:feathered, semis were scourged with long, knotty
hickories till they fainted from excess of torture
and loss of blood--others were forcibly deprived I
of their property, and reduced in a"day to the
---- condition of beggars—while others shared
doom of more mercy, and were shot down on the
• prairie. like so Many Waives. At last Turk re
solved- to take some of- tho conceit out of the
young preacher, Mills, and he gave notice to his
- men tticoordingly.
It was 'a dreadfully eoldnight in mid-winter
- 1833; ind'althcingh the sky was cloudless, and
the-fcillineen shone out in all her splendor,. the
earth lay_la
,that .pearly radiance, chill and
dreary as •a frozen tomb ; for a thick sheet of
• snow crusted its sarface,, and the north wind
honied. over ft a diimal dirge. It was a night
to drive even thieves and outlaws into barns
and stables for shelter, and to keep honest peo
ple hythe blaze of their own roaring hearths.
Anil yet, strange to say, in a large log cabin
;within three hendred yards of the Missouri ri
. ver;theiffrozen from shore to shore, atleast one
hundred people had assembled to hold a religions
meeting. They were MorMons, you may be sure.
No finatic of in old faith woold'have turned out
-en inch a night ; they must be fresh zealots,' s
with some new idea, but at its birth. in their
hearts, and flaming like a meteor in their ima
ginatiou, or they never could have ventured to ,
face such an ley blast as that. The congregation
included uton and women in about equal num
tiers, - and many of the former carried rifles,
which - they grasped with one hand, even when
they kneeled ilovni in prayer ; such was the im
minence of peril, either real or imagined, as they
deeMed,.pentlineaver them.
The preacher—the enthusiast, Mills—had ad
• vanced to a thrilling head of his eloquent dis
course, and was painting in terrible, fire lan
guage the hitter persecution which hoe over fol
lowed the footsteps of all great reformers, since
the- beginning of time. Never before had he
, been half. so animated or half so affecting. BM
blue eye gleamed like a star—his voice pealed
• like a trumpet, shrill as the wind that whistled
over tha.honsetop and his lips seemed literally
loaded • with music. groans, tears and wild
-cheeks from the audience, proved the despotic
• power of his utterance.
Suddenly three rifles exploded in quick Emcees •
Mori before the door, and three sentinels, shaking
irith.terror, rushed into the room, crying out,
"the mob! the mob:—Save yourself from Col.
Tork'eMob !" •
No pen , eau depict the scene of dismay and
confusion that, ensued. The females screamed
aloud, as .if ail hope had departed. Several of
•. the men sprang oat of the windows and fled as
if-pursued by a legitin of devils; whilst most of
those r who.remained, appeared stupefied and to
_ ials Liorrerles.s, either to escape or make ready
for resiiiablif. - inileed;--there was very little
apace allowed for preparation. la a few mo
menta a mob' emanating to hundreds had sue
minded the huUding; and the muzzles of fifty
jacked guns and pistols were thrust in through
the dears and windows. Still none within titled
"a finger far defince--fear seemed-to havelurned
thim iota atene. Persecution had not yet har
dened the "Latter Day Saints" into veterans,
and .the afterwards famous " Mormon Legion"
existed then only in the imagination of the Pro
phet.
Presently the lynchers ' headed by the all
dreaded; and gigantic, Col. Turk, rushed in, and
begin-to heat the people furiously with the iron
. ramrods of theirrrifles, with very little dittine
tion'of. mercy as to age or sex. The pries and
entreaties of the poor sufferers swelled ton wail
wilder than the howling of the wind without.—
At length Col: Turk roared out—
" Turn oat the women and seize the men, and
let xis have the-victory switches and the tar and
feathers !"
And the drunken mob shouted, and hastened
• to execute the brutal mandate.
Up to this time young Mille had continued
standing with the Bible of their prophet in his
hand, but unearthly pale and strangely excited,
his lip writhing, his teeth clenched, and his
bright eyes swimming in a halo of fire. Sudden
ly he made a bound for an aijaccut window and
notwithstanding more than twenty endeavored
to seize him, he effected his escape from the
house.
"Chase him—shoot him ! take him, alive
or dead!" cried Turk, in a transport of rage,
setting the example by commencing the pursuit
himself" .
The flight of Mills was directed in a straight
line for the river, and his marvellous agility added
to theitart he had first got, soon placed him at
, some distance ahead. They fired both rifles and
eliot guns at him as he ran, but happily without

the meanwhile Mills had aporonehed the

any of the Mormons from escaping, had station

NbVEL PROJECT.
We have heard of a project of uniting the
Stuebenville and the Chartiers Valley railroads
with the Central road and the Allegheny Valley
road, in the followingmanner: The former roads
to be brought under-Coal Hill by tunneling; the
earth filling out McGowan's lino on the South
side of the river; and the ground thus made pay
ing for the cost of excavating. Thence carry
ing the road over a- viaduct terminating in the
vicinity of the Gas Works. Thence tunneling un
der the Eigth and Sixth Wards, and coming out
is the Fifth Ward. The earth thus excavated
making tho line in McGowan's map on the Pitts
bugh side of the Monongahela river; and forming
the site for a capacious depot at that point; and
also filling out into the water, so as to extend
Water street without the cost of purchasing pri
‘..to property.
This project gets rid of a bridge at the Point,
which would be an obstruction to navigation;
and. also it does ;may with the nuisance of hay.
fag a ragroad through the business part of
the city. If the Liberty stieet grant Wire to be
made over again, there is not a man in the city.
Councils would dare to vote for IL We have no
"doubt but some day the public clamor will be
such that some other route will have to he taken
than through the greatm"ain avenue of our city.
In England the railroads are either taken over
the tops of the houses of a city, on arches of
masonry, or in tunnels under the ground. In
this country wo put up with evils daring the
novelty of a project, but ourppeple never hesi
tate to apply the most available remedy when an
evil becomes intolerable- And what is a greater
nuisance than railroad cars filling up a great
city thoroughfare!
A OIIRRENCY STAMPEDE
The rag-money currency has got most beauti
fully. mixed up in the West. The St. Louis
Union, of the 19th, informs us that the citizens
of that celebrated place for wild epeonlationsand
extensive frauds, particularly those who have a
little of the "root of all evil," were almost fright
ened from their propriety, the day previous, by
the appearance in the Republican, of an official
order, promulgated by "the board of broker."—
The very heading of the ukase, showd clearly
that this distinguished body had "pronounced,"
and that the public should hear and tremble,
"stick them up so that you may always see them,"
confelentigly announced to the world, and the
rest of mankind, that theissueti of certain insti
tutions were to be regarded hence-forth as
worthless. No "Wisconsin Piro and Merine,"
was to be bought or sold, and the Macomb coun
ty bank, Chicago bank, and Osborne's ,checks,
were placed in the same category. There was
also a denenciation of the circulation of various
Saving's banks, Plank road companies, and "le.
dividual liability" concerns, the issues of which
are seldom or never offered in this city.
