. • • REVERE liersz, Bosnix,
Thursday h'vening, Aug. 19, 1852. I
Dear Phi hips:—l address yon to-night from
the "City of Notions," or as it is more classical
ly termed the "Athens of America." I left Al
bany yesterday-morning, 'at 10 o'clock, anti at 5
o'clock I found myself at the Boston depot;
making the journey in seven hours precisely, in
cluding stoopages—distance 200 miles. From
Albany to Springfield, Mess., there is but a sin
, glo track, and the cars make about 30 miles an
hour; from Springfield to Beaton there are two
tracks, and the running speed is usually at the
rate of 40 miles an hour. This is one of the
best conducted and most profitable Railroads in
the country. The Superintendent, L. A. GI/+v,
Esq., who lives at Springfield, is an intelligent
gentleman, and a thorough-going business man,
and from him I learned many interesting facts
respecting the history of the road and the coun
try through which it passes. The total coat of
the road was $15,000,000, some portions of the
work being very heavy. The track is 4 feet 8/i
inches in width. At the town of Washington,
62 miles east of Albany, there is a deep cut,
which is 1500 feet above the City of Boston, and
there is a gradual descent to the latter place.—
The entire road has been in running order since
1842, although the portion east of Springfield
has been in use.since 1839. '
From Albany to Boston I was a good deal dis
appointed in the appearance of the country.--
There is more untillableland than I had any idea
of. In many placea it is mountainous and rooky,
while in others it is quite marshy. Parts of
Western Massachusetts much resemble some of
our Western counties in Pennsylvania—having
rich valleys, and, gently rolling hills, suitable for
grazing. ,
There ;are some pretty villages on thetoute,
laid out in real Yankee style, painted white, with
_ green window-shutters, and surrounded with
plenty of beautiful shrubbery and shade trees.
• The ptineipal places on the road are Pittsfield,
Springfield and Worcester. There Is a large
government foundry and workshops at Siring
field, which constantly employ a vast number of
workmen. The station houses of the Western
Railroad are generally finely constructed build
ings, and make quite an imposing appeartume. .
• . In the cars were a vast number of ladies and
gentlemen, most of whom were returning hame
from the various " watering places," full of life
,- and merriment., - These "live Yankees" thor
• :4?ughly understand the true philosophy of living,
- and enjoy the world as they pass through it.
-, 'There is no difficulty in telling New Englandets
.-,by their peculiar dialect. They are scattered
over the world, and wherever they go, thrift, en
terprise and education soon follow.
Soon. after I arrived here I fell In company
'with our townsman Judge Wittlaus, who is vis
iting. the New England States, and stopping at
the Revere House fora few dope, and in a few
minutes wo agreed to devote this day to seeing
the sights of Boston and its environs. To carry
out this purpose, PAEAN STEVENS, Esq., th e gen .
. tlemanly proprietor of the. Revere House, and
his obliging clerk Mr. Ozo, W. Pramsox, engag
ed for us a comfortable conch and a right smart
'-Yankee driver named Enwitan Cirriert, who con
ducted us to nearly alt the places of distinction
in and around Boston.
We first drove to Bunker Rill Monument,
which ie about one mile distant from our hotel.
It is a plain column, two hundred and twenty
one feet` high, made entitely of pure Granite
Marble f rom ttte Quineyquarries,- and is ascend
ed by - two hundred and ninety- five ve circular steps.
•
Before ascending the visitor pays a fee'of 12/
Gents, which is - expended in keeping the grounds
ha order, and purehases a smell guide book for
in cents more, which p'oints oat to him all the
leading objects to be seen from the top of this
- viondedul mentuneut. At the entrance is a
• - small monument which is an exact model of the
<••• r < oritJ e rected. by Sing Solomon's Lodgein 1794,
in memory of Gen. Wear= and his associates
who fell in the battle on Bunker Bill.
From the top of Bunker Mil Monument is one
of the grandest views in the world. Th rou ii,
• the window on the east is seen the Navy Yard,
OR AZADAX4
the great Goirernment Rope Walk, whit* is 1800
feetitklength, ' and all the Docks, lisrds, ngine
Shops, &c., belonging to Uncle SM. Below is
seen the Mystic River, --beyond, on an Islana,
East Boston, Iltld furth erntimeroti a other beau
tiful islands in the Harbor, all pe ,. opled with busy
men. But it is said that the surges of the ocean
are constantly wearing away these fairy spots,
and they are one by'one disappearing from the
•viei. Through thiiiiiiadow on the south is seen
the proud eity.of - Bostan, the
Metropolis of New.
England. It Is a confused mass of buildings,
without anything like order being discoverable.
'The city is built upon a peninsula, about three
miles in length ind'one in breadth. Its surface
iikquite_unei , en, and there are three elevations
more prominent than the rest, from which origi
nates the name Tremont. The streets are a per
fect labyrinth, more mystical than that of Crete.
They out all sorts of angles but riyht angles, and
they aro totally without parallel in the art of sur
veying. A person may Start on a promenade,
and after walking for half an hour it is more
than likely that he will come out at the starting
point. It is said that the present streets of Bos
ton were originally mere cow-paths, and I am
inclined to think that there Is some truth in the
story. From the south.tvindow in the monument
may be seen a vast number of Bridges and Rail
roads, which run out from Boston in everydirec
tion, and 80020 very beautiful and superb Rail
road Depots. The towns of Quincy, Dorchester,
Roxbury, Brookline, Charleston and many other
places, aro also seen in the neighborhood. From
the west window of the monument may bo seen
- the State Prison, the cities of Cambridge, Brigh
ten, Harvard University, the Observatory, and
:other objects of attraction. From the North
window is seen Malden, Chelsea, Lynn, the cele
brated manufactory of shoes, the U. S. Naval
Hospital, Naltaht, &e. &o.
After spending an hour on the Monument,
which we shall never forget, we retraced our
stops down the dark and terrific; winding, stair
way, resumed our carriage, and drove to the
classical city of Cambridge, renowned for its
celebrated University, within whose walls the
most celebrated mon of New England, and we
may, say the United States, have been educated.
Old Harvard stands in the midst of a beautiful
grove of venerable trees, which has all: the ap
pearance of ohmic and sacred ground. The
principal building is made of white Granite mar
ble. it being vocation, no person was seen but
the janitor, who politely opened the door lead
ing to the gallery of paintings belonging to the
University. Here are seen the likenesses of
many of the former professors, distinguished
citizens of Boston and eminent public men.—
Amongst the paintings we noticed likenesses of
Gen, Washlngton,.John Marshall, John Adams,
John Quincy. Adams, John Winthrop, G. Spurr
helm, Thomas and Nicholas Boylston, Fisher
Ames, Samuel Dexter, and many others we do
not now remember.
Ili Cambridge 'are many places of historical
renown. The old College was occupied by the
American troops during the Revolutionary war.
The old Elm tree under which GM WASHINGTON
received his commission still stands. Its branches
spread overa space of 125 feet, and around it
is placed a circular iron fence to protect it from
harm. The residence of the British General
Howe, and WAsitusoiota's Bead Quarters are
still standing, the latter buildiog being now oc
cupied by Professor LoNorExtow, the poet. We
dittiot visit narrardObserratory, which is loca
ted a considerable distance from the College build
ings. In Cambridge we saw the residence of
Professor Wr.umn, who was found guilty end
executed for the murder of Dr. PAIMHAN.
We next drove to Auburn Cemetery, situated
some . 5 miles 'from Boston, but as we spent on
ly about an hour within its enclosures, it cannot
be expected that we shall attempt a description
of it In a short paragraph of a newspaper letter.
The grounds have neither thenatural beauty uor
the artificial improvementa and adornments to be
found in our Allegheny Cemetery. Sose persons
may question the correctness of this assertion,
but they ahould visit both as I have before form
ing on opinion. In Mt. Auburn there aro cer
tainly some beautiful monuments, te.steful epee- .
sures, and well laid out avenues; but many of
the walks and decorations aro becoming dilapi
dated for want of proper attention. A gentle
man of the genius and exquisite taste of our
friend Cinsurr Is much needed to protect, adorn
and beautify Mt. Auburn. I will venture the
prediction that in ten years from this time Alle
gheny Cemetery will be the most beautiful in
the United States and perhaps in the world, if
Mr. Cntsxtrr should live so long. ' In Mt. Au
burn are seen the tombs of. many of the former
distinguished citizens of Boston, whose names
are familiar to the world, such as Wuzanu ELLE.-
RV GUMMING, BENJ.. WATEILIIOI7BE, who 111 1800
introduced vaccinnation in the United States.
HADZIAIi ADAMS, Historian of the Jews, 111011aLto
Estateroi, Editor of the Atlas, &0.,
100 saw ono monument which is said to have
cost $14,000. In the midst. of Mt. Auburn is a
very pretty Gothic Chapel, built ofGranite, whieh
cost $25,000. Within the enclosure are 110
acres of land.
From Mt. Auburn wo were driven to the mag
nificent country residence and gardens of Join;
P. Cameo, Esq., a mile further on, which are
thrown open to strangers) visiting Boston.—
There are 180 acres in Mr. Ctannso's grounds,
and it is said that in the beauty, riehtiess . and
splendor of their adornments they aro unsur
passed in the world. It is impossible to • con
ceive of any thing more magnificent. Six ex
perienced gardeners are constantly employed in
improving and beautifying those gardens, which
occupy, 4 acres of ground. Every variety of
fruit trees, vines, shrubs and flowers, are here
•cultivated in a most perfect and curious manner.
We saw pear and peach trees trained along walls
like the palm leaf,_ and one pear tree was bear
ing 80 different varieties of fruit! We saw
grapes, already tie large as the damsel plumb,
the bunches of which will weigh 4/I lbs.
We saw two rose bushes 20 years old which ore
cultivated to spread over a apace Of 60 feet,.
Mr. CIIBIUNG went out to Calcutta when a boy of
10, and returned after having made a fortune, at
the age of 45. He throws open his gates and
enclosures, and cordially receives all visitors ;
and don't follow 'the course pursued by some
mean spirited people, and cause to he painted in
glaring letters at the entrance, " all persons are
cautioned not to walk on these grounds."
We were next driven to Brighton, the celebra
ted Cattle Market, passing by the IT. S. Arsenal
at Watertown, now under the charge of Bbijor
Hanutso, Winship's garden, and many other
places we have not time to allude to. It was
"high change," as the stockjobbers would Bay,
at Brighton, and there was an immense crowd of
people collected together, buying and selling all
kinds of cattle. We priced one fine pair of oxen,
and the owner made a desperate effort to sell
them to us at $lOB. Judge Wruarois passed
off pretty well for a regular cattle broker 1---
Thereis a large Cattle Pair Hotel or Exchange
at Brighton; where the seller and bnyer meet
after the sale, close the transaction, and " take
a drink."
Prom Brighton we were driven to Brookline,
Jamaica Plaine, &0., pnesing along as loi;ely a
country as the eye over beheld. The wealth!
men of Boston generally live: in this neighbor
hood, and they stern tolnve spared no.pains or

POLITICAL I TEM4.
A whig, by the name of Ranter, announces his
determination in a letter to the Cadiz, Ohio, Re
publican to vote for Scott. Well, cases of this
kind are rare, but the democracy may reasonably
look for a whig now and then to deolare
preference for Scott. •
Another whig, Dawson, of Georgia, has an
nounced his intention to vote for Scott.
Scott enthasiam, in Kentucky and Ohio, is much
like the fever and ague used to be in Illinoieand
lowa. "There's none of it just in this neck of
the woods, but way out yonder they're shaking
like all Eng.
Whilst whig editors are gassing alxint Scott's
exploits at Lundy's Lane, the rank and file of the
party are failing into the democratic ranks.—
This of course, is depressing to whig editors, but
very encouraging to the lovers of demOcracy..—
Well, let them come. We extend the right hand
of fellowship to all who have become tired of clap
trap and humbuggery.
Te ntn PoIHT.—The Concord (N. 11.) Patriot rt ,
marked the other day that it had noticed but two
volunteers in the illexican war who have made
insinuations against Gen. Pierce's courage. One
of those was returned upon th e rolls as a coloard
and the other flea deserter.

A participator in that struggle made this entry
upon his military journal--" May, 1777: The

The saint of whatever will revive and strengtheis
this sentiment cannot be over-estimated while every
proposition, every act, every idle word, calculated to

God forbid, that while at the North and at the

Geo. ticOtt is not a Catholic. To use his own
