TEE NEXT STATE CONVENTION. .The next7Democratio State Convention will as semble at Harrisbtirg,.on Tuesday the lst day o f March. Nearly every county in the state has already (Meson delegates. Besides the nomina tion of a Canal Commissioner, the duty of se lecting candidates for Auditor General and Sur veyor General, to serve for the ensuing three years' term, will devolve upon that body. For the last named offices, the present incumbents, Hon. EPHILLIW. Banta and Col. V. POZTEB. BuawLE; are candidates for re-election. For Canal Commissioner, several astingsished dam ocrats have been spoken of. We may mention the names of Col. A. S. Feather, Col. David 8.- Rum of Berke, Henry B. Mott: Esq., of Met'. Hon. Thcpmas H. Forsyth, of Philadelphia, and Hon. Joel B. Danner, of Adams. These are all very good men, acid As the East appears to be entitled to the catolidate this year, we presume the Western Democracy will generally go Unin structed to Harrisburg. One only desire is to see a true and infliuching Democrat and an hon est man nominated—a man who will study the interests of the Commonwealth, and oppose frauds and stealings upon the Pliblio Works. THE SA.LEB BASK DIBIPICULTT. A city- paper—the Dispatch—states that the Post " devotes some space to defending the late -outrage at Salem, 0., where a county treasurer robbed whank." Breit charity must suppose that our neighbor, itkunacenninted with the facts of the case, or else be, would not use such sweeping language. The Port has defended no " outrage at Salem," for no "Outrage" -was committed, unless by:thin Tank officers ; nor did the Treasiiiiri-of •Cobliabianacounty ."irob a bank." . Ile proceeded-legally,_ and - discharged his duties fearlessly, as an honest officer should. If Treasurer' Quitut was a "robber," why did not the Bankers have him indicted ? They endeavored to evade the payment of taxes,— thus violating the laws of the State—and when the Treasurer was discharging his duties, as sworn to do, the Bankers threatened him with violence. It was the Bankers who raised a mob and committed the " outrage at Salem," and we are glad to hear that they have been held to bail for their appearance at Court. • DS. Wrought iron, manufactured with mine ral coal, without reducing it first to pig Iron, and thence by puddling into wrought iron, is now being made in Newark, N. J., bys company acting under a patent received by Mr. Renton, the discoverer. The iron is said to be produced by this process, for $2O leas per ton, and sells for $lO more than the peddled or charcoal Iron. The rationale of the invention is that the iron Is .deoxidyzed by heating a mixture of the pulver ized ore and coal in close tubes so that by the combustion of the coal the oxygen is absorbed from the ore and passed off in an teriform state. The residanm.is taken from the tubes and work ed into balls weighing about 100 pounds each. These are taken to the trip hammer, by which they are reduced to blooms. Two tons of the iron are now made per day, and it requires about two tons of ore, and one ton and a half of coal to produce ono ton of the wrought iron.— The ore or iron must undergo two successive ex posures to the fro before it can be reduced to wrought iron. THE DIFFICULTY SETTLED• A telegraphic despatch from Harrisburg, Jan. . - • 29th, says : A very important arrangement.was corm:mated' to-day, for Philadelphia interests and the State at large. A contractime been en tered, into between the Pennsylvania Railroad -Company and Bingham -& Dock, by which the latter give up control of all passenger babas running in. connection with those of. the Penn sylvania Railroad Company over the Columbia Railroad, to that company. Bingham & Dock will, nudist...this arrangement, act as local agents at Philadelphia,. Tea STATE 07? I9AOIIINOTON.—A correspond ent of the Bt. , Louis Datociat very warmly urges, through the columns of that print, the propriety of forming a new State, to be called Washington, after the Father of his Country, with the following boundaries. He says: "Let us form beyond Missouri a great central State. Let its boundary leave Missouri at Fort Scott, and traverse treat four hundred miles, along the southern rim of the Hawaii Basin; thence north -to .the Platte; thence down the Platte to its month; thence by the Missouri river to the starting ioint," INDIANA BANKING LAW. ---We learn from' the Indianapolis Journal that a bill Is before the lam. ate, instructing the State officers not to receive any applications for Banks under the general law of last-winter. The reason, given for this bill is, that Wall street operators, Now York, arc about to secure charters for Banks in many of the coun ties, for the purpose of using the notes in Now York, instead of carrying on a legitimate bank_ lag business in Indiana. A HAPPY ILLUSTS:ATIOY.—•The Curvier . des Etats Ums, in an article on the caloric ship , g Ericsson," illustrates the operation of the wire apparatus, in alternately beating and cooling the same volume of air, in the following apposite "The great fundamental ,principle of the transmission of caloric, coat the Inventor twenty years of reflection to realize in this machine. It consists in using constantly the same heat to Warm the air which is made to enter tbe cylin- ders. The apparatus by means of which this principle is applied, is called a regenerator— we can form a clear idea of. it by supposing that a man has his mouth filled with awarm metallic sponge; if he draws in his breath, the exterior sir, in traversing the Pores of 'the warm sponge, will itself be warmed, and will arrive warm into the lungs—villa the sponge having partedwith its caloric, will have become °Old. If he exhales the air thus warmed, this air, in again traver— sing the sponge, will again warm it'and will come out reduced in temperature. The reaidum is taken from the tubes and worked into boils weighing about 100 pounds each. These are taken' to the trip hammer, by which they are reduced to blooms. Two tons of the iron are now made per day, and it requires about two tons of ore, and one ton and a half of coal to produce one ton of the wrought iron. The ore or iron must undergo two successive exposures to the fire before it can be reduced to wrought iron. We find the following in French law paper, the Droit:—"Tbe court of appeals of Paris, Borne time agq, pronounced condemnation on a person named Cavendish, for a great number of acts of swindling, the greater part of which were ac companied with forgeries. Different circum stances having caused this individual to be sus pected of misdeeds of another kind, the Prefect of Police, at the solicitation of the abassador of England, and with a view to the general inter est, caused new investigations respecting him to be made, and M. Bouirot, commissary of the judicial delegation, was speedily charged with them. It was soon ascertained that this adven turer is a polygamist, and that three of his wives were in England, and one in Italy. Speaking several Languages with facility, he r assed him self off at one time as a wealthy merchant, at anot her as a member of the House of Lords, at another as a foreigner -cif distinction. In Great Britain he took the names of Gore, Leicester, Lord Howard, Effingham, Charles Howard, Ho race Seymour, Horace Belmore, and others.— There ls reason to believe that the name of Ca vendish, under whielthe has been condemned, is not his real one, and that this Protens has not yet told his secret. Every day, in fact, new circumstances are brought to light against him, and publicity may lead to the discovery of a greater number. Ca vendish lived in _splendid style, and to support his pretensions to high rank simulated a corres pondence with most.eminent personages. Ile thus succeeded in making dupes in the best so ciety, and Introducing himself into the most ex clusive circles. The commerce of Paris Is WWI.. dated with his forged bills. In abort, it would fill a volume to relate the acts of swindling which he has imagined and carried into execution with incredible success. In his interrogatory Caven dish has. confined himself to a system of com plete denials. Placed unexpectedly in presence of the witnesses of his different marriages and of his four trives, ; who were collected to be con fronted with him; he promptly repressed a move ment of surprise, and, impassible in presence of _their recriminations, feigned not to know them. .The only thing which he can be made to confess is that he was detained in the fortress of St. An gelo, at Rome, for forgery. The unfortunate women; who this polygamist has successively do. ceived and abandoned, cannot imagine that he has contracted other marriages, and appear to have felt strong affection for him. His last wife whom he married; in. Italy, positively refuses to believe the facts revesletiln the invetitigation, and vows that oho( will die if her husband be not restored' to her. The'pasaion inspired by Caven dish tan only be explained by a sort of fascinat big influence. He is small, thin, anti lightly bent; his features display cunning and trickery; hie bent nose, and his round and phosphorescent eyes, hurried under-thick -brows, give him the aapect'of a bird of prey." loon ton MAnsins,.—The barque Nautilus, which was chartered to carry supplies for the destitute Inhabitants of Madeira, sailed from this port on Thursday.
