CILIMMT C. ,110012 r.: NEW" BOOK!. Wier Ma. &min hair avast deal of difficulty in advocating his own election to the Mayoralty. He affects to consider the remarks of...the Pf!st on the enbject, "silly and stupid.".., the usual trick - of.the,Joura4 w!lett !Omni:tat:an swer any of the arguments of its cotiniporaties. It gets over therdifficultrhy calling their nrlioles "stupid and 'silly." But thin course T ili u u t serve his purpose e&far as the Post is concerned. He must appear before the bar of the people, and answer the plain and honest arguments that have been urged against hiseleotion. We read an article in the Diaptitah of. yesterday,' is which isodescribed In neither 'a "stupider silly" manner. It is addressed to one of the ed itors, and in that address we think we see a principle kir deapotism. Be this as it may; heiv ever, we have seen the, saree arguments used un der a different signature., then that,of "Clay." The writer says:. "If it Is light and _pumeito make the Mayoraiity a party question at the present tat; it - would also have been right to have done aci-at..purvions - ilectionti—wheif Metutcheon. Roggen end Sawyer were the candidates of the party. If appeala for that purpose had been made to the party, on tholcs . loy the Journal, its present course wear an appearance of consists:nay, and: Bin ! Riddle, might now claim credit for honesty of purpose. Rut wan examinetkno of his tiles will fail to detect anything of the kind—unless in the shape of communications, for the insertion of which he charged at full rates—Mr. Riddle's new zeal; under all the .circuxastances, is, to any tbo least, ft lithe suspicious—end -not a few whigo, along with myaelf, have come tollie con clusion that Mr. It is influenced in the present more by por n:Mal considerations than (as he pretends.) by the attach. meat to the interests of theparty.e . • . This is strong and decided language ageing Mr. Riddle, but the writer follows with some thing still more pointed against the whig nomi nee. lie says : few years ago Mr. James W. 'Baxter, a well-known Whig, whets moral character was without blot or blemish, received the nomination of the Whig County Convention for the office of County Treasurer. • The domination was fairly `made. There was no suchmanagement (I:ti.Migit by • mild name,) as that resorted to for the purpose of carrying the Eighth Ward in the late contest no pretence imiced,of fraud of any kind—and yet the editor of the Ammo/ refused to "raise his name in hie paper, and it is fair to presume voted tbr his opponent. Next comes lien. Macs Hampton. The ..opposition of the editor of the Journal to this gentleman, when a whig candidate for Congress, is so notorious that I need seemly call attention to it—and, though I tempos* It would be difficult to adduce positive proof of the fact, there are few an doubt that (on that occasion) he voted for the democratic candidate. Next, and last, is the use - of Wm. Magill, the present. whig Sheriff. The attacks on that gen tleman and on his nomination are of so recent a date, that your readers cannot fail to recollect thorn—and, though Mr. „kiddie finally raised his name, with the remainder of the' .tickat, to the head of his columns, yet It Is a well-known tact that the most determined opposition to his election em anated from hangers on around the Journal officer I will not now enumerate his many other defections, Tylerism, and injuries which he has done to the party by _having control of the columns of a professedly whig paper. I bare ' , hewn conslusively, T think, that according to the rule litid down in his recent numbers, lee Is not entitled to the (rapport of the whit; party, because, though deriving his bread and butter from that party—he ha oppowd Its rimed mees, and - by his position (as editor of profcesedly whig pa per.) done more to injure that party than perhaps any other man in the county. The Whigs, then, ought not to, and will not support him. There will be some half damn other candidates—any one of whom, I may almost say, on the leery of whiggery, will be as acceptable as him, and on all other accounts much preferable." The other allusions in the article we have no "taste to publish. Tee editor of the Journal may treat them as "silly and stupid" if he chooses, but the public-would desire him to give the ar tide which we have quoted, a more serious no tice than the flippant nonsense with which he has met all objections to his election ,horetofore. = It is foolish for him to suppose that the peo ple who have to vote for Mayor, will not investi gate his claims, competency and qualification, beyond the doubtful nomination of mach a con vention from which he claims his potent for the pfHce. We-know better, and when the election ;lay comes round, the people will show him that they are neither "stupid or silly." We will close this article with the following extract from the American of yesterday. It is from a Whig organ older in the faith than the Journal. Will the editor of the latter say that its remarks are "silly , and stupid?" Whatever they may be in his estimation, we are of the opinion ,that the remarks are pointed, and the editor of the American is after the editor of the Journal with a very "sharp stick." The Amer ican says:— "TIM lIITOPALTT.—IVB learn that a large number of whip of the city, indignant at having throat upon the par ty by unfairoese and fraud, a renegade from all parUra, are preparing to call ont a candidate of their own—one whme life ie a guarantee of hie attachment to the party and Its ,prineiples„ and for whom they can conacitmtionsiy cast their .votre, an for en honest man and a whlg." EEXT PENNSYLVANIA STATE PAIR Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and . Friday, September 27th, 28th, 29th, and 30th, have been selected by the Executive Committee of the State Agricultural Society, as the time for , hold ing the next Agricultural Fair. A Committee was appointed—Judge Watts. of Carlisle. Chair man—to receive proposals from the cities and towns desiring to secure its location with them. It is conceded that'the next State - Fair should be held west of the Allegheny mountains. And certainly there is no ptdce that combines so many attractions, and holds out so many inducements for that purpose, as the city of Pittsburgh. This city can now be approached by Railroad from the East and West, and articles can also be brought here for exhibition from the vast, region of country penetrated by our rivers andsanals. In the vicinity of the city there are many large open . lots, beautifully "Situated. and easy of se- Cess,- which can, no doubt, be obtained grain'. tonsfY, for tiu3.Fair 'Grounds. TUE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION The resent election for President of .the Unit ed States was the seventeenth which has been since the adoption of the Constitution. We give below a statement of the electoral votes given at all the elections from that time. The first four elections were held tinder the Constitution as first adopted, which requireethe electors tovote for two persons, and then the one having the highest number of votes was to be President, and the next highest Vice President At the election 'in 1800 Jefferson run for President and Aaron Barr for Vice President, (both as the Democratic nominees,) and the Democratic electors in all the States, in which they were chosen, having voted for them, there was consequently a tie vote, sad the selection between them thus devolved on Congress. As neither of the then two opposing parties—the Democratic and Federal—had con trol of a majority of the States, there was great excitement about the election. Mr. Jefferson was ultimately chosen ; and then to prevent the recurrence of such a difficulty, the Constitution was amended so as to require the electors to vote for out person for President and another for Vice President.
