His name was B. F. Foster. Another person, named Alfred Turner, was burned in the ruins, by the falling in of the roof of an adjoining build ing, but be was rescued alive. Three stores on the lower floor of Chicker:ng's building, occupied by Thomas Merrian, grocer; Edward Butman, crockery-ware; and Amos Cummings, grocery, were also consumed, together with the buildings No. 828 and 828 Washington street. The Adams House was saved only by the most desperate ex ertions of the firemen and by the boarders. The roof was on fire several times, and many of the windows were cracked by the intense heat from the burning buildings. This inetitutien commenced operations about 20 months since, with &capital of two millions of dollars, for the avowed object of compelling ati the banks in the State of New York:nnd the New England States to keep their notes at'rea in the city of New York, with what success our readers may judge from the following-facts : Of the 370 banks In the Eastern States, not one is taken at par by any Bank in this city ; the dis count is precisely the same as it was two years ' since. Of the 187 Banks in the State of New York which were quoted at # per cent. discount when the Metrepolitan first commenced the business, 188 are still at the same discount, and will pro bably remain so. The exception is the little "Suffolk County Bank" on Long Island, the notes of which are redeemed by the Metropoli tan at par ; the average redemption of this Bank is rather lees than $7OO per day, so that tho community actually save a trifle under two dol lars and three quarters every working day, equal to about one cent per annum for each individual, by the operations of this mammoth, which was to regulate the currency of the Union. Nei, at liberty to refer to the most distinguished medical gentlemen In New York. Sulzer observed, that when two pieces of metal of different kinds, as copper and zinc, are placed ono aboVe ,another beneath the tongue, as often as the 'prejeCting ends. are brought in contact, a remarkable metallic taste Is perceived. This led to what Is called voltaic electricity, and also to the galvanic rings, the efficacy of which, perhaps, many of your readers are aware of. The important discovery is this:—!f a cylin drical piece of zinc is placed near the top of a broom-handle, and another about 'fifteen inches below, connection being made between the two by means of a wire, a person taking hold of the top piece with the right hand, while the left is placed on the copper or lower piece, forms a vol taic circle, which becomes powerful the more the broom is used. The hands must be without gloves, so that the metals are in contact, and the windows of the room should be open when the broom is used, so as to admit the air freely. The discovery is invaluable to females in a weak state for want of active life, and for males It can be applied to axe handles —N. Y. Parson Brownlow in his paper, the ffnoxville Whig, of Saturday, concludes an article on the course he intends to pursue as follows: "Finally, in order to strike an effectual blow for true republicanism, to aid in the restoration of sound whig principles, we fling the proud, the glorious banner of Millard Fillmore to the breeze for President in 1856, and under this flag we shall fight, sink or triumph, live or die." A whig paper of western Pennsylvania has hoisted the name of Edward Stanley, Esq., of North Carolina, as the whig candidate for Presi dent of the United States in .1856.
