"FUSS AND PEAITLERS.,,
This epithet is used in derision by all of our adverwatieft.
Whence mate Kt Its origin Is said to hate bcoaute a matter
'of grate inquiry among the leanteu politizal philologists. It
apptors to be more venerable, however, than they have sup-
The epithet, Finis and Fiatbera," was that applied to
Scott at Lundfs lame by the British. The tall been went
into the fight with a very large plume. and. was PO active
and earnest in imrryttig on and encouraging his men—Sint
at one point, then at another—that the enemy thought be
wan a little fluty.. Scott with his tall form. lard plume,
and dashing gallantly, was a oanspienous mark for the bul

was shot Mlle: skla,PliterVlSOLP in the shoulder. stud finally
had his featttna shot oft. The British and the LOPPAOXS
have canal taus Fuss and Feathers^ ever since.
This explanation of the origin of the term
" Fuss rind Feathers," hats been traveling
through the Whig papers for many months past,
but, at last, wo find it reported in some respect
able journals that are worthy of a notice, and
.explanation which they will all admit. The re
mark never came from the. British at Lundy's
Lane. It was first made by the reliable Whig
editor of the New York Mirror, and if there ie
anything wrong in it, let him or them explain it.
We would not assail Scott on either ofthese
points. 'Sometimes, Ire mut enjoy .a "tan," old
•at other times fetithers" . 42lc extremely eom-
fortable. If we had been at the Niagara Con
vention, we believe that the latter would be ex
-- Areinely agreeable to the women and children
who were kept out of the care by the editor of
the Gavide and his colleagues.
Now, where is the necessity for a party that
is dead and gone, to invent each a transparent
falsehood as the one we have quoted ? If it is
a slander on Oen. Scott it comes from themselves
and they had better ask the editor of the New
York Mirror as to its paternity.•
There is no use in the Whigs attempting to
blink this question. " Fuss and Feathers" is
the only "principle" they have in the campaign
except the fire that raised Scott's indignation
when he sat down in his parlor in New York to
write an address recommending the disfranchise
ment of every foreign citizen. Oar cotempora.
ries bad better fall back on their old policy;
preserve their integrity by giving the Irish and
all others who do not belong to us " particular
jersey" and come out, as they were wont to do,
in favor of banging the , foreigners.
The Indian Ilassaere.
The Port Smith of the 17, has some dela& of the
mammy by the Comanche .I.tatiana, of Captain Marcy and
his command of 80 men, derived from camases from Pert
Washita and Pert Arbuekku The expedition of Capt. Mer
cy was on the head waters of Bed River. The erunanthes
went into Capt. Ilarcy's camp and remised presents. At
night the tmacherotut savages got up a stampede among the
tenses and males, and about &plight attacked the camp.—

Port Smith, Capt. Strain, of -Fort Washita; and - -Mr. J. IL
Puydatn, of New Yoriy who earmapanied the exprdlea for
pleasure,---Cleceland Herald.
, • The above is from a 'true blue' whig paper,
and we marvel to find that it does not exclaim,“Lo!
the poor Indians." That used to be the expression
when Democratic adminletrations wore endeav
oring to protect the lives of our citizen° against
the murderous assaults of savages, but under
. whig-rule„ the tune is changed, and the ruthless
hordes massacre When, and where they please.
