-The next person who entered, after a long in

in shocking bad taste, but the crying sin of his
appearance was his unfortunate head of hair.—
Yet he seemed proud of his "burning shame,"
for he wore it long and curled, and frequently
ran his fingers through it, as he glanced at its
startling brilliancy reflected in the large mirror.

t er We observe that the papers in various
cities have started a discussion on the worn-ont
subject of Hosairrn. No person will deny the
fact that he is agreat, pattiot, but, it is evident.
to all that his Patrietie aspirations have failed
to accomplish the purpose he proposed when he
commenced collecting money to effect a revolu
tion in the little kingdom, of litingiry. When
he in America, he was received pith

try;
and we believe that to obtain heffreedem,
lie would consider his life a small Sacrifice. But
his enthusiasm has led himinto a very great er
ror, and has bled the American peopleof a large
amount of money thaivrillmever be made avail
able for the purpose tor which it was intended.
He labored with great industry for the MUM
in which his heart was enlisted, but it is now ap
parent-to all right thinking men, as it was at the
time we gave him such a splendid ovation, that a
Republic in Hungary is an Madan. There is no
portion of continental Europe prepared for such
a change, and even if such a spot could be found,
the overshadowing monarchies around it, would
crush it in a day. In Rossuties tour through the
United States, he was fiery successful in creating
an excitement, but beyond that, we are not aware
that his visit has advanced.the freedom of Hun
gary. This, we think, leen adjointed question,
and when we have our own continent free from
monarchical rule, as it should be, it will be time
enough for us to undertake to liberate those who
bow to kingly powerin the old world.

corner Fifth and Smithfield streets. As she has
occupied a prominent place in the history of the
German revolution of 1848, her discourses can
not fail to prove highly interesting to every lover
of Germany, German liberty, and German peo
ple; and especially so to those who can under
stand the German language. Madame Anneke
is one of the most highly cultivated women of
her country; and, therefore, both sexes will
hear, in the course of her stay among us, much
to please, to enlighten, and gratify them, not
merely in relation to Woman, and what particu
larly concerns her ; but also truths for the states
man, the political economist, the philosopher—
all—to ponder over when passing along amid the
active scenes of life. We hope that the house
may be crowded ; as we doubt not it will

A direct, sit foot guage Road front New York
to Cincinnati, is in contemplation, branching off ,
from the Erie Road at Little Valley,- above
Olean, and traversing the counties of Warren and
Crawford, in Pennsylvania, and from the North
Western line of that State, direetSto Cincianati;
or as nearly so as practicable. - We have been
aware of this important contemplated connection
with the Erie Road, as well as the Allegheny
Valley connection to Pittsburgh, for some weeks;
but was not aware; nail* made so to-day, that it
was to be of uniform wide gunge. The Cincin
nati Gazette has the following referring to the
same project:
A project is on foot, and is pressed with great
earnestness by Eastern capitalists, as well as by
many enterprising citizens in Ohio,-to construct
a line of Railway from Olean, New. York, through
Pennsylvania and Ohio, to connect with lines
leadingto Indiana and to Cincinnati, at Some
suitable point in Ohio. This track to connect
with the New York and,Erie Road at Olean, and
to be a six-foot track, se as to open an unbroken
wide gnaw, from New York to this city. The
proposer/line, as we understand it, passes down
the Valley of the Allegheny, may to Warren, Pa.,
thence into Ohio by Warren and Ravenna, and on
to intersect tho Pennsylvania and Ohio Road at
Wooster or Mansfield, branching south-west to
this city. Should this line strike . Wooster or
Loudonville, it will, probably, take the route
through Mount Vernon, Delaware and Spriog
field in this direction, and will make a pretty
direct route from thi s to Olean.
This is an important project, and we are in
formed that it is based on existing charters in
Ohio, (granted under the old constitution) andin
Pennsylvania and New York. We are not now
able to refer to theprecise provisions of the char
ters alluded to, or to give their.dates or titles;- but
we suppose that the whole extent of the proposed
line within the State or lipaoric, and for some
considerable disfiriee Within the State of Penn
sylvania, will be over the route of the Allegheny
Valley road, from Pittsburgh to Oleon, and with
in Ohio will pass some thirty or forty miles south
of the Lake shore in the Western Reserve, di
verging gradually farther south. Should the St.
Louie track be laid on the wide gunge, it may
happen that a continuous line of wide guage road
may connect the oities of St. Louis, Cincinnati
and New York.
Terrible Storm on the liledlterranenn
M. J. Gaines, Esq., U. S. Consul at Tripoli,
in a letter to the American Consul at Malta,
communicates the particulars of a terrible hur
ricane which occurred on the Mediterranean
on the 19th, 20th, and 21st of October. In the
harbor of Tripoli sixteen vessels and acbeos
were driven ashore and went to pieces, and eight
or nine lives lost. On the coast seven other ves
sels were wrecked. A Turkish brig, with a val
uable cargo, and fifty passengers, was likewise
lost. The dead bodies, as well as the cargo,
were subsequently pillaged by the Arabs, buts'
the Governor General had despatched a strong
force to arrest the ringleaders, and to demand
the stolen property, or its value in money, from
the tribe to which they belonged. In the inte
rior much dsmage, was also sustained by the
mountain torrents sweeping off the date and
olive trees. A letter from Malta says :
Quite a large dumber of vessels were lost off
Sicily, and many lives lost. Every arrival here
brings fresh accounts of disasters in different parts
of the Mediterranean. Several vessels were
lost is this harbor, and some twenty or thirty
lives also lost. Walls that have stood for hund
reds of years were blown down, and the water
of the sea rushed into the harbor with tremend
ous force, and ceased vessels to bo forced from
one side of the harbor to the other."
The United States sloop-of-war, St. Louis, D.
N. Ingraham, Commander, bound from Tunis to
Tripoli, encountered the gale when off the coast
of Tripoli, and is believed to bo one of the few
vessels that survived it. It is believed that if
the gale had lasted ten hours longer, she too
would have been driven ashore."
The geniusof the Cleveland Plaindealer
is'about ae profound ae "Seth Stokes, the man
who knew how to manage the women." Haar
him:—
Loom Our you THE WOMEN—Young men keep
your eye peeled when you are after the women.
If you bite at the naked hook, you are green. Is
a pretty dress or form so attractive? Or a pretty
face even ? Flounces, boy, are of no sort of con
sequence. A pretty face will grow old. Paint
will wash off. The sweet smile of the flirt will
give way to the scowl of the termagant. The
neat form will be pitched into dirty calico.—
Another and a far different being will take the
place of the lovely goddess, who smiled sweet
smiles and eat your sugar candy.
Beep your eye peeled, boy, when you are after
the women. If the little dear is cross and scolds
at her mother in the back room, you may be sure
that you will get particular fits all around the
house. If she blushes when found at the wash
tub with sleeves rolled up; be sure, sir, that she
is of the codfish aristocraoy; little breeding and
less sense. If you marry a gal who knows noth
ing but to commit woman slaughter upon the
piano, you have got the poorest piece of music
ever got up. Find the one whose mind is right,
and then pitch in. Don't be hanging round like
a sheep thief, as though ashamed to be seen in
the day time, but walk up like a chicken to the
dough and ask for the article like a man.

of the •Newpott Memo% or. 'Weekly Advertiser,
of Dec. 19, 1758 ;by lemeitl'ratilditi. We make
the following extract : •
Fr= the Supplement to the New Torkbezette.
Early on Monday morning last, an express ar
rived hero from the WestSrard, and brought sun
dry letters, which gave an account, that General
Forbes was in possession of Fort-Do Quescre ;
ono of these letters says, that the " Monsieur!'
did not stay for the approach of our army, but
blew up the fort; spiked their cannon, throw
them into the -river, and made the beat of their
way off, carrying with theln everything that was
valuable, except the spot where the fort stood."
And yesterday another express arrived here with
other letters, confirming the foregoing, and di
rected from the fort itself, the most particular of
which are as follows via:—
Foam DA Quasac, Nov. 26, 1758.
" I have now the pleasure to write to you from
the rains of the fort. On the 24th, at night, we
were informed by one of our Indian scouts, that
he had discovered a cloud of smoke above the
place ; and soon after another came In with cer
tain'intelligenoe, that it was burnt and abandon
ed by the enemy. We were then about 15 miles
from it. A troop of horse was sent forward im
mediately, to extinguish the burning; and the
whole army followed. We arrived at six o'clock
last night, and found it in a great measure de
stroyed.
There are two forts about twenty yards dis
tant; the one built with immense labor ;'small,
but a great deal of very strong works collected
into little room, and stands on the point of a
narrow neck of land, at the confluence of the
two rivers ; it is square, and has two raveling,
gabions at each corner, &c. The other fart
stands on the bank of the Allegheny, in the form
of a parallelogram, but nothing so strong as the
other ; several of the outworks are lately began,
and still unfinished ; there are, I think, thirty
stacks of chimneys standing, but the houses all
destroyed. They sprang a mine, which rained
one of their magazines ; in the other we found
sixteen barrels of ammunition, a prodigious
quantity of old carriage iron, barrels of guns,
about a cart-load of scalping knives, &o. They
went off in so much haste, that they could not
make quite the havoc of their works they in
tended. We are told by the Indians that they
lay the night before last at Beaver Creek, about
forty miles down the Ohio from here. Whether
they buried their cannon in the river, or carried
them down In their battoes, we have not yet
learnt. A boy, about twelve years old, who has
been their prisoner about two years, and made
his escape on the 2d instant, tells us, they had
carried a prodigious quantity of wood Into the
fort; that they had burnt five of the prisoners
they took at Major Grant's defeat, on the Parade,
and delivered others to the Indians, who were
tomahawked on the spot. We found numbers of
bodies within a quarter of a mile of the fort, un
buried, so many monuments of French human
ity 1 A great many Indians, mostly Delawares,
were gathered together on the island last night
and this morning, to treat with the General, and
we are making rafts to bring them over. Whe
ther the General will think of repairing the rains,
or leaving any of the troops here, I have not yet
learnt. Mr. Batie is appointed to preach a
thanksgiving sermon for the superiority of his
Majesty's arms. We left all oar tents at Loyal
banning, and every conveniency except a blanket
and a knapsack."
Another letter mentions, that onjeitbont 2600
picked men marched from Loyal ianning ; that
the garrison consisting of abony4oo men, part
of which are gone down the Ohio, 100 by land,
supposed to Presque Isle, and 200 with the Gov
ernor, Mons. Delignier, to Venango, and to stay
there till the spring, and then return, and dia
-1
possess our people. That 200 of our people are
to be left at Fort Du Qualm now Pittsburgh, to
keep possession of the ground, 100 of the oldest
Virginians, the other of our oldest Pennsylva
nians ; that the new raised levies are all dia.
charged ; and that at the last affair at Loyalhan
ning, the French lost nine Indians on the field,
and carried off four mortally wounded; this an
Indian now in oar Camp informs us, who was in
the engagement.
FORT Do Queens, Nov. 80, 1768.1
After much fatigue and labor, we have at last
brought the artillery to this place, and found the
French had left us nothing to do, having on the
24th instant blown up their magazine, and burnt
their Fort to the ground. , Their Indians 'had,
either through fear, or to atone for their many
barbarities, deserted them ; and as theydepend
ed on them to attack us in , the woods .(the only
chance they bad of beating us,) the French
judged rightly in abandonmg a fort, the front of
whose polygon is only 160 feet, and which oar
shells would have destroyed' n three days. We
have-fired some howitzer shells into the face 'of
the work, whieltle Made of nine-inch plank, aid
,rammed between with earth; And found that in
firing but a few hottia, 4 we must have destroyed
the entire face. [All this, confirms the soma at
we received two weeks pact, that the Fort atu‘.
rendered without resistanoe l] - •
