It is from the pen of Mtmeieur F. (Rutz:war,
the Well known and distinguished oorre.spondent
of the "Cloinier deeiltals Unlit." Writing from
"Pa:Wunder the date of January 24th, he thus
speaks of Mr. Soule, whose reputation u an or
ator and ae o n man of liberal principles and lofty
ability, hie Already istended so widely over the
Union: • I
" No illustrious member of Congress could bet
ter fill the mission to Paris than Senator Sours,
one of the most able defenders of the school of
Calaomt, and not lwai seducing as a man of the
world than as a . statesman. Some American
journals have - already made his name figure
among those mentioned by Mr. Fassimatt Prams
for the legation at Pexis, and this news has pro
duced a lively sensation among the press of
France, which has not forgotten that Pierre Soule
was one of its soldiers and its martyrs. The
publie mind hoe been profoundly moved at the
thought of beholding the American Union send
as her representative to France, a former pro
script of her monarchic govarninent, now become
one of the glories of the land which welcomed .
him. This combination would be one of the best ,
things the Union could do in her own honor; it
would say to the eyes of 'Swope more than a
host of books, for it would be a living proof of
that equality, and of that justice which makes
the American Republics the real asylum of hu
manity, where every sorrow is fraternally re
ceived, and every intelligence adopted and re
compensed according to its merits.

in giving publicity to the above, which speaks

ject of its enconitun, and yet is no more than
thousands have long thought, you will Wit:enter
ring a favor upon the party, and undoubtedly
gratifying yourselves.
Very respectfully,
A Steamer 44 High and Dry.”
From the Steubenville Union we learn that the
steamer Alabama, Capt. PRESTO/ ROMMTB, of
that city, lies ins bad position at Montgomery,
Alabama. She was to hays left there on the 6th
of January, and had her cargo all on board,
with a number of passengers and movers; but
in attempting to back out from the wharf early
in the evening, It was discovered that the water
had receded and left her aground. All attempts
to spar her off failed. Another boat was pro
cured, and an effort made to pull her off, but
the hawser parted, and tho attempt was aban
doned as useless. Attempts were then made to
rig ways for launching her, bat the bottom of
the river being quick-sand, no sufficient founda
tion for the timbers could be found, and these,
too, were abandoned. The river, which was
high, receded rapidly, and at last accounts she
was lying high and dry, but perfectly straight.
She would have to lie there alma the water rose
high enough to take her off. As this is the
business season, the loss to her owners will be
heavy.
Editorial Life and Philosophy.
3. L Locke, Esq., one of the ablest and most
accomplished editors of the South, in taking
leave of the gavel:lab Republican, which be has
edited for the last thirteen years, thus speaks of
editorial life:—" The incesesot mental and phys
ical labor demanded to re-produce every morn
ing $ sheet that perishes ere nightfall, can never
be appreciated by those who view the circle of
varied operations from without. It is symboli
zed in claselo story by the atone of Sysipbus,
and the wheel of Won, while I fear the fable of
Tantalus might be superadded to illustrate the
fortunes of many of my brethren of the qulll in
the United States, for too often the promised cup
of enjoyment, never comes near enough to be
tasted. This picture has its reverse, however.
With all its drertutobs, there is =oh that is
efeeiring in en editor's life, and he is a poor phi
losopher, as well as en editor, who cannot return
every morning to his labors, with renewed ever
. and determination."
To Pervzsr COLLISIONS ON RAILROADS.—A
correspondent of the New York Tribune sug
gests the propriety that every railroad company
haves regular line of telegraph on the line of
their roads; and at every important station
there should also be a telegraph station to com
municate each way the arrival of a train. In
this way it can be known when a train started,
its progress ; and the train coming in an oppo
site direction may be know when and where to
meet it. In this way collisions may at all times
be prevented. Those roads having only a single
track should by law be required to have such
telegraph lime without delay. Such an improve
ment would give security to the trareliqg public,
and world In the end be a great saving benefit
to the companies. The animal destruction of
engines, and freight and passenger cars, would
defray the expense of such an improvement, to
gay nothing of the lives and broken and crushed
limbs that would also be saved.

Presents to Oen. PlOrte,..DeSetription of
Ws Inaugural Suite.,
The Concord correspondent of the New York
Herald, in Thursday's Paper, says :
Some of Gen. Pierce's liberal personal friends
in New England seem determined that he shall
go to the White House handsomely equipped,
albeit he is-as modest and unpretending in his •
habits of living as the average of "mankind in
generaL" The Bostonians appear to be tieing
with each ether in this matter. The newspapers
hare already announced that some friends in that
City will present him with an elegant coach and
span of horses on the 21st inst. I learn that
others are now preparing to donate an elegant
snit of clothes, to be completed on Thursday of
the present week. A friend who has obtained a
peep at the pregeamme.rles integuments, has furn
ished me with a description, which I shall trans
cribe for the Herald, and the edification of the
"ton" in New York and Paris. The suit con
sists of six . garments as follows:
1. The fine bleak dress coat, made from the
same cloth which took the premium at the last
World's Pair in London. Coat superbly lined
with satin dechene, sleeve linings also of satin.
Style about *medium between the gravity of age
and the foppery of " rrpper-tendom."
2. Undress waistcoat of plain black silk; back
of satin deehene, and lined throughout with white
satin.
8. Pull-dress vest of plain white silk ; 'back
and linings of white satin. On the satin - lining
of the right side are thirty-one stars, represent
ing- the States of the Union . forming a circle,
wrought in silver. Within ;his circle of Stars is
the Anchor of Hope, worked In gold. Outside
of all is an endless circle. Translation of these
emblems:—" In the Union of the States is our
only hope. God watches over the republic—
eternal be its duration!" Oathe opposite white
satin lining is wrought a chaplet of bay leaves,
tied at the bottom with a golden knot, outside of
which is another circle of gold.
4. Pants of plain bittA doe-skin, of the finest
material that can be procured.
5. Undress pants of a plain black, very fine,
silk and wool mixture.
6. Overcoat of plain black, superbly lined,
and made in the form of a surtont.
This Butt is being ratuanfactured by Mr. H. E.
Armington, Washington street, Boston, a gentle
man who is to the tailbting art what Greenough
was among sculptors.; The embroidery is being
executed by .e lady of that city. It is intended
that the suit elnal be, the finest specimen evs.l ,
I manufactured in America.

Our Wives and Dengitters.
In childhood and youth, girls ere;as , healthy,
hardy and capable of enduring fatigue as boys,
for the very good reason that nature, regarding
it equally as necessary to give them good_ oon
stitations has kindly done so ; and because they
run and rompin the open air, and thus obey the
promptings of unsophistiaMnature. Yet our
men are much more healthy than women, oreven
young ladies. Take the families of nteridants
and business men—not the purse proud nabob
on the one hand, nor the hardy delver on the .-
other—and how stands the matter? The inn
are active, industrious, accustomed to agreat de
gree of bodily exertion; they are busy - with bales,
and boxes among draymen and porters; they are ,
driving about the wharvea end streets all dsy,i
their minds and bedies fully employed, and go
home with a keen and well earned 'appetite;
while their wives and daughters, - standingi. at
course, on the same platform of respectability as
themselves, have dragged through the wearisome
hours of the day in listless idleness or sedentary
pursuits, and approach the table with an appe
tite that almost spurns the repast which other
hands have prepared, and fill their anxious ints
bands' or fathers' ears with complaints of a th 011;.
sand ills which, perhaps; nothing but a summer
at the springs , or watering-places can- assuage:
Poor creatures, they have not been -properly
educated. Fashion would pont its cont emptuous
lips, and toss Ita brainless head at the .ides of
useful foil for_the wife and daughters di a
wealthy merchant? But that same fickle god
dess has no-objection to the father and son go-,
ing into the ' store and laboring all day, rolling
barrels, packing and unpacking goods, which;
for them, is all very well; but she denies to the
daughter any part in household affairs, because
it is vulgar and disreputable, andcousignsherto
the practice of music, drawing, worsted and
lace. work. What matters it itthe son's hand be
hard, his chest and muscles brawny,' his face

This is of _the utmost utility to nli those who
are not expedeneed judges by - the eye. • By the
following directions, the weight ctui be tomer
tained-withio a mere trifle:
Take a string and put it round the breast,
stand-square, just behind the, shoulder blade ;
measure on a foot rule the feet and inches'the
animal is in circumference; this is called tie
girth; then, with the string, measure from the
bone of the tail which picrmbs the line with the
binder'part of the buttock, direct the line Alen
the batik to the shoulder blade ;_ take theditain
alone on foot, then rule as before,-which is the
length, and work the figures in the following
manner: Girth the bullock, 6 feet 4 inches ;
- length, 5 feet 3 inches; which,
_multiplied toge
ther, make 81 square superficial feet, and that
multiplied by 18 (thenumber, of pounda measures
less than sin girth,) make 718 pounds. Where
the animal measures less than 6 and more than
7 in girth, 31 is the number of pounds. to each
superficial foot. -
Again, suppose a pig or any =animist should
measure - 2 feet in girth, and 2 along. the -batik;
which multiplied tegether, make 4 square feat;
that =drilled by 11, the number of pounds al-.
lowed each square foot, of cattle =nearing less
'them 3 feet in girth, makes 44 poqiulk Again,
suppose a calf, a sheep, ac., shcralttareVfeet.
6 inches in girth, and BTeet 9 inch, in length,
which multiplied together, makes square
feet; that multiplied by 16, the number of itut.,
allowed to all cattle measuring lets tinacfivereee,
and morithart three in girth, makes 265 pounds.
The dimensions of the.girth aid length of burn
ed cattle, sheep and calves, or hoge, toy be as
exactly taken this way as it is at all , necessary
for any computation or any valuation of stock,
and will answer exactly to the four quarters--
sinking the offal, and which every man who cart
