“ SCOTT LEADS THE COLUMN.”
Vermont, (Plurality) *a- 4,000,-ga
The Ohio Statesman, of Friday, contaios re
turns from ail the counties in Ohio, with the ex
ception of Brown and Adams, the larger portion
of them being official. They foot np os follows:
SUPBEMD CouBT.
Caldwell, democratio majority....
Haynes, whig majority
Estimating Brown at 600, and Adams at. 860,
from which, the Statesman thinks, they wiU not
vary much, it makes the Democratio majority in
the State,
The official tabic complete, will vary this but
a few votes, and it is as liable to increase as to
diminish it.

The Modest Hero.

has had his wreaths of victory pat up after the
fashion of Bhokers’ herbs, so as to ocenpy the
least possihle compass and attract the least pos

highly adorns a woman,’' it is equally becoming
in « hero. As a candidate Tor the presidency, it

Ulfted with powers of oratory as peanlior as they
aro extraordinary, if not more 30, it might have
been surmised, we say, that,in his progress thro’
the Wcßt ho would drop au occasional speech

not been hie course. In order to show that he
was “swayed by no party, higet to no ecct," ho
has spoken everywhere to everybody about ev
erything—sowing his words broadcast without a
thought of reaping any crop from them at the
groat political harvestin November. Bull, chance
sown seed sometimes germinates, and perhaps in
the result of the Pennsylvania election we see
the fruits of Gen. Scott's visit to Pittsburg in
the vote of Ohio, the direct consequence of his
progross through the Buckeye State. Doubt
less, had be made electioneering harangues in
p|*co of the timid, eelf.ftbasing spoeches irWch
did so much honor to his humility, those States
would have gone whig by a limitless majority.—
But if there is anything for which the illustrious
soldier is distinguished in civil life, it la his ha

is said that when a child he never could be In

alphabet, without reddening from the cole of his
feet to the coronal region. From all' that has
been published of his writings and Speeches, we
infer this anecdote to be true.— N. T. Timet.
