We believe that it is a maxim of law that ov- -

know it if the men who make 'the laws do not
adopt the proper means to Inform him of it 4
The r ”Pamphiet Laws" eysteni - is a' humbug, and
tho money orpended for their printing is just so
much of the taxes of the people , thrown'sway.
They ere of no use to the people, for then very
tmffielent real9oll that the people never see them,
Lttoiritluitandimg they ; have to' pay , for them,
If the government desire to bring these laws
before the people, they must publish them in the
public journals, and allow a remunerating pricer
'Tor the labor performed. If our legislators de
sire to spend the money of the people in giving
publicity to their wise enactments, Are would ad
,vise them to, have them published in oche, man
ner as they will be certain to reach the people.
The- only way this_ean be accompilsited, is to
have them pnblithed in the county papers, or
make it obligatory upon the county officers to
tarnish each citizen with a copy of the Laws.
We hope that during the Present session some
mode to reform this sinking system may be dis
covered, and that some more practicable means
will be adopted to inform the people of the vari
ous laws they are bound to obey. As matters
are now arranged, wo are rather a lawless peo
ple, for wo know nothing about the new laws
until we are hauled into Court.

• Young man, if you have arrived at the right
point in life for it, let every consideration give
way to that of getting married. Don't think of

For the Campus Martins once crossed, the Ca:
pens gate once left behind, the Appian Way once
gained, many continue their excursion on horse
back or in, vehicles . ; but many, also, alight and,
giving their equiptites - into the charge of their
slaves, walk to and fro on the intervening - space
between the houses and the tombs or seat them
!selves upon chairs and -stools which out-of-door
speculators hire out to them at the rate of a
half sesterco per hour. Alt! it is there that
real elegance is seen!! it is there, that fashion
reigns arbitrarily I It is there that you may
study genuine models of good taste, in the cut
of the beard, the trimming of the hair, the shape
of tunics and that great problem solved -by
Creaar but again thrown into doubt by the now
generation, namely whether they ought to be
worn long or short, loose or tight fitting. Crosar
wore them tong and trailing on the ground ; but
great progress has been made since Crossett
time! It is there that are seriously discussed
the weight of summer rings and winter rings,
the composition of the best rouge, the beetbean
pommade for softening and smoothing-the skin,
the best pastilles of myrtle arellentisk pulver
ized In old wine for purifying the breath! Oho
women listening while they toss, like jugglers,
from their right to their left hand and back again
balls of amber which freshen and perfume the
atmosphere ; they applaud with their heads,
their oyes and, sometimes, even with theirhands,
the most learned and boldest theories ; their lips
parted In smiles disclose teeth white as pearls ;
their veils flung back permit you to behold, in
strong contrast with their eyes of jet and lashee
of ebony, magnificent masses of hair of a warin
