CALORIC AS A MOTIVE POWER.
The fact is now known to the world, that
Calorie, on heated a 4, can be applied as a mo
tive power, to perforin the same offices as steam.
The matter has recently, been, erscceinifully tested
by Mr. EHIC93O2i, at. New Ta'rk; with the beauti
ful Calorio Ship which beirif his name. It is
iiiiif, that she duly made fouiteen miles per hour
'with', the wind and tidor and eight against them.
But ; even that okeed a wonderful triumph, con
•sidining it wasibe first of the experiment.
In thenarly days of steam-power, the speed was
not so great as that of the Calorie Ship.

RAILOOAD TO LAKE SUPEOIOII.-A meeting
was held in New York, on Wednesday, -with a
view to concert such measures as would best pro
mote the establishment of a Railroad to connect
Lake Superior with the seabaord, by moans of
an extension of the present line from Chicago,
and thereby secure a daily open communication
by land in place of that by water, which, owing
to interruption caused to navigation during cold
weather. creates a perfect embargo upon the
transportation of all freight and supplies, for a
period of seven months out of 12 months in the
year. It was resolved to urge Congress to grant
to the States of Wisconsin and. Michigan respec
tively, for the purpose of aidingln.Making the
proposed 'Railroad, every. alternate section of the
public land through 'which the Rook River Val
ley Union Railroad (by which it is proposed to
effect the connection) passes, equivalent to seven
sections in width on each side of said road and
its branches.

article in the Boston Post, of the 19th hint:
"Now, us the President will assuredly be held
responsible for the working character of his cabi

ought certainly to enjoy the privilege of having
such persons to aid him in the discharge of his
duties as A/ judgmeot shall select, free from
any attempted dictation or coercion_ In doing
this, in making the selection, he has before him
the whole democratic party—not as it - wasila
1848, distracted by Intestine divisions, and in a
state of defeat, butes it rose in 1852—the great,
united and victorious party of the nation.
"In making, from snob a stand-point, his se

necessarily, disappoint many. Justice, however,
requires that the people should not condemn a

'events shall lava proved this judgment to have
been erroneona. It should - be

that the purposes, policy and' principles that
united the democracy of the, whole country so as
to enable It to achieve power, must be regarded
in the use of power. Good faith, require this,
while expediency and wisdom demand it, in
order to save the democratic party from the po
sition of disunion and defeat from which it has
just beenrescued, and to enable it to continue
to retain power."
