position beside the older institutions o' the kind, and
proves by its very great success that the mutual system

that we have this day subjected a Safe of each manu
facture, of similar size, which had beea ia use two
years, la ovens, to a firemade with.dry oak .wood, and
Pittsburgh stono coal, for tho space of five. and a half
hours, and, during lhai time, ®e Velieve the heal applied
wax far greater than any ordinary eonflagnuloiwhat,
at the expiration. of that lime, oit taking .the Safe from
the firei and cooling them down, we found that the iron
easting on both was in places entirely barm oiT, hut that 1
the hooka were; uninjured ;■ and, oil opening the Safes,-
we found books and papors. entirely uninjured, except'
slightly by the water nsed in.tooling off- Thia we found
to he the ease with both Safes; and the only perceptible
difference in the. appearance of the inter for was, thill
the vamisiLen the wood work of Barke A Barr.cs’Safe
was entirely uninj'ured, white .on that of Hall, Dodd A
Co.-i, It was blistered and blaekened. -In conclusion,
We would remark, that from the resalt of this teafi we
