05 BEING A GRANDFATHER.
I do not generally quarrel with Destiny.
I take the world -und my own individual
lot in it as I find it, and thank Heaven that
the former is so lovely, and that the latter
is so much bettor than -my deserts. But
there is one hiatus in my existence that I
cannot help deploring. Tregrel iTiial l was

and the patronage which age and grand* •
Guhership bestow, appears to me one of tho
crowning glories of ou r morial •jourse.—~
tn old man gazing= blandly pn the arrows
he has shot forth upon the world, and upon
those arrows’ arrows, is like the slow set
ting of an autumn sun, when it.looks forth
cooled and broadly upon aworldit has fruc
tified and is leaving. lie sitsirt'his.chnlr,
and. reads -his newspapers; and-Jiouncing
granddaughters call in upon him,tahdjump
upon his knee and kiss his old lips, and pat
his withered cheeks, and he strokes :their •
smooth tresses, and touches: the damask
bloom upon their faces, and smiles upon :
them, and is happy. Stick in hand, ho
sallies forth .to. call upon some of his off- ■■■■-...
shoots, and as he loiters along the streets,
the neighbors:hail him with a cheerful
good morrow, or a respectful bow, as duo •:
to a patriarch and an elder. Arrived at
his daughter’s dwelling, a swarm of little
urchins guther round him; Bohr seizes his : .
stick and rears it in a corner; Mary takes
his hat und: hangs. it on the-peg; Marian,
and -Tom, and little Harry, raiso a cry of
joyful welcome, nnd cluster round his knees.
while their mother unties his neckdrchieff
and assists in divesting him of his lop-cont.
He is led to the easy chair by the fire-side; :
every eye beams affection on him; his mi
nutest wants aro anticipated. He gives
small coins, nud : oranges, and sweetmeats ; -
to liis little pleasant admirers, and-rejoices .
in the idea that though ho depart, strength

ofhigh humanity shall still pour on. 'Theft „ .
at Christmas-tide, when all the. family
gathers together, and sons from London-and :
grandsons: from: abroad return for a few
days to his sung retirement; how happy
and. important is the old veteran 1 .-Tile
veriest nonsense he can say is listened to
as though it were the utterance of a pro
phet; They drink: his health—they gjiio :

pretending that he escapes their grasp—
he leads ail the family- under the misseltoe,
from his; old wife do wit to the smallest
grandchild, and even drags out the ajhcicnt
cook from her kitchen, and, amid :Bc.ftenttVi ■■■■■
of delight, kisses 7ier. ,Then;how heianglis :
at the magic lantern—-how slyly he lhrows
salt into the snap dragon, and turns every
one blue as a ten week's corpse—hriw’duV ’
will insist on hobbling through: Sir Kbger, i
everybody when he was. a boy; ay, and
can do it yet.
Pity the sorrows of a poor young man!
I am only a nephew, a cousin, a son, a
husband (you remember how I courted and
married Lucy B ); but neither am I a
grandfather* nor can.l .be-permitted to act
as a grandfather. I never see my young
cousins but 1 want them to cluster round
me, perch on my knee, and let me mix in
all their- antic games; but they will not let
me. The-eldest treats mo as his equal,
with abominable impudence; and my love
changes to visions of- an admonitory kick !
His sister ! ' why she blushes, when 1 shake
f her hand—Heaven only knows what she
would do if I were to kiss her 1 The lit
tle ones care less than they da for them
selves for me ; they think I shall spoil their
games if 1 meddle "with them. They won

cousin John ; and scorn me because I have
not got huge whiskers like their papa.—
I never see a pretty, aunt, with her, young
est inter arms, bat "I long to bend Over
her, and kiss her and bless her; but what
would she say to such a thing'? Slap my
faoe, perchance, and forbid me the house.
Thus, I have my love-thrust back upon me
—it is dammed up 'in my heart—grows
stagnant—l feel that l get daily move and
more misanthropic—whereas, if I.had only
been bom a grandfather, I know 'tliatl
should have been as benevolent and good
| a soul as there is on the earth-
Hide my, timel Yes, T know that if l
live long enough, if l am blessed with
young Ackerkmes, if they ate blessed in a
similar manner, that l shall have my do

the number of“ifs” In that short sentence.
Before oue is a grandfather, there, is' m

but you havnH to: keep otherpcople’s, and
at the same time you can havo all the ad

Before t canirecover the ground l have un

in the most unreasonable manner in my
