city. Mr. SPEIroy yesterday entered suit, be
fore Aid. Lewis, ngainst Edward Simpson, Mary
Ann Woods, and fire others, charging them with
conspiring together to deprivehim (U’Elroy} of
the possession of a pieoe of landr which he held
by lease, and which lockedfivo years of expiring.
The defendants were held to hail in the snm of
$2OO each.
Another suit was brought against M’Elroy, by
the.parties in this suit, for forcible entry and
detainer; but Alderman Steel,, before whom it
was brought, discharged the case.
. Mutilated Batik Notes. —-Alderman Lewis gave
bis decision yosterday in the action brought by
a merchant of this city against tho Exohango
Bank-for the full value of a mutilated hank note.’
A- judgment was given for the plaintiff for font
dollars and costs. It will be,seen by this, that
the Bank has gained the principle for which they
contended—that is, of not redeeming a note at
its fail value, when it had been mutilated, for
the purpose of forming another note. . Judgment
was granted plaintiff for four-fifths of the note.
. Coroner V Inquest. —Coroner Arthurs was col
led upon yesterday morning, to hold nn inquest
on the body of a man named Samuel Myers,
who Was found dead in his bed, in the morning,
nt his residence on Von Braam -Btreet, in the
Eighth Ward. Tho jury returned a verdict of
death from causes unknown. He.loaves a wife
and one child.

John Kern, to hail, yesterday, for an assault and

was passed, requesting the President to comma.,

fishing vessels of the United States, to take fish
within three miles of the British Coast, in North
America; and asking- -what measures have been
taken to protect American rights.
, A resolution was passed, that the debate on
the River and Harbor bill, be closed to-morrow
at twelve: o’olook. . The House then went into
committee on this bill.
Mr. Marshall, of Ky., briefly arguod in favor
of tho constitutionality of such appropriations;
but the bill did not go far enough for him; it
did not protect in manner or substance the great
interests of the West. He addressed himself to
the point, until the expiration of the morning
hour, complaining that much the larger part of
the appropriation is for the Lake and Atlantic
coasts. ■■■:■
The committee took a recess at thrceo'clook,
until six in the evening. ■■■■■■,.
Senate.— Yesterday, the Senate, after taking
up the House resolution to adjourn on tho 10th
of Augußt, and amending by extending the time
to tho 31st, adjourned.
“To-day, the Senate took up a bill allowing ex
changes of nnrl granting additional school lands
in the several States which contain publio lands,
and for other purposes. Tho bill grants an ad
ditional section in each township to the Stateß
far school purposes.
Mr. Dennison called attention to this new pro
position to give away tho publio lands. He claim
ed for the o)d Btatos an equal share in tho pub
lio lands, and hoped that when those bills came
up giving the old States their portion of these
lands, that the representatives of tho now States
would not object.
The bill was ordered to bo engrossed.
On motion of Mr. Fetch, the Senate took ap o
bill granting land to Miohigon for tho construc
tion of a ship canal around tho falls of Sant St.
Marie. Mr. Fcloli offered a substitute tor the
bill,- omitting tho grant of public land and pro
vidinp in plaoo thereof, that the Secretory of
War contract with the lowest bidder for the con
struction of a ship canal, 100 feet wide and 12
feet doop. with single locks, 325 feet long nud
75 feet wide, tbo coot orsaid canaVnot to exceed
$lOO,OOO.
Mr. Cass pointed out the necessity of this
work to tho commercial and military interests
of the country..
Mr. Smith addressed the Senate nt length in

a riot occurred there between the Orangemen
and Catholics. Two companies of infantry wens
despatched to the ground, who quelled it by
firing shots among the rioters. . ;

Tien Bute, state prisoners in France, had a quar
rel in prison. Tho former stabbed tho latter
