Vim GAZETTE vs. CONIIIISsIONERs
The organ 'of the Sheriff devoted a column and
ti half to the Commissioners on Saturday It sp
peers to think that they base imbibed a moat
malignant feeling against the Sheriff, and fallen
deeplyiniove - with the Post. From what we
have heard in the brat case, we do not believe
tittit the Commissioners have any personal feel
ings upon the' subject. The course they have
pursued appears to be one of duty to the people,
and not. opposition to the Sheriff, as his "organ"
has falsely amerced. They hare disoovered that
exorbitant charges hays been made in the Sher
iff office, and to says the pockets of the people
from this filching game, they have devised& troy
to stop it. It will be of no profit to them, but,
as they have already shown, it will be of great
advantage to the people. But Mr. Magill, and
his , 'organ," are not willing that the Commis
sioners shall relieve the tax payers of a portion
of the burden they have to endure. Mr. Blagill
gets the fees, and Mr. White does Mr. fdsgill's
printing. This explains fully- why these two
gentlemen are opposed to the system of economy
recommended by the Commissioners, and in fa
vor of taxing the people.
• The insinuation that the Commissioner, have
paid us for what we have said on this question,
is simply false. No "fifteen whigi," much less
three, could buy us to do a mercenary act. What
we have dune in this matter is a free gift to the
people, and if we. could think of making out - a
bill for our services, we would just as soon pre
sent it to the whig Sheriff as to the whig Com
miesioners. This principle of gratuitous labor
for the belie& of the people, is not understood
by the editor of the Gazette, and, of coarse, he
assumes that we are actuated by the same mer
cenary motives that have always controlled his
political course. lk is mistaken in thispartion
lar case, and we thick he will find it out before
he is done with the controversy.
If we understand the matter, the Commission
ers have fouling to do with the editor of the
Gazate itt this centreeersy, and it is a piece of
characteristic impertiumme for him to poke
b , tnself into it. If we understand them, they
desire a conversation with the Sheriff specially,
ana not with the' Man atho does his printing.—
the•Cororeivsioners have not. Involved hlx.-White
in this matter : they . a= 'hie party friends and
holes drke 7,00tt eireiiiiiiiitlacing them in alike.
They ore 13 . 0 . Watilr 6:l# ituiti they - weresehen he
advocated theit; election, and we believe that
each and ail of them are as worthy and honest
citizens as to Sheriff ,or the editor of the Ge
-1 :We.
It will not do for Mr. Magiri's "organ" to
tiblise 'the Commissioners in its general terms.
It has nothing to do with the controversy. The
people require Magill shall speak for
himself, and if be can show that the Commis.
alonere have treated him unfairly, be will find a
more disinterested friend in the Post than In bis

ihAmilbr BANK DIPNi6tILTT:
There has been quite an excited abate of 'feel
ing in Columbiana tbuity l ithio r in Aisgarito:the
difficulty ; between the Treasurer of, the
mr. Quinn; and the President 6d4ireitorif 'of
the Salem Bank. We refaired-to the diffiauliya
few weeks age; but blue's that timi3, we have re
ceived the New Lisben full partic
ulate of the occurrence.
It appears that on Monday, the third instant,
Quinn,seiompanied two persons, went
to . thtflenking 'house; in Salem, and demanded
the taxes due by the Bank : an excuse was given
by,the Prpident of the Bank, Mr._Jennings, In
order to gain time, and in a few minutes Mr.
Quinn, the Treasurer, and his friends were at
tacked by the Bank officere,•armed with revel
verb and knives, and thrust from - the Bank.—
Rather a queer kind of treatment for constitu
tional officers of the Inie, in the discharge of
their duty, to receive.
Mr. Quinn was not to be deterred, however,
from doing his duty, and on the 20th instant he
again proceeded to Salem, accompanied by a few
friends on whom he could depend. Three per
sons entered the Banking Nouse on pretence of
business, leaving the Treasurer on the outside.
The suspicions of Mr. Campbell, the Cashier of
the Bank, werucOused, and he attempted to bar
the door, on seeing the Treasurer on the outside.
This was prevented by Quinn's friends on the in
side; the Cashier was disarmed, and the Treas
urer once more entered the Bank. A mob on
the outside assisted the Bank officers, and it wag
not until after a severe struggle that the Treas
urer and his party came off victorious. As the
purpose of the party In-entering was to distrain
for taxes, search far funds was immediately
commenced. The vaults of the Bank were open
ed, but no money found there; in the back room,
however, in the chimney, $5,000 in gold was
found hid under some old rubbish. Out of thin
vim Mr. Quinn counted out the amount of the
tax, together with "the per cent= allowed him
by law, and then peaceably left with his poste.
In tho afternoon of the same day. Sheriff Mar
tin, of Columbiana county, having a warrant, ar
rested R. Webb, F. Stanley, Holloway end Jos.
Thomas, for resisting. with force and arms, the
Treasurer in his first d'art to deatraln the money
of the Bank. These gentlemen were bound over
for trial at the next term of the Court of Com
mon Pleas. Mr. Jennings, the President of the
Bank, is still at large, but will also have to an
swer an.offended lOw.
The difficulty between the Bank officers and
Treasurer, arose from a desirton the part of the
, former to pay tares only on the dividends de
(dared, and not on the money deposited in. the
Bank.

the improvoment consists In going to a party at

go to parties generally from half.past nine to

bodily health a good deal more than they add to
mental enjoyment or intellectual improve

tar Monsieur Potin, the celebrated torment
from Paris, made an ascension from New Or
leans on Christmas day, accompanied by three
amateurs, of which the Picayune of the 2fith
ult., gives the annexed account:—
The balloon was Of immense size, but the
car was the great curiosity. It was built in the
shape of a large skiff, with extensive wings at
taChed to the side, enabling M. Petin to guide
the direction of his wrist craft from within.—
The car is built mostly of cork, lined around
with cavities - containing gas. The ascension
took place soon after two o'clock, amid the
cheers of the crowd, the stars and stripes flying
from the light vessel. Mr. Potin for some time
Could be distinctly seen walking about on his.
frail structure, directing its movements. The
excitement of the spectators was much height
ened by witnessing the balloon pass through
beautiful white cloud, which for a time obscured
the floating machine from sight. The balloon
ascended about eighteen thousand feet, and was
carried by a strong wind to the eastward. By
all accident in managing the valve for the es
cape of gas, too much gas escaped, and the hat
loon rapidly sunk, and fell into the water of Lake
Borgne, about one mile from the land, at eigh
teen minutes past four o'clock, P. M. The boat
or car being loaded. upset when it strut* the
water, which was about fifteen feet deep. M.
Petin and his three passengers clung to the bot
tom of their frail car, when, after being In the
water about bc7f an hour. they were discovered
by the captain. of the 'steamboat Alabama, from

were taken on board and brought to this city.—
