for us to refer to the record to refresh kis mem

transactions.
The warners article of 'yesterday is a most
lame - conclusion. Be has been told that Le made
' a mistakein hie windy article of the preceding
day, and after being informed , by Barker and
Magill of his folly, he - "hopes the matter will
rest." This aisposal of the case cannot be al

that "Joe Barker" informed him that he bad
not made any charges against Mr. Magill, such
as were mentioned on Wednesday morning; but
we have high authority for saying that "Joe"

• Mr: Magill, however, has resolved to make a
statement, which his friends expect will fully ex

We bopo no will do so, and that he can explain
all the mysterious questions that his political
friends have started in reference to his services
as a Public cfficer.
Inasmuch as this matter has been referred to,
it must be cleared op, and that must be done in
a fall and , satisfactory manner. This is not a

many years,. and have always esteemed him en

It will be an easy - matter for Mr. Magtll, when
he prepares his statement, to allow that Barker's

ANOTHER TICKET IN THE FIELD
On Monday the ' , American Party" bad a small
but highly respectable meeting, - which they call
ed, by cortitesy,a Convention. They went through
the motions of a nomination, which resulted as
follows:.
Congresi-2lst District--Lewie J. Fleming.
" 22d 4 ' Jacob Shawer.
Senate—Col. D. McCurry.
Assembly—James B. Lowis, Henry Phillips,
John Richardson, John Stewart.'
rietbonotary—E. C. Putnam.
Commissioner—CaPt. V. Shorts.
• Cdrotier...Dr. W. M. Bern.
Associate Judge—Dr. Joehos Hart.
Auditor—J. McCormick. •
We have not the slightest doubt but that all
these candidate are first rate men, but there are
quite a large number of the people would like to
know who they ate? ' 'Col. 'D.. McCurry" we
have seen before; the name of Capt. V. Shorts,
who is st very long man, is familiar, but, as the
would pay, the balance are rather "pre
vious," and we do not think they.can be elected.
There is one office, however, for which they
•
have made no nowination;—than is for Sheriff.
We are told that the name of neigh!
b2r, ALEXANDRE JAYNES, - ass mentioned for the
office. We aro glad he was not nominated, for
several reasons : In the first place because - we
thinkhe wOuld not have it ; second, we know be
in note member of that party, but a most ineorri
gable Scott man, and, in the third place, that
we desire to see him "come to tea" about the
time the election returns come in, without feel
.- ing that he has been awfully beaten.
• We have been Informed that the party refrain
'ed from nominating a candidate for . Sheriff on
account ors friendly feeling towards the oldest
Bookseller in the Western ecmntry. Bat Barker
is somewhat displeased at This proceeding. Be
thinks that his services in the "cane" should

:The Whigs—the more reckless portion of them

of a letter to - a gentleman of Detroit from an in
telligent, well-informed citizen of Wisconsin, is
published in the Free Press:
" Just na sure as November comes round, I
think our State may be set down, for at least six
or seven thousand for Pierce and King. Wiscon
sin is not a doubtful State..• You may depend
upon it our Jive votes will number with the De

Evictly so. Let the Whigs brag on Wiscon

will add (says tho Free Press) a word from Illi

, g The coarse Is clear hero. Scott is nowhero

—Graham bread won't go down. Set us down
for fifteen thousand for Pierce. The truth - is,
we have it all our own Way. The Democrats
have got the feeling, the enthusiasm, and the

Thy State is goad for 15,000."
gr. We acknowledge the receipt of the first
number of a large
,and very pretty daily paper
from the "City of the Forty Wagons," entitled
the neeliug Daily Intelligence?. It is published
by E. B. Beearinger and 0. 1. Taylor, and edit
ed by Messrs. Pendleton & Taylor. The worst
feature alwoi the paper is, that it is a blue-light
whig concern. We wish the publishers may be
successful in everything but in their efforts to
prolong the reign of Federal Galphinism.
B el. We call .the attention of western mer
chants - visiting Phibadelphts to the cant of
Messrs. Shober, Bunting & Co., Oil Merchants,
No. 14, South Wharves. This is the oldest es

~"The State [North Carolina] is certain
for Bcarr by a majority of 5,000 to 8,000. This
is the opinion and conviction of some of her best
and most reliable whigs, and will be sustained."
—Cor. of N. Y. Tribune.
" Whistling to keep up oonstig9," Scottism
must be on its last legs, if North Carolina has
to be resorted to for " aid and comfort" Scott
has just about as ranch c twee of carrying North
Carolina, as Parana Brownlow says ho has of
Tennessee, which the militant Rev. says he can
not do unless he can " command tho powers of
Heaven."
But the whig loaders think it 11CGC1333,11 to keep
up confidence in their ranks, and the above is a
specimen of their efforts. They entirely ignore
the fact that many of the most influential and
leading-whips of North Carolina are openly op
posed to Scott, arid that its whiz presties are
chiefly going for Pierce and King, or have hoist
ed the flag of Webster and Graham. As for any
enthusiasm for Scott there, there isn't a bit of it,
nor is there likely to be.

PHIOUTZEIRD.—A Washington correspondent
says :—General Dawson of Georgia, Senator, has
been making a political tour through Maryland,
in behalf of General Scott, aided by Mr. Stan
ley of North Carolina, and several other mem
bers of Congress, a movement which betrays the
feebleness of General Scott's footing even In the
staunch old Whig State of Maryland. The effect
of the North Carolina election, which was contes
ted with unprecedented exertions on both sides,
has demanded this extraordinary missionary en
terprise in Maryland, as a State necessary to be
looked after, whereas the hard-headed old loco
fcoo State of Virginian is considered as a . field
upon which any extra expendikuro of powder
and shot would bo a dead waste of, ammunition.
• For tho Morning Post.
SCOTT AVILDFLUE.
On Tuesday last it was announced by very
largo hand-bills with flaming capitals, that there
would be a &oil meeting at the market house.
Now the. Democrats wore anxious for night -fall;
they were eager to see Scott-wildfire. Night
came, but the wildfire didnot come. About nine
o'clock the Candles were lit, end the meeting or
ganized. The Exit sPeaker that mounted the
bittcher's block was the distinguished individual
from this place, who represented in part, Alle
gheny, county, in tho Legielature, last winter.—
He was soon astride of the old worn-out spavin
ed hobby-hoTse that has been ridden nigh unto
death by the old orators of the party. I mean
the Tariff ; the River and Harbor Appropriation
came next; the military life of General Scott
closed this magnificent speech. I forgot to say,
during his speech ho stepped aside from his mas
tery argument to give the Post a heavy lick.—
Ile said he could find "no man too bad for the
Post." Can the Post survive - such an assault?
can It withstand the 'blows of saoh a giant ?
Time will tell. The next speaker (they called
him Eyester,) in - his speech covered the same
groand—Tariffißiverand Harbor, military fame.
Mr. Eyester made a furicius attack on the Demo
amtle platform, but said nothing about the Whig
platform. He insisted that the whig party with
Gen. Soott e at the heaA was for a Protective Tar
iff (the platform to the contrary). After making
a long, windy speech, With nothing in it but old,
stale, exploded notions, he thanked his audience
and jumped . off the block. The time has been
in Birmingham wherta Whig speaker would got
applause, bet it was not so at this meeting. N o
cheering, no clapping of hands, no manifestation
of joy of any kind greeted -the speakers. All
seemed pleased when the meeting was over.---
There were but few persons present At was a
slim alfair—l might almost say, a failure. The
only cheers that wore heard, came from the boys
who were loudly shouting for Pierce and King.
If the Whigs are pleased with this meeting, the
- Democrats are also. • • *
