This report is said to • be the most able exposition of the finances of the corporation of New York ever before made, and lays bare, with a masterly hand, the extravagance and profligac; of 'the aouncils:' The following Teri:ate-dr the - iiiany startling statements made' in this report : • “ The whole , estimated annual expenditure of the city goierimient'(sol7l,Bo2 70) - Won ly $640,197_21 . / atiajkaai.ithe ',aggregate an nual expenditarea r ifor the-ordinary support of government, ,tof.''.l.hti thirty-elle- States of this Union, including haif a Million for. Ile points mit the items of this expenditure, among which. the following are quite -noticeable : County contingences, .$138,053 ;-cleaning streets, $288,923 ;' " done ,tions," $14,164 • contingent expenses for com mon ,council, $ 31,883;: police, $614,916; sta tionery, $29,998; street expenses, exelneive of cleaning, ' already mentioned, $204,9.961 the ex . pongee of Mr. IVebster's funeral were $8,447. and those - of the funeral of Henry Clay, $16,- 841 ; during the year $16,085 were expended on the reception of Louis Kossuth,' and there re mains an unpaid claim on the same account of $3,639: and there wore " consumed lc the City Hall, by the Aldermen, and those Invited by them, . as sworn to by the head of the bureau, $9,672 making , a total of money spent in pageantry and eating of fifty-one thousand six hundredand eighty five dollars in one year. To this, however, must he added, as of the same class of lavish expendi ture, the sum of $4,287 tar carriage hire for common council, $1,107 for carriage hire for committees, and $547 for 44refrestimente" for raid committees. So that the aldermanie fathers refreshed themselves during the year; at an ex pense to their 'constituents of $10,2201 Mr. t i Flagg gives a copy of the kind of hinter refresh= i meats which the corporation required his prede -1 oesser to pay. It is a curiosity. • All these extravagances Mr. Flagg attributes I not, to any defects in the charter, but to direct 1 violations of the charter. • Another extraordinary fact is mentioned, that since 1826 the ratio of cationt has 'increased seven hundred and forty per le the popu lation of 1825, compared with 1850, has increas ed in 2.5 years only 210 per cent, and estate 168 per cent. There are one or two other facts equally astounding. The bare deficiency in the amount expended; over, and above the estimates of hest year. namely, $887,100, Is within $3,000 of the aggregate government expenses of six of the western States, and only $237,000 less than the sum expendedby dwell New EiglandStates, includidg Massachusetts, which expends half a million in the year. ... iFEbRUARY Dn. Newnsit's ' tea lanst.—The Court of Queen's Bench, in ingiand, delivered judgment in the case of Bev.
