I shall not, at this advanced boor, trespass

}pignab Law of Libel
In the recent Government Prosecution in Ire
land of the editor and publisher of a paper call
ed the Anglo Celt,' for libel on the officers and
soldbfrs of the 31st Regiment, engaged in the
bloody election affray at Bix-mile Bridge, the
Lord Chief Justice, in charging the jury, said:
" There were two matters very much dwelt
upon by the counsel for the accused:--the first
being this, namely, that it was the exclusive right
of the jury to decide whether the publication con
pktined of was libellous or not. He (the Chief
Justice) fully concurred in the statement, that it
was theirAnty.to do so, and be should not at
tempt to interfere with them upon this point."
We submit Ibis opinion to some of our Judges
who think it their exclusive right to decide whe
ther a publication is a libel or not.

Report.
State street was thrown into a tremendous ex
citement the other day, by the report, which gain
ed circulation, that a five cent piece had been
found In that resort of money holders. The re
port was traced to an authentic source. One
told the story who had actually seen it, and han
dled it, and bad oven bit it to taste its genuine
ness, and there could ho no mistake abontit. It
was a thing that never had transpired in State
street before, and everybody wondered who
could have been guilty of the rash act of
losing it. A painful belief gained ground that
some broker's hand had for a moment relaxed
its grip, and dropped the coin in forgetfulness.
That such a thing were possible it was melan
choly to contemplate, and a sad degeneracy in
the firmness of holders was augured from the in- . .
carrence. Tho excitement, however, was soon
relieved by discovering that the mane." belonged
to a reckless apple merchant, Who had not been
located long enough in State street to know bpi
to hold on to his money. A tote of congratnia-
Lion was immediately passed by the board of
street brokers, and several individuals suspected
for a moment of the carelessness, wore. pot once
more upon a good standing. It is hopod nothing
of the kind will transpire to that neighborhood
again. The apple mini,' we are happy to learn,
vas immediately expelled from the precinct.

while engaged at work in the Rolling Mill at this
place. Ile wee employed as "beaver" at the
largo bar rolls, and after throwing np a limp of
hente4.l metal, stepped behind. the "housing" to
avoid being burned by the sparks. While stand

the fastenings, and ere an effort could be rude
to save him, he was hurled down and drawn
through between the couplings of the rolls, and
crashed and mangled in such a horrible manner,
that death ensued In a few minutes. The body
was much bruised and mangled from the head
down to the thighs, titibewels being torn out—.

large enough to arnirt one-luilf, its size. The

Tho body was =rued to its last resting
place on Friday- followed by a largo- number, of
friends and, acquaintances of the deceased, and

DISCONTENT IN &TROPE —An American gentle
man, writing to the Boston Journal from Paris
confirms what every intelligent traveler in Eu
rope must have observed. Ile says:
‘, In Austria despotism is doing its work ; by
pushing matters too far she is preparing trouble
for herself in the future, and that future not a
very remote one. I affirm as the result of per
sonal knowledge, that there is not a province of
Austria that is not discontented. Italy is but
ono mass of 'conspiracies, and the beheading of
a dozen conspirators, but calla into existence ten
times that number. Hungary is quiet, but it is
only the quiet of a temporary exhaustion, ren
dered more necessary by the hordes of the Czar
still hovering on her - borders. The Slavonic pro
vinces, the supporters of Austria in her strug
gle with Hungary, are murmuring; Bohemia is
discontented, and tho Tyrolese, that noble peo
ple, whose patriotism and whose courage hare
become proverbial, who In 1848 received with
outstretched arms the Emperor eying from his
capital, are now ready to join any movement
which 'shall present a prospect of freeing them
from the enormous burdens under which they
are groaning."

Woe In Railroad Iron.
The last advices from England, quoting Iron
rails at .£0 10@l0 If/ ton, on board, which is a
large-advance on previous rates, will in its effect
have an Important bearing upon the construction
of new lines in this country. At these rates,
laid down in this country, about
r e l 74) per ton, e ton ° , B. bo t ing an advance of over $3O with
in the peat five months.
Wonder how much higher this iron must go to
induce oar American iron mongers to try their
hand; liow, mnch over seventy dollars per ton
do they want? The P(10160 Railroad will in all
probability be built by-a company who will make
their own iron, either tieing the Lake Superior or
Missouri iron mountains - for that purpose. It
can be made here for $4O per ton, and a much
better article than that imported.—Cleveland
