to meet tho State necessity of individuals. ' New
Jersey has for many years , pocketed one hun
dred thonsand'dollita a year by the imposition
of this tax, and Maryland one-fifth of all the
passage money received on the railroad travel
between Baltimoro end Washington. The prac
tice is injurious to the State of Maryland, inju
rious to Washington, and a wrong upon the pub
lio generally. We have mentioned already the
intention further, on the part of Maryland, to
make bad worse by the' imposition of an addi
tional tax of fifteen cents upon each passenger,
in case authority is given to construct a bridge
across the Susqaehatina.—N. Y. Express.
The Professions Overstocked.
They are so here, every one knows; and, ac
cording to a late writer, they are more so in
England. " Every profession in England," says
the writer referred to, "is overstocked." Such
is the condition of medicine, that there is scarce
ly a physician of eminence at the present mo
ment bringing up hie son to the profession. A
medical man looks for a fortune with hiswife, as
an indispensable groundwork to • build upon:—
Most medical men begin life with a little capital,
or a resource of some kind, or they would be
compelled to abandon thiir calling before they
had hardly got into it.. The law with the excep
tion of its magnates, 'who absorb nearly all the
business, is bankrupt. Ask solicitors what they
think of the law as a lucrative profession. The
church with its golden benefits on one side, and
the miserable stipends on the other, presents a
hopeless prospect to him who enters it without
a living in his family or a patron among his
friends. There would be no lack of employment
for professional men, if teaching offered a career
to persons of worth and talent. There is igno
rance enough to be enlightened, brutality enough
to be reclaimed, in any country, to afford ample
scope for all its talents and all its virtue. But
lu Borne countries, the business of education is
monopolized by the church; in others by the
state; and consequently to be a teacher of youth
is to be hopelessly poor, and to week under the
hindering and degrading surveillance of ecclesi
stales or trustees. So there is nothing left for
us bat to set up a store and make a fortune.—

Lamm' s() vs. DIriCIPLIXE.—Tho subjoined ex

ng and instructive :
"Learning—learning—learning," is the cry of
father an' mother—"if my boy had the learning
what a jenins he'd he!" In course, ye old fools,
your honcho/ would be a swan among the gos
lings; but it isn't "learning" half the world
want; instead of "teaming," by which they mean
cobwebs picked out of dead men'. brains, if they,
would get some discipline. Discipline, disci.:
that's the only education I ever saw that
bro't a boy to any good. What's the use of bat•
tering a man's brain's full of Greek and Latin
pot-books, that he forgets before he doffs his last
round jacket, or puts on his first long-tailed
blue, if ye don't teach him the old Spartan vir.
tun of obedience, hard living, early rising, and
them sort of classics? Where's the use of in
structing him in hexameters and pentameters,
if you leave him ignorant of the value of a
penny piece ? What height of bretherin stu
pidity it is to be fillip' a boy's brains with the
wisdom of the ancients, and then turn him out
like an omalmun, to pick up his victuals among
the moderns.
IRELAND is nr-nown DAYS.—If on any occa
sion a guest left the room, bits of paper were
dropped into his glass, intimating the somber of
rounds the bottle had gone ; and on his return
he was obliged to awallow a glass for each, under
the penalty of so many glasses of salt and wa
ter. It was the practice of some to have decati
tern with round bottoms, like a modern soda
water bottle, the only contrivance in which they
could stand being at the head of the table, be
fore the host. Stopping the bottle was thus
rendered impossible, and every ono was obliged
to fill his glass at once, and pass the bottle to
his neighbor, on the-peril of upsetting the con
tents on the table. A still more common prac
tice was to knock the stems off the glasses w:th
a knife, so that they must be emptied as fast as
they were filled, as they could not stand. Some
times the guests, as they sat down, put off their
shoes, which were taken out of the room; and
the empty bottles were broken outside of the
door, so that no one could pass out till the car
ouse was over.—lreland Sixty Years Ago.
UNCILII TOM IN Ss. our.—The foreign corres
pondent of tho Newark Daily Advertiser, writing
from Dresden, Saxony, January Gtb,. notes the
following incident of deception:
" A few weeks ago, at the annual fair in Dres
den, one of the greatest curiosities of the day
was a negro woman with a large iron ring in her
nose, represented as a fugitive from slavery.—
She was picte-ed upon the outside of the
log chained by the ring, and a driver, holding a
long whip to his hand, standing by. The ad
mittance was about five cents United States or--
repay: Thousands flocked to see her, in order
to gather from life an idea of American slavery.
It was a good speculation for the erhibitor. I
understand tho above forms a traveling exhibi
tion, mak'ng a tour of the whole of Er-opo."
ra„, A Valuable tliscovery with regard to
Daguerreotypes has been made by Mr. S. N.
Carvelho, an artist of Charleston, South
erreSnit. It has been hitherto necessary
to enclose Daguerreotypes in cases, and cover
them with glass, as the least friction destroyed
the work of son and shadow. Mr. Cerralho has
discovered a perfectly transparent enamel, in
soluble, by all ordinary agents, a thin coating of
which being spread upon a daguerreotype, it
may be carried about w:thont other protection,
or sent by post to any part of . the world. The
enamel produces no perceptible effect upon the
picture.
jr Shipping is scare and in, high demand on
all the Atlantic seaports, owing to the large
number of vessels absorbed by the California
and Australia trade. The consequence is that
all the ship builders at the eastward are full of
work, and tho number of now vessels turned out
the coming season will sr•pass any previous
year. In our own ship-yards business is brisk,
but the Yankees build vessels more at a venture,
and depend upon chance for purchasers. In
this way the ports of Now York and Beaten are
kept constantly well supplied with now vessels,
sent there by builders for charter or sale.
